An interesting review. You've convinced me to pick it up mainly with your comment that your where a bit underwhelmed with The Plane Below but found this much better, since I too was underwhelmed by The Plane Below so I seem to be on the same wave length as you here.

Interesting that Jubilex is no where in sight...such an iconic Demon. I wonder if they are holding him back for the cover slot (and star entry) in the next Monster Manual?

Would have been interesting to see you compare the content to that from the relatively recent 3.5 Fiendish Codex I which covered virtually all of the same topics, just not the 4e cosmology.

Pathfinder Maps, Pathfinder Accessories Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Charter Superscriber; Starfinder Charter Superscriber

I noticed that Josh Frost is credited for "Additional Design". Interesting,...

The Fiendish Codices were an order of magnitude better at describing demons, devils and the lower planes in general. Thank goodness they came out (and I got them) just before the 4E wave hit.

Better, how?

There are three changes that I'm sure you'll hate in the first layer of the Abyss alone:

1) The Blood Rift is now on the Plain of a Thousand Portals and provides a remarkably unsafe passage to the other layers (one demon lord that fell into the Rift as it first opened died).
2) The Wasting Tower of Khin-Oin is situated on the Plain of a Thousand Portals.
3) Khin-Oin is ruled by a demon lord called Phraxas.
