Where are you right now?

Rise of the Runelords

If you're running Runelords and you're reading this:

Where are you right now in the campaign? Go into detail!

Shadow Lodge

Our group just finished playing the first section of Hook Mountain. We blew through the Graul homestead in a single 9 hour session and it was a blast. The party loved (in a love/ hate sort of way) the redneck/ inbred Grauls. My wife complained that it was a bit too over the top.

Looking forward to Fort Rannick next Saturday.

Not much to say. We're on a break from the campaign but will kick off with the giant attack on Sandpoint when we get back to it. The PCs prevailed at Rannick and were made Peers of the Realm, granted title and land (the former holdings of a recently deceased noble by the name of Foxglove, a manor and several farmsteads south of Sandpoint). They're heading back, by way of Magnimar, to winter at their new place (actually they'll probably stay at their shared townhouse in Sandpoint). The giants make their first raids come spring.

Both Xanesha and Lucretia escaped their encounters, met up at the Kreeg clanhold, and headed back with a posse of ogres and weapons to Mokmurian. In the early stages of the game, Nualia also got away. She eventually hooked up with Mokmurian as well...and is partially behind what will be a slightly more furious attack on Sandpoint. She promised to the PCs that she would see the town burn for its treatment of her. She plans to see that oath through come spring...from the air...on the back of a certain red dragon.

The player characters in my game have just reached the dragon's lair overlooking Jorgenfist astride their brand new red dragon zombie. They've sorted through the valuables and are now pondering the valley below, trying to decide on their next course of action.

This is precisely where we are, without the zombie dragon (the orc paladin would frown on such tactics). They do have two captured dire bears from the raid on Sandpoint, but those won't be retrained in time for Jorgenfist.

They teleported to the Storval stair because it was the closest known landmark to the valley of the black tower. They fought the 4 giant encounter from the book, but we used MapTool with the illustration from the Runelords Player's Guide pg.12 as the "map". Using the illustration instead of a battle grid really enhanced the sense of altitude in the fight.

I am quite excited to continue! Funny that the three responders in the thread so far are all around the same point.

My group has just cleared the first Sandpoint encounter and is now investigating, where the goblins came from. And of course they are now Hemlok's "deputies" while he's off to Magnimar and are bringing peace and justice to Sandpoint. It took quite a while to introduce the characters to one another, but now, the game is rolling. Next two Saturdays are reserved for the campaign and i hope, they will advance quicker now.
I'm just wondering, how long it will take to venture through the whole campaing, as we only play once every three weeks...

At that rate, get ready for 2 years or so. :)

My party is currently in the Runeforge. 4 wings down, 3 to go. The campaign is awesome, we're having a barrel of fun. Skinsaw Murders was by large the best part, Sir Pett is an evil genius.

Just finished Hook Mountain Massacre now I'm preparing non-AP session between two books. HHM will continue little bit before giants are going to attack Sandpoint, there will be problems with famous bandit leader Bilger [foreshadowed NPC in my game]. We have had lots of fun but now I can do something really mean to players. *evil GM laugh*

We are one session away from the end of Burnt Offerings. The party is headed downstairs to Thistletop L2. We get in about 4 hrs every 3-4 weeks, and Christmas break ran until June due to a confluence of circumstance... Still trying to get back the momentum, but I am psyched for the next session. BBEGs here we come :)

Two of the other regulars in Paizochat are almost exactly in the same place I am. It's kind of funny sharing notes and giving each other tips.

I am running it on Google Wave, and they are currently fighting the goblin pyros. So lots more to do :)

My son's group, after having made friends with Mr. Vancaskerson and cleaned out the level, is about to enter the lower level of Thistletop.

PbP game is midway through the confrotation with the Skinsaw man. He just cut down the rogue (object of his affection) but has been backed into a corner by the barbarian, ranger and monk. But, a skulking goblin ghoul just suprise attacked the wiz/cleric attending to the unconscious rogue back at the cave-mouth, so the fun's not over yet!

Edit: actually, I should be writing the next post now instead of surfing these boards :>

I just DMd my group this past Sunday. In this session in Runeforge they cleared out the Vault of Greed, Shimmering Veils, and part of the Halls of Wrath. Next session should complete Runeforge and start the trek to Xin-Shalast. I think we have about 5 sessions left until the end. Right now the group is 3 players using 6 PCs (4 12th level, 2 11th level). Core 3.5 classes only.

This post should be in the obituaries thread...

My group of 6 5th levels was wiped out by Xanesha in the Clocktower.
Bad tactics + no retreat = TPK.

Tomorrow I'm using "Boggards in the Brinestump Marsh" adjusted with higher CR encounters as an introduction for the new PC's to meet Shalelu and then use her as a plot hook to start Hook Mountain Massacre.
This plus the trip to Turtleback Ferry should get them to the right level to take on the Fort.

Nidho,

I had an idea for what to happen if I get a TPK from Xanesha. You could have the PCs be rescued from death and then turned into wisdom-drained charm-zombies. Then, Xanesha takes her new minions from Magnimar (where her cover is blown) and she starts running a familiar gambling barge in the sleepy town of Turtleback Ferry...

Fast forward a year or so worth of the PCs having nightmare flashes of working on a gambling barge to a night when one of the other slaves finally snaps and lights himself and the stern of the barge on fire. The PCs (who are tattooed with the sihedron rune) are locked in a hold in the bow and see X come down below, snatch a chest and maybe a short speech about how their branded souls would enable her master's return and then she flees. The barge starts sinking and once the cold waters of the lake hit them, they regain their senses and can try to escape, likely returning to the sunken barge later to find that some of their gear is on display in the gambling hall.

Liberty's Edge

My group is in the character generation stage.

We are two or three sessions away from finishing Shackled City with me as a reformed Rogue-turned-Paladin.

My group is halfway through, and we're taking a bit of an extended summer break.

When we return, I'm having the FotSG raid take place on the eve of the year anniversary of the goblin raid from BO. HMM finished midwinter, so the group is taking some downtime through spring and summer.

- The groups sorcerer has returned to Magnimar to open a cake shop.

- The Assassin has taken a 'business trip' to Riddleport to avoid the mother of his (half-elf) child (Shayliss Vinder).

- The (female elf) Druid has a bit of a relationship going on with Shalelu, so has stayed in the Sandpoint area.

- The Spherewalker of Desna is traveling Varisia and beyond, with the Knight in tow.

I'm going to have them all return to Sandpoint for the Swallowtail Festival, so they're all in the same place ready for the giant raid.

great plot hook

Your idea is great, I like it.

The truth is that the fight with Xanesha did'nt end "technically" in a TPK, only the fighter was really dead at -32 or so from a crit of the Impaler of Thorns.

The others were just disabled;
The half-orc druid was in the negatives but stable and under the effect of a lesser vigor spell.
The dwarven cleric was catatonic from having it's wisdom drained to 0.
then the half-elf ranger, the human barbarian and elemental sorcerer all succumbed to X's deep slumber spell.

Then i said the scene faded to black and I called for a group talk.

My gaming group is, save for one exception, a bunch of new gamers, this campaign is their first contact with PF and roleplaying in general.
Their characters were good and with sound backstories and many of the players were very fond of them but they're all still new to the system and eager to try new classes and such.
So if they saw the situation as an opportunity to try something new, I can't blame them.

After the talk all the players decided to start from scratch with new characters and they were happy about it, so that's what we'll do.

If you like the idea, you could have the new PCs be on the barge and run into their charm-zombie former selves. Coincidentally (or as a result of a confrontation by the new group), Xanesha sinks the barge and flees to participate on the ogre attack at Ft. Rannick. Then, the new PCs could rescue the old PCs from the sinking barge and you would have Xanesha as a returning villain that would span both sets of characters and would replace Leucretia at Ft. Rannick.

The old PCs would then provide some continuity in terms of sharing information about the back story and would return to Sandpoint to be used as a hook to get the new group back to Sandpoint for the beginning of FotSG. The new-to-RPG players could feel happy that their original characters are (with one exception) still milling around the campaign world somewhere and could potentially act as replacements in the case of another death or a last-minute rescue party in the case of another, future TPK.

I know I would get a kick out of seeing an old character as an NPC.

I'm not surprised she stomped 6 5th level characters, she's nasty even if you are 6th or 7th level. I wound up giving the party 2 NPC helpers and dropped a cache of items for them including some nice boosting items and they still lost a player and very nearly lost a second and that might have swung the battle.

Piling on to the "Almost everyone is in Fortress of the Stone Giants" theme that seems to be going on:

My group just finished sneaking their way in through the redcap caves. After getting knocked around by a very angry kobold barbarian (one of the more fun fights I've had in a long time), they liberated the dwarven slaves in the forge. They subsequently set the freed dwarves on the ogres in the tannery to take out some frustration while the group moved to where the dwarves said the giants stage their prisoners. Of course, on their way they discovered the shrine to Lamashtu and its preistesses. To make matters worse, the dwarven cleric stumbled into the next cave before the encounter fully came alive, waking the two dragons. Should be another fun fight...

We stopped for a month until after Gen Con, but the group that I am running for made it to the gates of Xin-Shalast right at the end of the last session. (Seemed like a nice cliffhanger place to stop)

Our group made it to the end of Fortress of the Stone Giants but were wiped out in the battle with Mokmurian. Only one of the group wasn't killed and he is currently gracing Mokmurian's chamber as a favored piece of stone artwork. The player's are making new characters.

Yes, she was way over their league and I knew it.

Not all enemies are to be fought, though, that is a lesson I wanted this group to learn.
The only one that thought of retreat was the veteran player with the sorcerer, but seeing where the encounter was going decided to stay and fall by his comrades.

They certainly would enjoy the opportunity to get (OOC) revenge on Xanesha, I'll make sure that they stand a chance this time. ;)

The thought of the former PCs going back to Sandpoint after their ordeal is sound too, two of them have strong ties with some of the NPCs there.

Many thanks! I appreciate your help!

Having just finished up Fortress, my party is back in Sandpoint and pondering what to do about the "demon in the basement".

The party wizard, armed with Mokmurian's spellbooks and drifting towards evil, is intending to research in the Library which I hope to use as a hook to get them on the way to the Runeforge. The rest of the group is pretty much going to pursue some romance and personal projects, as I try to reconnect them with the Sandpoint setting before flinging them off to the Runeforge.

It's actually kind of nice to be finally in the 5th book, as we're just ending our 2nd year on the AP.

We just faced Xanesha and will be starting HMM in our next session. Our DM likes pretty super-powered characters and even with higher stats and better items than you would normally find in a 6th level party, we were beaten badly by Xanesha but managed to scrape by and win.

We have five PCs and both tanks were down. The other two would pretty much need 20s to scratch her, and I (the wizard) was having a hard time beating her SR. I was already in the process of fleeing (thanks to fly) when an ally landed a hay-maker crit and my own magic missle dealt the killing blow. We were *this* close to a TPK (well, except me, of course, since I was well on my way out of Dodge).

Grand Lodge

Spoiler:

We are smack dab in the middle of Foxglove Manor. My PCs have just encountered the Misogynistic Haunt and the Barbarian proceeded to attack the monk (the only female in the group.) The rest of the party leapt to her defense only to get pounded by the Barbarian. That was the longest 4 rounds of their life...

So far only the Barbarian has failed any of the saves involving the Haunts... though, there are more to come! They just heard Iesha upstairs in the Attic, which is pulling them further away from their goal...

My group is exactly at the half-way point. We're getting ready to start FOTSG. We've lost a couple players, we've gained a couple, but overall, my group's stayed pretty constant without a lot of turnover. We started in mid-December.

So, in 7 months, I've managed to get through 3 AP books. In that same time, I've gotten 7 new ones. The mountain grows faster than I can climb it! Only solution: play more PF games!!

Just created characters last week! Two Varisian cousins, one raised in Magnimar, the other in a small farming village near the city; as girls, they were best friends and swore they'd go seek their fortunes together one day. The city girl has become a cleric of Nethys, her cousin a fire sorceress; they are traveling to Sandpoint to ask Father Zantus to dedicate a small corner of the cathedral to the god of magic. They have not yet met a quiet young Shoanti man, a rogue who has come to Sandpoint as a hired guard for a south-traveling caravan – guards against the goblin problem being a routine precaution for any merchant traveling the Lost Coast road. The cousins have taken rooms – and a temporary job waiting tables – with Ameiko.

The Varisian clan of the sorceress lived near some odd artifacts whose nature I have not yet detailed, but in addition to her sorcerous blood, we have an excuse for her knowledge of Ancient Thassilonian, a language she's not even aware she knows.

Since I have only three players, their characters have been created at second level, and we are using a rule similar to the Gestalt Character option in the 3.5 Unearthed Arcana: every third level, a character gains a level in two different classes; the extra level will alternate among the three, beginning at third level.

We've run things right up to the night before the opening of the Swallowtail Festival. I hope to be "liveblogging" the campaign as we go.

Catacombs of Wrath. One of my players decided he had an early bedtime and I had to cut the Erylium fight short. (Colour spray, bind her, bag her, sack after slogging it out with her summoned mooks.)

Hopefully the PCs interrogate her or I get to have her escape so I can play her up more. :)

Between Hook Mountain Massacre and Fortress of the Stone Giants, as we've been for close to four months. Summer break for the campaign.

However, in a couple of weeks, I'll be running a session focusing on the PCs' rule of Fort Rannick, at the end of which they'll receive a missive from Sandpoint. I figure I'll run another session focusing on the journey and their reception as Big Damn Heroes in Sandpoint before well and truly kicking off the fourth module.

They made it! We've finished Skinsaw Murders.

After the TPK a new group of adventurers appeared in the region.

The new PCs were travelers passing by Sandpoint and got involved in a mission to defend the village from goblin raiders, the Licktoads, that were being pushed out of the Brinestump Marshes by Old Megus(Boggards in the Brinestump).
They found Shalelu, wounded and poisoned by the grigs and offered to continue her mission. Entered the marshes and "diplomaced" the goblins led by Gugmus. Found the boggards and the witch (oracle really) and defeated them making friends with Pimpleweed(grig)too.
One of the players asked the lil bugger about fey-crafted weapons (he had seen sleep arrows in action and wanted some)and got an evasive response like: the woods will provide to those in need when the time is right.

Now in good terms with the people in Sandpoint, they inevitably get wind of another group of adventurers that were investigating certain series of murders. The clues lead them to Magnimar where many of the new PCs get the opportunity to develop their backstories, gather clues and make alliances with some of the influent people in the city.

These clues set the group in the track of their former selves and finally they reach the clocktower, only to find a bizarre show there.

Greycloak of Bowness:
In the end I felt a little lazy and decided to leave the old characters(and their equipment) out of the game permanently: They had access to spells and items, MIC & MSC, that I wanted to remove from the game.

All but one, the already dead dwarven fighter, of the bodies of the old group had been put through the sihedron ritual. Their naked, mangled bodies stood there in a big sihedron symbol crudely drawn in the floor with their own splattered blood. Hopefully this would give a hint to the new characters that failure was not an option and that any mistake would get them into really uncomfortable situations and dire consequences.

The non mutilated fighter gave the new group some new clues via speak with the dead. This plus some good rolls gathering information in the city allowed them to unveil the real mastermind behind the murders.

It went this way: There was a mask dance scheduled for the next oathday I one of the luxurious villas in the high part of the city.
The most influent people of the city were invited, so was the mayor, who thwy knew Xanesha was trying to charm and eventually murder.
They got an invitation through one of their influent friends and then proceeded to forge some more...

In short; they succesfully infiltrated the party and this lead to lots of hilarious social interacion, incidentally they spotted Grobaras, or who they thought it was Grobaras because all fat men look alike behind a mask. Sorted out a couple of decoys and finally interupted Xanesha approaching the man and charming him.

The combat was exciting both for me and the players...
X did'nt have the Impaler of Thorns nor did many of the players access to their armor or weapons. X was limited to spellcasting and WIS draining so it become a magic duel.
The players surprised her with awesome stunts and high rolls with dispel magic. Used no SR spells and never allowed her to get the higher hand. Keeping her on her toes the rogue sneak attacked and the paladin shone smiting her and when she tried to flee he decapitated her with a lucky shot with the barbarian's chakram.

Now the new PCs have become the heroes of Magnimar for saving the mayor from certain sihedroning, they got their reward and will live happily ever after...

...for a week or two because Hook Mountain Massacre awaits.

My group just finished dealing with Foxglove Manor...

Having went back to Sandpoint to inform the Sherriff as to what had transpired there, they just arrived at the Magnimar City Gates (I had the PC's originally come from Magnimar to addend the Swallowtail Festival in Sandpoint, so this is a "coming home" of sorts for them)...

Tonight the group I am running for will be heading up to the Pinnacle of Avarice for the first time. Anxious to see how those battles will go!

Liberty's Edge

My group is just getting ready to start. I'm running them through the Late Unpleasantness first, as most of them are from Sandpoint. They are all working for the sheriff, whom at least two of them suspect is actually Chopper. Since Belor is supposed to be the real hero of the Late Unpleasantness, I'm letting one of my players play him for now. I think we're on victim #19 or so, but I'm hoping to actually start the Swallowtail Festival next week.

Sovereign Court

The pbp I am playing in, we have just taken down Nualia and are deciding whether to take her back to Sandpoint or coup de grace.

I the latest RotRL I am GMing, they are searching the glassworks. THey have just heard the sound of smashing glass through a door...

Dark Archive

My group has breezed through the glassworks (time restraints didn't let them explore thoroughly), chased a few goblin commandos down to Tsuto where they won a pretty close fight. As of the end of the session, they had just knocked Tsuto unconscious via a sap from the 9 strength bard and an unarmed critical from the sorcerer before he could bail out.

Next stop: Catacombs, and some opportunity to play up Tsuto for the future.

My group is in Thistletop. They pushed their luck by heading into the second dungeon level without rest or preparation and got wrecked in the chapel area. Next session should be interesting as they regroup and the bad guys have a chance to organize.

We're two sessions into the campaign and my players just defeated the quasit in the Catacombs of Wrath. They made a B-line towards the chapel. They didn't know what was coming, but when mapping the area, got really curious about the shrine and then the chapel doors. They burst into the room, and combat begins.

They were still first level. We've converted the stats to Pathfinder instead of 3.5. They weren't able to hit the quasit, much less damage it having no weapons that go through DR. The paladin's smite won the day eventually, since it goes through DR. It was a long fight, and they had fun. Good stuff.

We are in Magnimar right now. The group (which varies from three to six members, depending on the night) is around fifth level and just defeated Ironbriar. However, they had to retreat from sawmill (if you call making a mad dash for the river and doing a cliff dive off the top of the mill a retreat...) before they took him out. So, the day after the trip to the sawmill, the wizard heads to the Arvensoar to report the cult activity. At which point, the guard arrest *him* because Ironbriar had given them his name and description as a person of interest in a murder case at the sawmill. The other two PCs (a ranger and a sorcerer) infiltrate the sawmill (which had been depopulated by the group the night before) and confront Ironbriar (who was feeling pretty confident in his ability to defeat the group). One Will save and critical hit later, and the elf was singing another tune altogether. However, the remaining two now have to figure out how to get the wizard out of jail. Could be an interesting side quest....

HMM

- my players took Fort Rannick, one of them (halforc cleric of Gorum ;) )was declared “Lord of Rannick” by Magnimar
- Lucrecia disguised herself and charmed the new Lord
- A rival group of adventurers (the pregenerated characters ;) ) rescue many citizens of Turtleback Ferry during the flood and start advertising for Korvosa
- My players discover Lucrecia, she flees to the ogre-clan in the mountains
- My players fix the dam and try to secure Magnimars influence in the region
- Their rivals trick them and Turtleback Ferry listens via scrying to their debate (“What about a sneaky assassination?” “As a last result we can always blow up the dam muhahah”, etc.)
- The people of turtleback ferry are shocked and will break off their connections to Magimar, Korvosa will be their new protector state
- my players still hold Fort Rannick but teleport frustrated to Magnimar

now i am working on the HMM-finale

Heh. The big thing for my group is whether or not they manage to bypass a number of encounters. If they don't bypass any...it could be up to 3 sessions. If they play their cards right, I'm pretty sure they can manage to hit him this Saturday.
