I know how poisons work I am just wondering on how the cost is based, is it per dose? If so then that seems like it is terribly expensive, for example Black adder venom is an injury poison with a fort save of 11 with a frequency of 1/rd. for 6 rds. And dealing 1d2 Con with only 1 save. If there is only one dose and it cost 120 gp it is not worth it especially at a Dc 11. By throwing 2 poisoned items you could have almost master worked an item..... Please some one help with this confusion.

I am not sure about the RAW on this but I always interpreted the RAI as meaning that ammunition can be coated in poison in the stacks they are available for purchase in. Ie. 10 darts, 20 arrows, 5 repeating bolts etc.

This helps lighten the price a little bit and just plain out makes sense as you are only applying as much poison to a surface as to cover the area that will cut or penetrate the enemy.

Yes, poisons are expensive. And I believe the listed price is intended as a single dose. A Tanglefoot bag cost 50 GP and can be used once. AntiToxin is also used once and cost the same. Poisons cost more, but the people making it can die if they screw it up. And many regions may make them black market items... that is the reason they are not on the normal equipment list. Plus many of the monsters that have the really tough poisons are very deadly. All of these things lead to them costing much more then normal equipment.

With all of that being said I believe setting the costs to 3 doses would not be too bad. And some DM's may allow members of a Faction to get poison in even larger quantities. Perhaps if you are a member in good standing of a thieves guild or something you can get 10 doses for the price of one.

But per RAW and I believe RAI one dose costs the listed price.
