Shimye-Magalla as a PCs deity, what Domains should she have?

Having recently read "Heart of the Jungle" and "Sargava; the Lost Colony" I like the short write-ups about the faith of Shimye-Magalla among the Mwangi. I was wondering, as both a player and a GM what Domains do you think she would grant access to?

Two that I see as no-brainers are Travel and Water. I'm thinking that Shimye-Magalla (like one of her component parts) would be True Neutral and likely no alignment Domains.

And would she have access to Domains that neither Desna nor Gozreh offer?

And last, is there any official word (or opinion) on this?

I'm mostly just curious about what other people think, and if anyone has worked out anything along these lines.

Thanks in advance.

bump!

Anyone? (Should I have placed this in the "Heart of the Jungle" product thread, or the "Sargava; the Lost Colony" thread?)

There is a PC in my campaign following Shimye-Magalla, but he's not a cleric so domains haven't come up specifically. (Don't feel bad, I posted a Shimye-Magalla thread a ways back and it was ignored too.)

I don't have Heart of the Jungle yet but have the Sargava book, and from their clarification on her nature there, I'd say Liberation, Travel, Water, Luck, and Weather.

I have taken some inspiration for Shimye-Magalla from Mami Wata which gives her a little more Nature, even Animal, and Luck slant.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

As a strange sort of combination of Desna and Gozreh, Shimye-Magalla is not actually one entity. It is, in fact, Desna and Gozreh. Worshipers of Shimye-Magalla can thus choose from the domains granted by Desna OR those granted by Gozreh.

However, if that messes with the admittedly pleasing to the OCD minded setup of every deity offering 5 domains, I would say that Shimye-Magalla would grant the following since they represent the strongest crossover between the two deities:

Air, Water, Luck, Travel, Weather

Cool. I don't have a "balance" problem with just letting someone pick from any of the domains, but I am also comfortable with the concept of local deity variants and aspects and cults that have different domains from the norm. Deities clearly aren't themselves limited to certain specific domains, so I figure the spellcasting domains are just the way in which they are making themselves known through their worshippers, which may vary according to a variety of factors.

I personally prefer Liberation over Air on a short-list because of the slavery problem in the Mwangi; seems like it would be a "hot topic." Maybe older cults tend towards Air but the new kids tend towards Liberation.

James,

Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer this. I like the (5) Domains you recommended (heh heh mostly because Travel and Water made your "cut") However, having said that, I do like the idea that worshipers of Shimye-Magalla can choose from either Desna's or Gozreh's Domains.

Liberation's certainly more of a topical choice for the Mwangi, but I chose Air over it because Gozreh is associated with storms and Desna is associated with the stars and night sky.

Oh, sure.

Hey on a related note, I haven't seen any S-M iconography. I wondered if both her faces were female or whether it was a one male, one female kind of deal. I personally was doing two female faces, one with lighter skin and one with darker, but a lot of RL traditional African janiform depictions are male(dark)/female(light).

I know that this is a really old thread, so I may post this elsewhere...but being keen on representation in my character concepts, when I joined my group's Skull & Shackles campaign halfway into the second book, I created a neutral good merfolk Druid from the Mwangi coasts with the Nature Priest archetype from the Healer's Handbook, choosing Shimye-Magalla as his deity and invoking Gozreh's aspect in the janiform amalgam for the Aquatic domain. I'm having an absolute blast with the PC, as it's been a long time since I played a full progression spellcaster and this pirate crew didn't have one. At 8th level, I've been able to secure the Variant Channeling feat to obtain the normal channeling positive energy powers in addition to the Command Aquatic Creatures channel power the Aquatic domain bestows, so his skills and abilities, especially underwater, are really versatile. :)
