Getting rid of my D&D 3.x and Star Wars Saga Stuff

3.5/d20/OGL

With the Pathfinder RPG now complete with the Core and Bestiary (GameMastery Guide's a nice, though optional, book) and the numerous Paizo and 3PP products, I debating of divesting myself of my WotC D&D 3.5 books (e.g. the three Core books, the numerous monster manuals, Complete series, etc.) And I haven't played Star Wars Saga for years now. Right now, the only reasons I'm keeping them are:

1) 3.x is backwards compatible with Pathfinder.

2) There are no pdfs for 3.x and Star Wars Saga.

Thoughts?

I think you can ditch the three 3.5 core books without any loss, but I would think twice about the others - for example, you can never have too many monster books.

I would keep the 3.5 PHB and DMG books for nostalgia. I have a PHB and DMG from every version of D&D. I kept the old ones by accident over the years but now am glad I did just to have on the shelf.

You also might want to keep any monster book that has WoTC proprietary monster stats in it (mind flayers, demon lords, etc) since you will never have a pathfinder version of these. Everything else can go.

If you get rid of them, you'll be sorry a couple of years down the road when you suddenly find the urge to play 3.5 or Saga again :)

I would hang on to them.

1)If later want them again, you'll have to try to track down copies on the second hand market and probably pay more for them at that time.

2)It is nice to have them as reference books in case you get into a discussion.

3)As was pointed above, a lot of the content is not open, so you may want the books to use that later. ("I'm in the mood to have a mindflayer group as the BBEGs, now where did I put that 3.5 MM? Oh crap, I got rid of it, damn it!")

Because the PF editors had so much stuff to pack into the Core Rules book, it's possible a table here or there got cut to which you might want to refer.

It's also handy to hand a PHB or DMG to a new Player joining your group when they're trying to build their first PC, equip them, learn basic spells and so forth. Enough is the same that it will work for general reference until they decide to spring for a PF-CR of their own (at $50, still somewhat expensive for a newb).

My GF gets all my hand-me-down books. She used my 3.0 PH when I had the 3.5, and then got the 3.5 now that I have the PF book.

It's always good to have a spare PH and DMG at the table.

Plus, they're lighter to pass around than the PF-CR.

A lot of the Fluff books are still fully functional. If anything, the main Monster Manual might be redundant, but other than that everything else should still be functional.

I'd suggest you not be in any rush to get rid of it.

FWIW,

Rez

+1 on the "Keep!" advice for both 3.x and Saga Star Wars.

This, despite the fact that if you have KotOR and/or SotG then you probably could sell them for a pretty penny. There have been some crazy prices on-line.

I was lucky enough to find a SotG at a FLGS, so I'm not letting that through my hands for any reason. (Though I'm still missing the KotOR book. I still can't believe that it went completely out of print less than a year after it was published.)

I agree with this. Keep them all. You never know when you will want / need them again.

Just drop them off at my house.
I'll 'keep' them for you. :D

I would say keep at least the core books 3.5 PHB, DMG & MM and Star Wars Saga core book. That way if in the future you are invited to join a game of those and you want to play you have the basics.

I have actually done the opposite - decided not to pursue PF and stick with 3.5 but I have still kept my Pathfinder core rulebook just on the off-chance a game offer comes up in the future that really makes me want to play (most likely it will be the setting or campaign concept that would draw me in, rather than the system).

You can probably safely get rid of your other books if you never plan to GM those games again. I know one of my mates who has moved to Pathfinder sold his complete Complete series to me :)

Good points, everyone. Thanks! I'll most likely keep my D&D stuff and sell off/trade the SW Saga books. (The latter has a lot to do with my preference for the D6 system which, I feel, did SW right.)

INterestingly I preferred Star Wars D20 Revised Core Rules to d6. However nowadays my choice for running Star Wars would be FATE in the shape of Starblazer Adventures :)

joela- do you plan to be at Gen Con? If so, what sort of price/ trade would you be looking for to unload those SW Saga books?

I heart FATE (at least through SotC). Have you tried it?

Hi, ronin. Unfortunately, I will not be attending GenCon this year.

For the Saga stuff you could just rely on Gry's conversion to D6 guides from The Rancor Pit

The Saga stuff is just fluff reference at that point. Best of both worlds, at least in my case, since I prefer the D6 system as well.

Personally I dumped my 3.x stuff with the exception of the Psionics stuff and the Draconomican. If I ever need to make a dedicated 3.x character I'll just use the online SRD stuff.

Joela, you might want to wait until the Autumn to sell your stuff.

Oh, and check out typical prices- Knights of the Old Republic and Starships of the Galaxy are pretty pricy on ebay.

(I'm just trying to help you get the most for your buck when you do sell them. Good luck!)

Appreciate it. Yeah, been reading/seeing that the KotOR and SotG are pretty rare. However, some folks are charging like $80+. Yow!
