Once everyone's ready, Keliwyn opens the door and strolls into the next room with the air of someone who belongs.

Survivor's Salvation

Fina closes the door of the cabinet room, draws her sword and signals that she's ready before Keliwyn opens the door.

The door opens to reveal a room with numerous skulls are set evenly within the room’s stone walls. Candles inside them cause them to glow like morbid jack-olanterns and cast dim light across the room. Emerion's sunrod is a beacon in this gloom. The walls here are plastered and decorated in the same manner as the first room.

Three unmasked Queen’s Physicians play cards at a table against the south wall. One has even removed his long leather coat. Two men and two women in green robes and breastplate sit at the other table eating. Four animated skeletons wait upon their needs. One skeleton holds a platter bearing several goblets and a decanter of rich dark wine.

Numerous black-sheeted cots ring the room, their satin coverings and overstuffed pillows seeming more akin to funerary trappings than the resting places of the living.

"What are you doing here?"

Istas hovers just outside the door, knowing her robes will identify her as anything but a Queen's Physician to these cultists. Instead, she keeps back enough so her friends obscure her presence, but still close enough so she can view into the room and react to Emerion's ruse.

I also need to know the size of the room. Need to determine if a channeling of positive energy can reach the skeletons with a 30-foot range.

Survivor's Salvation

The room is 30 feet square. Your door is in the middle of the west wall. There are two 5x5 door alcoves in the south wall with the card table between them. The Urgathoan's table is slightly north of the middle of the room. Map to follow, but don't hold your breath.

Female Human (Shoanti) Cleric 6

Istas delays her action so Emerion and the others can enter the room and get in place. As soon as she discerns the skeletons moving forward to threaten anyone, she'll channel positive energy.

Keliwyn may be my longest running character period, and certainly is my favorite since I played in middle school some 25 years ago. I like him so much, I also played him in Tarren Dei/Trevor Gulliver's River of Darkness game. Speaking of which, if we can't get Wicht back, (or even if we can) we should recruit him for this game!

Saving Throw Reflex negates; see text; Spell Resistance no

Web creates a many-layered mass of strong, sticky strands. These strands trap those caught in them. The strands are similar to spiderwebs but far larger and tougher. These masses must be anchored to two or more solid and diametrically opposed points or else the web collapses upon itself and disappears. Creatures caught within a web become grappled by the sticky fibers. Attacking a creature in a web doesn't cause you to become grappled.

Anyone in the effect's area when the spell is cast must make a Reflex save. If this save succeeds, the creature is inside the web but is otherwise unaffected. If the save fails, the creature gains the grappled condition, but can break free by making a combat maneuver check or Escape Artist check as a standard action against the DC of this spell. The entire area of the web is considered difficult terrain. Anyone moving through the webs must make a combat maneuver check or Escape Artist check as part of their move action, with a DC equal to the spell's DC. Creatures that fail lose their movement and become grappled in the first square of webbing that they enter.

If you have at least 5 feet of web between you and an opponent, it provides cover. If you have at least 20 feet of web between you, it provides total cover.

The strands of a web spell are flammable. A flaming weapon can slash them away as easily as a hand brushes away cobwebs. Any fire can set the webs alight and burn away one 5-foot square in 1 round. All creatures within flaming webs take 2d4 points of fire damage from the flames.

Web can be made permanent with a permanency spell. A permanent web that is damaged (but not destroyed) regrows in 10 minutes.

Female Human (Shoanti) Cleric 6

Istas rounds the corner and moves into the room as soon as Heather's spell takes effect. Realizing most of the cultists and skeletons are penned in by the web, she foregoes channeling positive energy just yet. Instead, she hurls her grandfather's spear at the remaining cultist, then moves forward to challenge the skeletons who are free of the web, drawing her club along the way.

Go ahead and put me at initiative 15, just behind Heather...

When the web goes off, Emerion throws off his disguise and readies his blade to engage the free priest. I'm assuming that's his action gone trying to bluff them.

Survivor's Salvation

Unfortunately that's a good assumption, dabbler.

Istas' spear flies true and takes the breastplate clad foe in the thigh.

She rips the spear out and moves forward to engage Emerion. As she closes Emerion's light shines full on her breastplate showing in stark relief the black fly emblazoned there. Her scythe swishes back and drives forward in a swing intended to cut him down at the knees.

I'm confused. Did Heather's web take effect during the surprise round? Did she change her action instead to go for magic missile in round one? How'd we suddenly get so many opponents on us? I thought most them got pinned down by the web effect...which is why I had Istas throw her spear and move forward to occupy the remaining physician and three skeletons.

Survivor's Salvation

Heather's web missed 3 skeletons. (2 out of AoE, 1 saved) One Urgathoan made his save. The Physicians were on the south side of the room and out of the web AoE. On the plus side the web is holding down three Urgathoans and a skeleton.

Scratch that. The web is 20' radius. Those two skeletons will need to save. 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

Also, I blew the timing. You guys had surprise and I jumped the gun on your opponent's attacks. Let me rework things slightly.

Surprise round

Emerion bluffs. Heather casts web. Istas delays, then spears the unwebbed Urgathoan. Fina steps up to defend Heather or beat on foes. Keliwyn moves into room toward physicians.

Ignore the described attacks by your foes. And any AoOs I offered you. Instead EMerion, Heather and Istas can take their first round actions. The magic missile and attack on the scythe wielder are rescinded. Melee with any of the webbed individuals will require movement into the web.

A grease spell covers a solid surface with a layer of slippery grease. Any creature in the area when the spell is cast must make a successful Reflex save or fall. A creature can walk within or through the area of grease at half normal speed with a DC 10 Acrobatics check. Failure means it can't move that round (and must then make a Reflex save or fall), while failure by 5 or more means it falls (see the Acrobatics skill for details). Creatures that do not move on their turn do not need to make this check and are not considered flat-footed.

The spell can also be used to create a greasy coating on an item. Material objects not in use are always affected by this spell, while an object wielded or employed by a creature requires its bearer to make a Reflex saving throw to avoid the effect. If the initial saving throw fails, the creature immediately drops the item. A saving throw must be made in each round that the creature attempts to pick up or use the greased item. A creature wearing greased armor or clothing gains a +10 circumstance bonus on Escape Artist checks and combat maneuver checks made to escape a grapple, and to their CMD to avoid being grappled.

Before he was kidnapped, beaten, drugged, and infected with bloodveil and left for dead, Keliwyn might have spared the man's life.

Survivor's Salvation

"I .. we .. Daval..." The begging Physician dies on Keliwyn's rapier.

Fina asks, "Kill them and let Pharasma sort them out?"

Emerion lurks on the web's edge looking for an opportunity to attack.

Heather's ray burns an avenue through the web and immolates its target. The Urgathoan screams and drops her scythe and the skull. Then she falls moaning to the floor. Her cries continue a few seconds as the web burns around her. Then she stills amidst the char.

The line of burning web widens and spreads outward, covering the ceiling above the blaze in a dark, foul smoke. The two trapped Urgathoans watch the approach of fiery doom and struggle to free themselves. The woman across the table shouts foul, but empty, curses at the party.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4,1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

Driven by rage. The woman somehow wrenches free and swings her scythe before her as she wades through the web toward the party.

Wellard, web now says fire burns a 5x5 foot square per round. Heather has ignited a major diameter of the web circle. It will take 4 rounds to completely consume the webs to the edges of the perpendicular diameter. The flames will hit the man on the near side of the table first, next round, and will hit the woman the round after.

You all can let them die by fire or dispatch them more humanely.

You were not left for dead. You were a medical experiment.

"They came to kill not just men but women and children, rich and poor, and the old and the young die first," Emerion replies to Fina bleakly.

Emerion will intercept the woman at the edge of the web, but he isn't feeling humane enough to risk getting burned himself.

In that case, I'll have Istas delay this round until the Urgathoan emerges. Or, simply ready an action if her movement carries over to next round. Either way, I'd like to reuse that last attack by either delaying or readying an action to attack the first priest to emerge from the fiery web. Istas won't willingly enter it to just to get at them...unless she believes they're about to escape the room.

"I'm not complaining. Sometimes eggs are broken to make omelets." Fina wipes her sword on the Physician's robe.

I'll take it you're all going to let the fire do its work.

The blaze sweeps over the man. He screams and tries to protect his face with his hands. Then the fire is past him. The woman shouts at him to attack and protect the shrine. He advances awkwardly with his scythe held low.

As she drives toward the party, the woman becomes caught in the web again. She snarls and curses while the flames sweep toward her.

Istas and Emerion make short work of the burned man. An instant later the woman is caught in the flames. She calls upon Urgathoa, draws a dagger and slashes it across her throat.

They would have come at you one at a time. No challenge there. Once again you hold the field. Furnishing as described although the Urgathoan's table will shortly be a pile of ash. Two doors lead out through the south wall.

"That depends on what omelet you are trying to make," Emerion replies, recalling Deavelus' comments about delivering a strong city free of undesirables to the Queen.

Heather leans weakly against the wall the smell of scorched human flesh making her almost gag.."I must remember not to do that in such a confined space next time" she mutters to herself.

"You did perfectly well," Istas replies, moving about the room and completely unfazed by the violent deaths or smell of charred flesh. She puts away her dagger and retrieves her spear and club, hovering over the bodies to satisfy herself they won't rise again as undead creatures. To make doubly sure, she crouches over them to remove their heads, using Peacebringer as a blessed weapon of Pharasma to complete the grisly task.

"May the Lady of Graves swiftly dispense your just reward," she intones, "And I pray that She deprives you of all contact with the Pallid Princess in the Great Beyond."

"Our omelet is a better city led by our glorious queen."

Wellard, darn straight!

"Which all depends on your definition of a 'better city' and how you intend to achieve it," Emerion shrugs. "Why not, for example, introduce a plague to kill off all the 'undesirables'?"

Keliwyn wipes his blade on the dead physicians' shirt. "Is that all of them?" he asks, looking around through the smoke.
