Rusigari and Selene would be up before Tenoch, but with all of you going before the dwarf and Tenoch's roll, I think we can save you all any spells.
The half-orc swipes out with his blade, landing a lucky blow that slashes through the dwarf's thigh causing him to drop low and take the point of the sword in his gut. The large form collapses all the way to the ground unconscious, shrinking back down to its original size without the concentration to maintain the spell effect.

"Very strange. The ability to go invisible and grow large. That was not your run of the mill dwarf," Tenoch says then pauses to look around. "Still perhaps he was involved in the creation of this tunnel... and perhaps related to the strange door below, or worse the parchment we found... An army of these things could be devastating."
Tarlane |
The dwarf doesn't appear to have any magical items on him, just the residual glow from the weak invisibility and enlarge person spells.
He does have a set of gear on his person though-
Chainmail
Heavy steel shield
Warhammer
Light crossbow
Large expertly cut tourmaline gemstone
Masterwork artisan's tools
Blank parchment
Ink bottle
Quill

Tenoch looks over their discoveries. "The gem should help recoup our losses from our agreement with the hobgoblins and his other equipment may be useful as well. But what's this?" he exclaims looking at the blank parchment. "It's the same material as the note we found below. It seems my suspicions were correct. We had best see if we can find out more about what is written there."
He looks down the tunnel. "But first we should go fetch Morton and the boys. Now that we have found this alternate passage out, noone would need climb the shaft."
Tarlane |
Sorry, still having some family health issues that are coming and going and threw me over the weekend.
Moving back through the mine, you find Morton and the boys holed up in the empty hobgoblin camp as he indicated he would be, looking nervous though he is clearly glad when you all arrive. "You are safe! Thank the mother! What did you find? Did you find the end of the path?"
Tarlane |
Morton nods his head a bit, giving a concerned look though he scoops up the smaller of the boys and takes the older one by the hand. Moving back down into the massive lower chamber, you see no signs of anything having changed since the last time you were there and you are able to easily make your way outside through the newly carved tunnel.
As you walk, Morton looks around, trying to speak softly enough to not worry the children. "Who... Who built all this? I never heard of anything like this in the legends from the miners..." He pauses as you all move past the body of the dwarf and his eyes take it in and look back up at you all. "They are still here? We should tell the sheriff immediately. We need to get the little ones home, but the people should be warned."
The exit from the tunnel puts you on the side of the hill about half-way up its slope. Its completely out of site from the road and the village, though it shouldn't make things too hard. Either you can move along the slope to the road or make your way to its base and follow the farmlands back to town.
As a heads up for you guys, I'm going to end up leveling you once the characters get securely back in town(if you don't end up resting yet you just won't have refreshed per day abilities yet but I'll let you level otherwise) so you may want to start considering what you are going to be statting.

Glancing over her shoulder she notices the figure.. "Don't look now, but there's some sort of humanoid above where the entrance to the mine is.." Can she make out what it is? Knowledge Check?
Ill go be going up a level in Druid.. I'll level her when we get back to town..
Tenoch Itzcoatl |
Tenoch nods to Morton. "Indeed. This could be a precursor to something worse, if we understood the gist of the letter correctly. It might be good to have it properly translated, however."
When Selene mentioned the hidden individual, he looked in the general direction indicated squinting his eyes, before shrugging. "Perhaps the hobgoblins left one of their own behind for a message of sorts? Should we go and see?"
Selene Solaris |
"Perhaps he can cast comprehend languages.. Or maybe yall have a library that could aid us?"
Did we determine what language it is? Because i could put a point into linguistics and learn it this level and that would solve the problem..
Tarlane |
I don't believe that there was ever a firm statement of the language, but undercommon would be a very solid guess ICly.
To get up to the top of the hill will take a fair bit of work. Because you are scrambling along the scree(It doesn't take a climb check, but you are effectively climbing) since its relatively steep and loose dirt, it would take some time. Perhaps 45 minutes. It could actually be a little faster to go through inside, but then you have to deal with the lift.

The spoilers you put up for the Linguistics DC in two places stated that it was written in Undercommon, but I'm not sure if you meant that to be OOC knowledge or something we deduced from the Linguistics check and weren't 100% about.
Tenoch Itzcoatl |
Is it not along the main path to the mine entrance? Could we not go around that route, or is the only access to the mine entrance from the outside, via climbing and such?
"Be careful. We cannot know if it is friend or foe."
Tarlane |
The exit you all have taken is about half-way up the hill. You can wind your way around sideways until you meet the road, still making climb checks, and then move up the road. Or you could climb down at a faster rate, then circle all the way around the base of the hill and climb the entire road. Both of those options give you more movement speed, but add much more distance to travel. The road has to be swayback to keep from being too steep for carts.
It sounds like the plan is for Sumak to take off after him. He will cover ground a lot faster than anyone else, but it is a long distance and with no real cover. Even though the figure seems to be facing the direction of the road you should probably expect to be spotted. Is anyone going with(even if following since they can't keep up). If so, what of the kids- Are you going to have them wait while you see what happens or sending them to head back to town with Morton?
Tarlane |
Hurrying along the slope on the back of the wolf, Sumak moves as quickly as he can towards the peak of the hill. He gets perhaps half-way to his destination before the figure atop turns a bit so he isn't facing the mine entrance and takes a broader look at his surroundings. His body language speaks surprise and he obviously sees something as he leaps down from his vantage point and starts to dash down the hill as quickly as possible, running straight down the hill fast enough that he occasionally slips in the scree and topples over, popping up to his feet again with amazing grace.
Everyone can see the person after he was pointed out, so you see him hop down and take off running. He's far enough away that its likely only Sumak would have a chance to catch him since the wolf is faster than he is. Running downwards on the hill you can get up to full speed, but moving beyond your normal speed will require acrobatics checks to not slip and go prone. The person you see seems pretty nimble, so that may make him harder to catch.
Are you trying to run him down? What is everyone else doing?
Selene Solaris |
Selene shrugs her shoulders and turns to the group.. "I guess he feels the need to chase the unknown creature, who's abilities he knows not and fight it by himself.. Not a very wise decision imo.. I guess we wait abit to see if he returns.."
Tarlane |
Alright, several things I wasn't expecting, both the heading off on his own and a series of good roles meaning he is going to catch up out of sight. I'm going to put up what Sumak will see in a spoiler. Selene just said to wait, are you going to hold up for him or now that he is out of sight are you continuing back to town?
The figure and the wolf/halfling move around the edge of the hill and disappear from view as they make their way lower down the slope and head around towards the north.
Your added speed helps greatly and by the time you hit the base of the hill and the ground level out you are only about 70 feet behind him. You catch a glance back from him and recognize him as one of the men who was accompanying Jim back in town.

"Who knows... perhaps it was someone waiting at the entrance to offer us a message regarding our other interests," Tenoch says as he squints up the hill, not seeing particularly much. "The wolf is fast. Presumably we'll find out soon enough."
Tarlane |
I just realized I left off part of what I meant to say above.
