Not-spell progression and prestige classes

Rules Questions

Hi again,

Say, a class X can create things (infusions, mutagens, evocations, etc. - but not psionic manifestation) that duplicate arcane and/or divine spell effects.
Say, a character with levels in X is interested by a prestige class that includes "+1 spellcasting level" every couple levels.

Would the prestige class advance his spellcasting-like ability from X?

I would have to say no, due to the fact that mutagens and all that are not spells, even though they act like spell like abilities they are not spells though i could be wrong

Thanks for your quick answer.

I'm asking this because, as it is, we can see many many prestige classes building upon spellcasting classes (especially if we use 3.5 material) but absolutely none for almost-spellcasters.
I'd like a small "multiclassing" note in each of these classes, saying that the almost-spellcasting ability can be built upon by prestige classes as though it was arcane (or divine) spellcasting... or not.

You know, "compatibility" and all that rot...

if it doesn't apply there is no need for a note saying it doesnt. now if it does apply i guess a note could be put, but the note is normally the exception, not the rule. so classes like oracle and inquisitor obviously advance spellcasting, you gotta find one of the few "+1 existing class" classes, like the one in Weapons of legacy

Well, those classes aren't quite the same as spellcasters. Some of the PrCs might fit, but others don't. I'd say you have to decide on a case-by-case basis, and it always looks better for the GM if he can be magnanimous and grant extra boons than be the spoilsport and bar options the rules say should be allowed.
