What, you can't think of 20 so that you can rate each one 1-5?

(mathematics graduate)

Actually had a professor in college where we had 20 assignment throughout the semester, each one worth 5 points. The total was our grade at the end of the year.

Maybe I'm being mean by going 0 instead of 1, but they tend to inflate grades. Here's the thing: I've used a spread of five in the past, I think that's too fiddly for them. Many can't or won't bother to distinguish between 5 levels of quality. Also, I don't want 100 to be possible on a non-objective assignment.

For the few who will be pained by the spread, like I would be, I'll tell them they can give a .5 grade in-between if they ABSOLUTELY can't choose between the two.

I had a teacher who said that 91% was an "A" -- he didn't feel it was quite fair that "A" had an eleven percent spread when the rest of the letters only got a 10% spread.

Holy Crap!

I can't believe what I just found out. :O

Like every other morning, I parked my car outside the shipyard at 0600 on Madison Avenue next to the Effingham Plaza Apartments and then walk into the yard to get some exercise.

When I walked to my car this afternoon at about 1620, I noticed there was a news van with a tall antenna with a dish on top across the street from my car. There was also a tripod (sans camera) set up in the yard next to the van. There was another van parked a little behind my car and while I sat in my car another van pulled up and parked on the other side of the road.

I was really curious as to what brought these news vans out here and figured maybe it had to do with the really high winds we had in the area.

So, I checked the net after getting home.

Holy crap was I wrong. Here is the real reason they were there...

That cop car in the pics was probably parked 20 feet in front of my car. :O

Reminds me of the frustration I got when my final grade for Greek & Roman Mythology back in high school was 99%.

I think it had to do with the fact that I got one question wrong on the final exam and I argued and demonstrated that the answers provided to choose from were wrong given the context of the question she provided. I wish I could remember what it was.

That, along with having to correct the teacher from time to time during the course of the semester probably didn't help. I have a feeling she was assigned to teach the class without having a full background on the myths. I'm guessing she didn't take kindly to that. :S

Funny I had an American History class like that, the teacher finally asked me if I wanted to teach the class. I was floored, I did not know how to take it at the time. It made me quite timid for some time around her. I did however, 'correct' a couple of the questions asked on the final. I think she truly loathed me from then on.

Actually, the cop car in the pic was inside the parking lot so it wasn't that close to my car. The photo they had of an upper story window makes me think that she fell.

Here is a map:

You can scroll in to get a close-up.

I think the cop car was in the parking lot near where the building "bends"

My car was parked on the road. I was parked just to the left of the left most entrance/exit for the apartment's parking lot. The police were gone when I arrived and I think the camera crews were just tidying up before leaving.

Gaming question (that I didn't want to the mess up there since it really is more of an opinion question)...

Spoiler:
Summoning -- If you're a "Good" character, then casting a Summon Monster spell gets you a celestial (or fiendish if you're evil) creature as appropriate for your alignment. I'm generally ok with that. The rules don't say that a "Good" character cannot summon a devil or demon (for instance) though.

Based on the celestial template, it's seems kind of implied that "Good" characters would summon angels and the like while evil characters would summon devils, etc.

There's a logic issue with this for me, though. Why would a "Good" character take over and command an intelligent celestial being to fight and potentially die at their command. Why wouldn't it make more sense to summon an evil creature to fight evil and die doing it?

The fact that it also becomes an "Evil" spell in that case kind of complicates things as well. Most other "Evil" spells really only help "Evil" characters. But the summon spells seem a little more fuzzy with that in my opinion.

So is there a problem with a "Good" character summoning a demon or devil to fight on his behalf?

The way I understand summoning is that the creature summoned doesn't die when it would normally be killed. It just returns to its home plane.

Urizen wrote:

Final course grade, not objective test grade, right? Sorry, I can only understand 100% in a math course. There is no perfection in the human arts and sciences. Now, if they have to subtract 1% after grading because they graded it 100%, then they are just lazy f&#%ers who didn't grade it well the first time around and were too lazy to regrade it.

Spoiler:
We've had this come up a few times. Clerics are about the only class that cannot summon without their alignment coming into play and preventing the summoning of said creature.

Summoning works a little different than calling and/or communing with intelligences from outside the material plane. It specifically works for you and your cause, following your orders but with the physical characteristics of a creature of its type. Maybe some "taint" of the appropriate alignment comes through, but you're not directly bargaining or even conversing with these creatures typically.

Something like Planar Ally might call a characters alignment into question, but I'd let the summoning go. Besides, the nice thing about summoning is being able to summon a creature with similar DR. They can often bypass the DR of similar creatures due to the special rules for DR and attacks. This makes summoning especially valuable in that regard.

But as "Carp a DM" suggests, use the fluff that fits! :D
