I also won this from a random drawing and it arrived today! Going to have to give these a whirl to see if it's worth investing in more.
The missus found a job fair happening a week from today at Chase Manhattan Bank in Mortgage Lending. I figure I should game this opportunity as I have an extensive background in Consumer Loans which should help translate over. I hope that I can sell myself in person to stand out from the random pieces of resumes. Take a 20 and Charisma those mofos.
And in 4 days, I will see an awesome concert trifecta of Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax ... for free!

Good. The new store is opening next week, and I will be headed down there. I think being in a hospital will be a fairly steady stream of customers. The new boss is a real cool guy, and has some vision about expanding, which is refreshing in these times. Plus, I have the time off I need to watch my daughter. So it's a win-win.

This is the part that my woman is NOT getting every time she pushes me to go for an education while I'm still unemployed. Yeah. I need more debt. :S...Amount of money I made or will make in 2010 working as a freelance illustrator: $0.00 +/- $0.00
Amount of money being borrowed to work towards a degree in illustration in the 2010-11 academic year: $48,000.00 +/- $1,000.00I'm seeing a pattern here. Not good.
This stuff I really don't get. How are colleges charging this kinda coin? My wife went to a Cordon Bleu program for one year, and came out of it with $60,000+ in debt. That's $512 a freakin month for 10 years. She got one of the best local jobs at one of the top restaurants and was the envy of her peers. The pay rate? $10/hr. And found out you'd have to work at that level, busting your ass for about ten years before ever getting a chance for a higher-level job.
I wonder if there's going to be an 'education bubble' like there was a mortgage bubble ...

I am going back to get into a trade program because that is the easiest way to get through school, and head out for the workforce. Oy! Tell me about it. Got a 'gentle reminder' about it last night. Methinks if I just get that job, she'll let it go for now. Don't get me wrong; I know I need to advance my education, but not at a cost of being more in debt. My partner has been so depressed and agitated about not finding a job since graduating. He's been reaching out to friends just to occupy himself, but they're all to flakey to be any help. He sits at home a lot, which is depressing.
I work a job everyone knows I can't stand and come home tired but feel like I have to entertain somehow. With no time for myself, my writing projects for grad schools are at a standstill. And somehow for all that effort, I never have enough money, and still live paycheck to paycheck.
I can see the way out, sort of, but it all depends on us staying miraculously motivated, which is in shorter and shorter supply lately. Yesterday was bad. It dawned on me in choir practice yesterday that I was only there because they are paying me; I don't enjoy it anymore because my mind is always elsewhere. But I have to find a way to continue to stay strong enough for two.
Anyway, I just needed to vent.

Is there anyplace nearby that he could volunteer? Volunteer agencies often need help, it would get him out of the house, improve his feelings of self-worth, and might even get him networked with people who can aid his job search. It also looks better on a resume than "between college and now I've been sitting around." As a hirer, I respected volunteers as people who were motivated enough to do something with themselves and give back to the community, even without pay.
On the downside, it can sometimes be difficult to find a volunteer agency that simply needs willing hands or that one fits in with well. But it's worth a shot or two. If not, can he knit or crochet? I can send some yarn and he can make us some hats and scarves for the shop!
In the meantime, good luck. It is hard to work at a job you dislike, but knowing that you're the breadwinner is good motivation, huh? Nothing like feeling trapped. Keep your chin up. Things are starting to improve, though slowly. It really *could* be worse.
