No one ever knows how, Jeremy. It's a learned thing. Patience is key. I don't know the situation, but more than likely the little girl will be scared and unsettled with the change in her life. Acting unsure or nervous will be reflected tenfold by her.

Children need love, attention and structure. Don't make the mistake of thinking she is a very short adult. Children are their own species. She will be doing totally illogical things, but that is how she learns the logical things. Keep a patient mien and an open heart and you will do fine =)

Good luck my friend.

+1 to everything Patrick said. And never show fear. They can sense fear.

And if you don't know the answer to a question - lie! Kinda like when my wife got a really short hair cut and asked me what I thought.

Edit: Also - Keep them away from a TV, since TV rots brainnnnsss and therefore reduces my food supply.

Thanks all for the responses, still freaked the hell out though. Gah I must be one of the only gay men in the world who ended up with a child unintentionally. But family is family and it is my niece after all.

Kind of curious (and if you don't want to answer, that's fine) -- Will the parents just be you and your husband or will the birth parents be there as well. (I thought that you mentioned that the mom will be staying with you as well.)

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood morning Fawlty HOUSE!!!

Took a nice long leisurely shave with the straight razor today. Damn it feels so smooth. presses face against computer screen Come on. Feel.

Got a meeting at the second job tonight which means I'm probably going to miss the weekly game. It sucks, but thems the breaks. I'll be meeting my new boss tonight, so here's hoping I make a good first impression.

Also, picked up the next issue of Tales of the Dragon Guard yesterday. Damn but that comic is good. I may just get into french comics as a result of this...I did NOT expect it to be THIS good. An all-female, all-virgin army against the dragons and the effects they have on the world. And it's NOT cheesecakey. You'd think that would be a requirement for me(it usually is- I'm quite disappointed with the change in the Power Girl staff/storyline), but it's just a kickass story. ANd it's good to see some muscular women who are NOT supermodels for a change.

And..well..that's about it. Here's hoping the day is full of adventure!

Smooth like Joss Whedon's one-liners.

Hi, FAWTLies! I hope you are all doing well. Been out of the loop for a bit...will continue to be out of the loop for a bit longer.

Four days until the beginning of my major INSURV inspection. Stress levels very high.

I hope none of my equipment breaks between now and Wednesday...

1995 crime drama. Slick stuff.

Everyone in a certain group of criminals would say "Boat drinks" wistfully... meaning, someday they'll be down in the tropics, on a boat, drinking boat drinks. To the better days to come sort of thing.

Boat Drinks is a Jimmy Buffer song.

It is! And I don't have a DM character, so all I can do is watch from on high and despair.

Liberty's Edge

Hand cramps everyone!

Today I feel much better. The game went well last night and I think I found a DM to take over my spot in D&D Encounters. That is a relief. I don't like just walking away from things without creating a solution for my departure.

The latest Metroid game is giving me fits, but it is generally fun. So my hand cramps are true indeed.

Originally she was, but she has decided that parenthood is not something she can do. My husband and I will be the legal guardians at that point (and incidentally the only ones physically or financially able to take care of the child hence it is our responsibility). So yeah still freaked out but I still say blood is blood she is my niece and she'll be given the best chance I can give her.

Good luck, Jeremy. It sounds like you really care about your niece, and that will help as you raise her. It won't be easy, but watching her hit all those milestones and just grow into adulthood will be worth it.

(Even when they turn into teenagers and suddenly think you're the biggest idiot in the world)

That's actually a better scenario. "Too many cooks..."

In which case I'll just say "ditto" to what others have said. With the additional -- if you weren't nervous or scared, I'd be concerned. People who go into it thinking that it's easy are stupid and end up doing a poor job. Also, don't be afraid to ask for help or advice. You don't always have to follow the advice but it's often nice to get a different perspective.
