I have 8 Book cases around the walls my double garage. 4 full size (taller than me) and 5 half size that are pretty much full. This doesn't even cover my cards and board games.
I absolutely hate card games. If I could take every single magic card and make one gigantic bonfire, I would gleefully do so while dancing naked in drunken debauchery knowing I had destroyed the abomination.

I don't hate the games, I hate the fact that the only way you can *really* play them is to spend a lot of money on them.

Magic the Gathering was how I learned to shuffle cards well. ;-)

I actually have good memories of collectible card games. It was a fun way to mindlessly hang out at the game store for hours at a time. Of course, I haven't played in 16 years... (Wow, I'm OLD...)

What if Magic: The Gathering apologized for flooding your house and running over your dog?

I don't know what it is, it just provokes a visceral hatred response whenever I see magic cards. I just want to go buy an ultra rare "From the vault" deck first edition or something go to Gencon get on stage and then proceed to shred and burn them in front of all magic lovers. It's the sort of hate response that digs down deep, it's like when someone mentions 4e in civilized company. Even if it were to apologize for its god-awful unholy existence I would still seek to destroy it with every fiber of my being.

All I saw was that you were thinking of moving to CA, and it hit that magical CA button in my head where I get ready to spew a bunch of things that I probably shouldn't--and not just because they were probably irrelevant to your question. So, what was your question? Can you give me the specifics?

Okay, here's the scenario in more detail:

Spoiler:
We like CA - I know lots of folks don't, but we do. In fact, we've been making some beginning plans to move there this fall. If we go there, though, my best choices for schools would be UCLA (only fairly reputable in my field - people either thinks it's "meh" or won't touch it with a 10 foot pole) or go north to Berkley and Stanford (both extremely difficult to get into, and I don't know anybody that could help me get into those schools).

Where I do have people that could help me get into good schools is in the east coast ivy leagues. Specifically the department chair at Yale telling me I should go there. So the question is - live where I'm trying so hard to get away from in order to go to Yale (awesome), or live where I want and go to UCLA (less awesome).

I know nobody can answer that but me, but how important would you consider the caliber of the school?

I play 4e as well. But I was more trying to make a humorous parallel between my hatred of Magic, to some of the responses to 4th Ed I've seen. Maybe it failed :P

Edit: I'll see if I can make a better humorous analogy before the edit time is expired. However I play pathfinder more than 4th.

Huh. When did UCLA get easy to get into, on the graduate level? Or does it vary widely by programs and I'm more familiar with tougher programs? Back when I was looking at UCLA, they required a minimum 1600 on the GRE.

I'd say:

1. Know your field. My field, for example, is so damn difficult to get a job in, that you want anything that's going to give you an advantage. (Coming from a guy who followed his dream and put the "M, you really should go to Harvard" push in the toilet bowl. Of course, I really doubt now that Harvard will really be the advantage that it used to be, but I digress.) Does the difference in schools really harbinge a significant difference in outcomes for your field? Is it a difference you can live with? Maybe talk to some alums from the program.
2. I really prefer NoCal to SoCal, if it ever comes to that, but this may be totally irrelevant to you.
3. I may know of an awesome upcoming change in rectorship in Fairfield, CT. You should go to Yale and join their choir. ;P

Okay, so maybe one was helpful.

No worries freehold. I get paid to run 4e games down at my buddies shop. It's a premiere event for WOTC, I do it once a week now. But in my private home game with my friends it's pathfinder. Hope that alleviates some of the disappointment.

Spoiler:
At UCLA it's a program-specific thing. It's not easy to get into, per se, but is rather infamous for its politics and infighting, such that many reputable faculty and even grad students have left. That's done a number on the quality of their program, and also makes me wonder if I could be setting myself up for frustration.

Spoiler:
This is very important to find out about. I've seen how politics can cause some attrition even in a small program, but I knew going in that the program was growing in size and reputation in spite of that, and that my advisor (endowed chair with his own flair for politics) was powerful enough to keep most of that crap (but not all) from effecting me, so I was good. This is another good reason to track down some alumni and some folks in the program and talk to them. Nothing is more important. Me, I got a life long advocate for my work in my advisor, and an instant brotherhood with all his past, present, and future mentees. But other people, for example, go to the same program and have very different experiences, just because of the people the worked with.

So besides me being a ridiculous geek, I am super excited for the next minis collection in September. I just saw who they're doing miniatures of in this set and I was floored. In this set alone they are releasing Yeenoghu (Large), Dispater (medium), and the one for me Mephistopholes (medium).

Reminds me...

My son starts school today at a new school. We were at an orientation event a few days ago to meet other parents and teachers, etc. One of the parents of a student around my sons age was very nice. We find out that they moved here a year ago. Since we are in "military central" I asked if she was military. She said that they were. I then asked where they came from. She said Nova Scotia. I then had a confused look on my face -- I didn't know we had any bases there. Probably do, but I hadn't heard that one before. She misread my confusion and said "It's in Canada." I was kind of annoyed, but she probably gets a lot of people here that don't know where that is. Turns out they are Canadian military and they are participating in some kind of exchange program. Kind of cool (I thought). Just thought that it was kind of funny that she had to explain that Nova Scotia was in Canada.

*blink*

Afternoon folks. Hope the day finds you well.

CH, go where you want to experience life. Does it really matter the caliber of school? Of course, all opinions are just that, opinions. I'm sure school caliber means something to someone these days. Me, I'm pissed at institutions of higher learning in general for the outrageous fees they seem to demand, while producing little in job benefits. Told my daughter to go to a trade school, much better ratio of cash paid to job procured IMO.

*blink*
