You asked for it, we solicited it, and now it's ready for patronage-- Dan Voyce (_Tales of Zobeck_, _Halls of the Mountain King_, and _Tales of the Old Margreve_) is leading the way on this one.

Quote:

The time has come to brave the frozen empires of the savage north. Here honor is more common than steel, trolls and giants battle the gods, and a hero lives by strength of arms and reckless courage. Frozen Empires: Glories of the North is a 80-page sourcebook detailing the icy northern realms – their geography, culture and magic.

Liberty's Edge

This sounds really cool. Will it be using the Pathfinder rule set?

The Exchange Kobold Press

This is absolutely a Pathfinder RPG project!

Sovereign Court

Noooooooo ! Another Great product I must simply buy .... aaaaaahhhh.

I'm in.

The Exchange Kobold Press

Glad you like it! The material will be perfect for Ustalav, Irrisen, and the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, I think. We'll be mixing a little historical knowledge with a lot of kick-ass fantasy elements, just as with Sunken.

And (from what I heard at PaizoCon) the new PC class/race material should work neatly with some of the new Barbarian, Ranger, Druid, and Fighter elements from the APG.

I cannot wait for this. Sunken Empires was a topnotch product and this peaks my interest even more

Zombie Sky Press

Hurray for frozen awesomeness!

Seeing what was put out for Sunken Empires as I have the dead tree edition, the intrigue grows... :)

When is the release date?

It's got to hit greenlight first, I think. :)

Cool! This one sounds really cool. Maybe this is the one I actually jump in and try a patronage...

I meant more in terms of a general estimate

The Exchange Kobold Press

Assuming that the project is commissioned by mid-July, the design and playtest work will take 3 months and then there's edits and layout and art.

So, I'd say it probably releases in the dead of winter, around January or February. Longer if the commissioning process is slow or if the playtest uncovers problems.

That seems...appropriate somehow. :)

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Charter Superscriber

Awesome!

Quick question, and maybe I'm just completely overlooking it, but is the "Midgard" setting the one that encompasses Zobeck?

Thanks!

You have sharp eyes, Elorebaen. Midgard is indeed the name for the Zobeck setting.

Scarab Sages

Sunken Empires is so loaded with awesome, I just had to sign up as a patron on this one!

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Charter Superscriber

Thanks WB. It has been great watching Midgard grow over the last couple years.

The Exchange Kobold Press

Thanks, Boerngrim! We're moving toward meeting the commission on this pretty quickly.

And Elorebaen, I never planned for Midgard to be more than a placeholder, but ... well, I've grown very fond of it. Glad you like it, and I hope to expand it a bit more with tools from the APG and elsewhere.

EDIT TO ADD: And hey, Frozen Empires will definitely expand some of the northern clan elements, with reaver dwarves, race and feat elements, and grudge magic, among other things.

The Exchange Kobold Press

Commission is at 30% for this book!

Ha! Releases in "the dead of winter." Eeesh. I am still shuddering from that one.

Commission is at ~50% for this book!

65% of the way to meeting the commission on this project!

I have to say, the brainstorms to date are right on track for wilderness and northern characters of all stripes, and the proposal to do expanded shapeshifter rules is good as well.

Will there be a pathfinder adventure to go along with this

MerrikCale wrote:

Right now, I don't believe so, but there will be adventure locales detailed.

-Ben.

The Exchange Kobold Press

Correct, this is a PC sourcebook plus new monsters and portable locales that should fit into Golarion rather seamlessly.

There's no accompanying adventure scheduled for it.... Though if Erik Mona asked, I'd be happy to write one. Or ask Tim Connors to lead the charge, he did an awesome Norse adventure for Red Eye of Azathoth.

Thats too bad the Sunken Empires and From Shore to Sea combo was a nice synergy

The Exchange Kobold Press

Oh, I agree, but that sort of alignment doesn't happen every time out.

There will still be a LOT of material here that is immediately useful for players in both homebrew and Golarion games. Most standard fantasy settings have Norse, Scottish, Russian, Finnish, or other northerly analogues. And most have Hyborians of one stripe or another.

and I can't wait

next up Buried Empires???

Another book for my 3rd Party want list.

We've got a preview for this project up here!

Welcome back from GenCon to all the brave adventurers that made it this year. Hope the plunder was good and the trolls of below average strength. For those who didn't (like me), I hope you had a nice weekend and didn't (like me) turn too billious a shade of green with envy.

This week in the frozen north we're adding locations, NPCs, and adventure seeds to Thule and looking at the lost kingdom of Hyperborea and the polar wastes, and senior patrons are invoking the dark vengeance of Grudge Magic. It'll be a busy and important week for the project, with a fresh influx of patrons who may have heard about us at GenConso.

Why not JOIN US on our longship to Valhalla? I promise equal shares of booty and glory... for those who make it back alive.

Quick update:

This week we start to hit the crunch in a big way: Grudge magic, the dark and dangerous power of revenge is manifesting in a suite of vendetta-finishing spells, incantations, and magic items, then we're onto Nordic rune magic (and maybe rules for skalds), a plethora of new survival rules such as snow blindness and 'white outs', hyperthermia, spellcasting with frostbitten fingers, and foraging/crafting in the snowy wastes), plus a bestiary of patron-created monsters of the frozen north - some drawn from myth and legemd, others unique creations.

Mapped into Wolfgang's world of Zobeck, the meat of Glories of the North will be easily adaptable to any setting. Golarion fans should find it perfect for enhancing adventures set in the Land of the Linnorm Kings or the Realm of the Mammoth Lords, but it’s also ideal for adding detail to the north of Faerun or Oerth's barbarous Telchuria or the Hold of Stonefist. We’re also throwing in gazetteers of three flavourful lands you can 'cut and paste' into your own game world: The viking fjords of Trollheim, Thule: The Last Continent, and the hidden valley of Hyperborea – all created from the fevered imaginations of patrons.

If anyone has any questions about this project or Open Design patronage, just give a shout and I'll answer as best I can.

Keep on rolling
Dan

Dan. I have no idea how I missed that you were the author on this, other than I am obviously crap at noticing the names of my GMs when they crop up on the interwebs.

The Exchange Kobold Press

The project is around 70% funded, and seems to be picking up a lot of support since GenCon.

Lots of good stuff for barbarians, rangers, druids, and fighters in this book, I suspect, including new gear, magic, and creatures.

If you liked Sunken Empires, please consider giving Frozen Empires/Glories of the North your support today.

Nermal, hi there! Expect an email shortly, threatening you with the wrath of Odin if you don't subscribe. On a more positive note, its exactly the sort of thing you'd love to stretch your creative muscles on... and good practice/prep for next year's RPG superstar.

In other news: There's a new preview up on the Kobold Quarterly site:
A neat feat, a spiteful spell, and a snowy stone!

The Exchange Kobold Press

This project is now 90% of the way to its goal!

Join the crew today, before we set sail (and the price goes up!). I have a very good feeling about this project, because so many great D&D/Pathfinder elements come straight out of the sagas.

Liberty's Edge

Just the other day our DM commented that he was itching to run some adventures in the land of cold and snow and ice - he was getting tired of playing in a nice temperate climate all the time. When this is ready for general purchase we will have to pick this up.

Quick question ... We mainly play in Golarion. How easily will this port over? Any idea where it would fit? I could see the Land of the Linnorm Kings for instance maybe?

Marc Radle wrote:

I would say it should fit Linnorm King lands or Mammoth Lords equally well.

The Exchange Kobold Press

I'd agree with those, but I think it's going for a somewhat broader definition than those.

Ustalav, Irrisen, Brevoy, Numeria, and Varisia would all fit neatly into "the North" as defined by this book.
