That sinkhole is 100 feet deep and 65 feet wide, or thereabouts. It only leads to the first layer of the Darklands.
It's wider than one that opened up in the same city about three blocks away in 2007. But the 2010 hole is a mere puppy in terms of depth (so far). The 2007 sinkhole was 330 feet deep and about 40 feet across. That one might punch down straight through to the second layer of the Darklands :)
Guatemala City is built on volcanic rock, most of which is pumice - some of which is not. The problem is leaking pipes. When there are leaking pipes it's big trouble in that geology. Water mains are the big culprit, and yes, Guatemala's infrastructure is very poorly maintained and constantly leaking. The water can dissolve the rock below and sooner or later, it lets go. Rather dramatically, as you can see.
If you are anywhere near when it does let go, they may not even be able to find your body.

I believe God has stolen the idea of sinking a Guatemalan city from Gears of War.
