Frankenstein's Biological Ancestor

This is a mammoth of an article! Very interesting, as is the discussion of other scientists goals in the same field!

Just a minor quibble but they've created a fully artificial genome, rather than truly aritifical life. They still need a perfectly normal bacterial cell to replicate and produce actual life. But still a major achievement and certainly necessary if truly synthetic life is ever to be created.

Which is also my quibble with this. While outstanding and something that can open a world of possibilities to future generations. It is in fact not LIFE per se.

Jerry Coyne has posted a very reader-friendly review the reasearch and some of the ramifications HERE.

Although I must say if they think life is just a bunch of chemicals they are very narrow minded indeed.

I would disagree.

A literary connection to this work

Some questions just how significant this result is

It is excellent work but there is concern that Venter might be overplaying this and even if he isn't, there is still a great deal of work before this becomes a widespread process.
