I'm a celebrity, what the heck am I doing here?

Kingmaker

I'm just about to start GMing Rivers Run Red for my group, so I've been running through some kingdom building trials so as to get a grip on the rules. For some reason Visiting Celebrity seemed to be a recurring Event, which got me thinking what sort of "celebrities" are likely to turn up in this backwater barony?

Who are people using as their Paris Hilton of the month?

Cheers

I used Maegar Varn and entourage at one point. Visitors from Brevoy also work well. Depending on where in RRR you are when you roll this event, the scholar who goes to Varnhold may stop by on his way east. And when all else fails, you can create your own NPC hailing from most anywhere. The River Kingdoms are a good choice, but even places further away would work. You can substitute "dignitary" for "celebrity" and go from there. :)

Jon Brazer Enterprises

Regionally famous wandering minstrels and travelling performers fit the bill very well. Medieval times didn't have world wide famous celebs like we do today. They had regionally famous personalities and groups. Heroic tales went as far as the bard could travel, unless the bard told the tale to another bard.

Other famous celebs that work well: well known adventurers or big game hunters looking to earn some coin or recognition in an untamed backwater, other royalty coming to dis on your lands, or well known priests acting as a missionary.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Lost Omens, Rulebook, Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

If you got a devout Iomedaean in your party, First Sword Knight Anarrow ( Female Ftr2/Clr8 ) is a prominent cleric of her goddess, who leads the House of the Gauntlet in New Stetven in Brevoy. An aging woman who has been hardened by the loss of her three daughters, she still takes interest in a promising new acolyte... or maybe in a new realm growing on the border of Brevoy, with a prominent member of her faith in a ruling position.

As long as they're peeping out a window as the masked PCs are climbing the wall, I don't care who they are. I'm good.

Sczarni

Some higher up pathfinders might be cool - either passing through on a mission, or scouting possibilities for new lodges. And it also presents different roleplay opportunities depending on if your group is or has pathfinders or not.

You could, if you have run previous campaigns in Golarion, have the players' previous player characters stop by for a visit. Players seem to love cameos / bit part moments involving their old characters, when such a visit makes sense.

Liberty's Edge

Adventuring groups.

I've used adventuring groups, a famous war leader on his way north to lead a Mendevian crusade, famous bards/theater troupes.

Funny story - the very first random event I rolled for my second Kingmaker group (I'm running two separate groups) happened to be a visiting celebrity, so I decided it was a fairly famous Pitaxian Bard. And then I rolled a 6 on the d6... followed by another 6... and another 6... I believe that one visit netted them between 21 - 23 BP.

The PCs immediately recruited the bard (whom I had to randomly name on the spot) and made him their Grand Diplomat.

If you're feeling a bit silly, you could also base your celebrity on a real world celebrity. Your group of bards could be "Copperback" or "Justin Beaver", your politician could be "Lady Hillary of Clintonia", etc.

Well, that last one is probably too silly for me, but you get the idea.

Thanks for the ideas. I had already pegged Maegar Varn, so I can foreshadow VV. The silliness angle is a possibility too, if I can just think of a suitably annoying RL personality to cameo :)

Gilbert Gottfried as a particularly annoying fey critter perhaps? ^_^

This is the event I was hoping the most that my players would get. Instead, they got 3 Outstanding Success in a row.

If you are planning on going into the Issia / Rostland conflict, I would suggest either Lord Jamandi Aldori from Restov or an important member of the Surtova family from New Stetven.
