DM with 'L' plates: Into the Haunted Forest and beyond

Oh, I'm thinking of running a very small game, to see how my DMing goes in PBP. If all goes well, I'll start Legacy of Fire afterwards, but don't hold me to it. So if anyone wants to trust to a DM with 'L'earner plates run through a small adventure to start with, not a campaign, then read on....

The premise I would like to start with is.....you are all from a small market town, probably young friends starting out. Maybe some of your parents are retired adventurers, maybe there are even siblings amongst you. But essentially I would like a relatively good party to set out together on a journey because you want to go adventuring together...(I am open to any background that provides for you want to go adventuring together and know one another beforehand).

...one of you has a letter of introduction to a friend of the family, Waldagy Jorthin, in the small city of Caerin Tun. Here working as a merchant he has offered to oversee the education of one or more of the group to identify and develop their heroic skills, in return for help with running his merchantile business.

...it is possible the adventure might move further on than just the initial Into the Haunted Forest...

So this is a wilderness adventure for 1st level characters, in a 'normal' fantasy world of forests, plains, mountains and stuff, think Western Europe.
I will run the adventure for 4-6 characters, it is NOT a Pathfinder Society run mission.
The deadline for character submission is midnight 14th May, I'm in the UK so midnight Pacific seems a good time for you all to stop.

We will go with the 20pt character build.
Normal Pathfinder races and classes, including the 6 from the Advanced Players Guide(Final Beta).
The game will be played here as I have uploaded my maps already.

I will choose the characters that will...
1) Provide a balanced party
2) Have a good backstory and personality
3) Some idea of how you might want the character to progress
4) The ability scores
5) the 2 traits chosen...(toying with the best backstory getting 1 extra trait?)

I will not expect a character to be fully formed,
in fact I half expect not to look at the character sheet except for those things above. I am probably showing my naivity as a DM here,
but we'll see how it goes.

I used this character a while ago in a PBP that ended with a TPK, but I'd like to play him again. The background is in the profile, and it wouldn't be too difficult to update the character to Pathfinder and bring him down to a first level rogue.

The Exchange

I am interesting in playing a paladin. I'll provide you with the requested info later during the day. Hope I make it!

'Ello der!

I'd like to join as this would be my first pathfinder PbP. I've played a lot of post elsewhere, but have looked to find something that uses pathfinder instead of the now very boring 3.5

This alias is the character I would like to run, a Half-Orc Ranger/Fighter. Probably more Ranger than fighter. Anyways, you've already got one half-orc entrant, so that could possibly link the two of us? (Brothers friends etc? I dont know how many uglies are in your community.)

Please consider me. Thanks.

I'll finish updating my skills and feat choices soon.

How are you doing starting gold? Here's a roll just in case.

4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 1, 2) = 12

This is Wilhem with my halfling paladin, Herc. He's not done yet, but you can look at his stats. I'll make updates as the day go by.

I'm not tossing my hat in. Just wishing you a good game and letting you know I'll be lurking this one, for sure. I've got too much on my plate as it is running two and playing in three!

Best of luck, and I look forward to this one getting off the ground! I'm just disappointed I don't get to see Parneth in action, as he is my first alternate in CotCT.

Anyway, game one, mate!

This sounds like something in which I would be interested. I am thinking a wizard, probably one that makes things go boom if only because they are a lot of fun if not terribly effective. In fairness to my coworkers I will finish the design and post it later tonight after I am done with work.

Kyle would like to play. - ghost of adventurers past.

I humbly ask permission to accompany you on your adventure.
Aravan,
I hope you don't feel like I'm stepping on your toes. I figured our concepts were different enough to warrant as second wizard. If this is not ok with you I can retool this character to Cleric/Fighter

The Exchange

Perhaps you need the skills of a "finder of lost things?" Or maybe a quiet woodlands scout? Look no further! For the small price of an equal share of treasure you can obtain the services of a first rate trouble shooter.

Artreus Quinfrig Esq. at your service M'lord!

If selected I will gladly flesh Artreus out and roll starting gp per your direction.

Aravan here with my wizard. Oh and Awev, I have no problems with an arcane archer, I am more of an evoker with a little talent with a sword if anything.

"Well friends lets be off, I don't know about you but I grow weary of this town life."

So a couple of notes about Gram. First off the plan is to take 1 lvl of fighter, and the rest mage, transitioning into Eldritch Knight. Basically he's brash, quick to anger, quick to forgive and likes to be in the thick of things.

Secondly in a perfect world instead of my second trait being Desperate Focus I would much prefer Heirloom Weapon out of Adventurers Armory. But since it isn't one of the base traits I figured I would ask first. Lowdown on the trait, it would allow me to start play with a masterwork weapon(I would choose my grandfathers bastard sword). The ability to use that weapon, though not any other weapons of that type, and a +1 to hit with that specific weapon. I would still have to purchase the base weapon with my starting cash and in that case I would get rid of the smokestick and alchemists fire and replace them with the sword.

Oh and that background was semi-generic and could be modified to fit into your world, say if orcs weren't the major threat of the area and some other creature would be more logical.

I think the character is entirely upgraded to PRPG. If Garret advances, I think he'll stay primarily rogue.

Garret is a big happy guy, agreeable and willing to trust, but not an idiot. He likes having somebody else tell him what to do, but isn't hopeless on his own. He has an idyllic view of adventuring and his father and is eager to have his own. Life hasn't easy, but Garret has accepted everything that comes as normal.

Standard Starting Gold

On a good note...the maps are now all in place...

DM Deevor,

Have you decided which 4 or 5 people your allowing into the game?

Buried in the initial introduction is this....

The deadline for character submission is midnight 14th May

So I will make the decision after that date.

Hoping there will be healer type along, not sure if the oracle can give enough healing, we'll see. I'll be looking more closely at the characters this weekend, and see how things are going so far.

Throwing my hat in.
Silvus was created for another game wich does'nt seem to be getting off the ground. Have edited the background.

Concept: Bardic priest of Cayden Caylen.
Direction: Eldrich Knight, support fighter/healer/buffer + battlefield control

Background and stuff in sheet, will finish it up today.

starting gold 3d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 6) = 13 x10=130

I know I said I wouldn't look at the character sheet syet, but I'm interested in Kyle Reyford being fleshed out a bit more character sheet wise. I am also a bit confused by Herc, his stats look set up for a paladin/rogue????...can you add background and some idea of how you see the character progressing?

I'm enjoying looking at what we have so far.

shopping left

Sovereign Court

OK, I'm thinking of running this twice and seeing how it all plays out...

Currently I'm thinking...
Group 1
Garret "Sledge" Whitestone: Half-Orc Rogue
Groot Kraktool: Half Orc Ranger
Gram McCray: Human Wizard(Evoker)
Kyle Reyford: Human Oracle
and
Group 2
Herc: Halfling Paladin
Awve: Elf Wizard
Artreus Qinfreg: Half Elf Rogue
Silvenus Krupt Human Bard.

Bit light on fighters, particuarly group 2
the halfling paladin, won't kick much damage,

Let me know how you feel about this, still room for more.

Deevor, the stats are so because Herc is going to be an archer. I will get some background info before the 14th.

If your up for two games that sounds great.
Since Awve will not be in the same group as Gram I'll probably switch to Evoker, instead of Illusion. Also I'm planning on taking my next level as Fighter so that will help out a little.

Edit: If Herc is going to focus on archery I might try something else.

I think the paladin will do quite a bit of damage if he hits consistently. Two things to think about:

1. The lack of a tank to stand in the path of monsters.

2. The lack of healing in combat.

Ahh..now I understand about Herc, he was the mini tank I thought, I may need to change a bit then. I'll see if I can find a fighter, or if someone else turns up. Hoping Herc can do some lay on hands and the Bard can so healing too...but you can always buy some potions at character creation time.

Could you use a healing, buffing witch?

I'll jump in as a "tank" character if you want a 5th to round out a party. See profile for rough character concept, history is a work in progress.

I will be interested to play however I am a bit new to PbP, not pathfinder rule set or character creation.I am not shy at Role play as well. If there is room for me please consider. I will check this thread often

I still have to do some shopping, but I've posted the statblock char sheet.

Just looking at the initial post I have seen it is not clear I want to take and play the games at roleplaymarket.com, as this is where I am setting up, the maps are there already.

I hope this is OK for everyone, if you don't want to play there then you can withdraw your character from the game.

Hopefully you won't, cos I think its a pretty good gaming site for PBP.

Yes Cyruss if you want ot make a tanking paladin for group 1, that would round it out.

I like the idea of the witch and the 'tank', for group 2.

Am I able to make a high AC fighter or do we need some extra healing?

Sovereign Court

Cyruss wrote:

The only one in group 1 with healing is an oracle, so there is some, but maybe not that much...but you can always buy potions when in towns and stuff. It's up to you.

The Exchange

Hey Deevor,

Im sorry, but it you do play on the other sight then I will not be able to post near as much as I could on here. My work comp has that sight blocked. If you decide to run a PbP game on the forums I would be more than honored to play with you all.
I shall take my leave and slip once more into the comfort of the shadows.
Fare the well!

Seeing as it is my first time with PbP, I would like to play something rather simple for me (fighter class). I guess we will be sucking down potions and relying on the Oracle. Since we plan to play on that different website, how should I go about setting up my character? Is it similar to this website in which I put the character in my profile? Ill sign up for an account today after I finish some things and check it out for myself. Thanks

Interested to try a game as Korl the Unlucky, and his un-buddy Ruin.

Only problem is that he is from Mwangi-place.
Would it be alright if I worked it so that he ran from his terrible reputation and escaped to the obscurity of Caerin Tun? Or should I completely redo him to fit the more western theme?

Thanks Deevor! Sounds exciting!

I'm going to have to withdraw from the game. I have too much on my plate and don't want to drag the game to a crawl.

Hey Keevor.

As much as I'd like to play, I'm also blocked from Roleplaymarket.

I'm afraid Grott will have to withdraw.

Sorry mate. Good luck.

Grand Lodge

Shucks, didn't see the roleplaymarket until just now. I'm going to have to withdraw Korl. Thanks though! Hope you guys have fun!

Sovereign Court

Thanks to all those who gave me the heads up on playing, I'll rejig and it'll probably just go down to one game. I'll take a look at the rejig tomorrow.

It's a shame, as I was toying with the idea of having the 2 groups meet sometime. However it still means I'll be running the game there, as not only do I like the mapping there, it allows messaging as well, which is good.

As for the character sheets, I was going to just cut and paste from paizo to the character docs over there...so nothing fancy.

Would it be possible for me to slip in an extra character at the last moment? I'm thinking about either a paladin or maybe a slightly more caster-focused cleric of some kind. I could have the character prepped for you by morning

Sovereign Court

Following the rejig.....

I'm thinking...
Group 1
Garret "Sledge" Whitestone: Half-Orc Rogue
Cyruss: Fighter type, not sure what race or class....might be nice to have another half-orc.
Gram McCray: Human Wizard(Evoker)
Kyle Reyford: Human Oracle
Gryphon Gold: healing/buffing witch

Group 2
Herc: Halfling Paladin (archer)
Awve: Elf Wizard
Gavin Gladrock Human Cavalier
Sia, either a paladin or cleric, your choice, preferably not a half-orc.

then its back to 2 groups...

I like both groups, so go ahead and create your starting characters.
I may have one opening left, otherwise this is gonna be it.

If you want to set up accounts at roleplaymarket.com, then send a message to me, Deevor over there and we'll start to get things rolling.

Finished updating my stats and will be fleshing out back sory and description as soon as possible.
Deevor: I created an account at Roleplayarket.com and will be sending you an email.
Group 2: As far as back stories; how do you want to meet? Gavin could be an old friend of mine from school. One of the few that stuck up for me and I like hanging out with him because his life makes mine look not as bad. Herc Since were both focusing on archery we could be friendly rivals always looking to best each other in difficult shots. Let me know what you think.

Okay, just for reference here

Starting GP: 5d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 1, 2, 1) = 12 x10 = 120 GP

I signed up for roleplaymarket as well. Shot you a message via that site. Looking forward to playing. Oh, and for Garret "Sledge" Whitestone: Half-Orc Rogue I was wondering if you wanted to come up with a cool back story since Ill be a half-orc as well.

Sovereign Court

OK, the first invites have been accepted, please when you accept, just send a your name in the character sheet, we will take the details from Paizo. I wiil split you into 2 groups and you will only be able to see and edit your own and your groups objects.

I will open the Out of Character Threads immediately and the Characters, once I have started to set up the groups tomorrow.

I always like cool backstories...

You can see how to use points for character creation at
ability scores

Done! Waiting for approval at Roleplay market. I am familiar with Pathfinder and their rules, just not the PbP method of playing. Reading your above post it looks like we are doing a 20 point buy? I'll go ahead and make my character sometime tonight after the hockey game (Go Flyers!).

Howdy. I've never done a PBP before but I'd like to try it out. Is there room for one more?

I was thinking something human and rogueish.

Well, I already have a couple paragraphs of backstory in the profile here, so maybe you ran with me in the gang. I'm open to other scenarios.

DM, I sent a message earlier through RoleplayMarket, but don't seem to have any response (I'm ghettowedge over there). I have no experience with the site, so I'm going to need some direction in getting my character over there.

Garret's backstory really doesnt have room for me. I like it tho. Your stroy is solid but my character can fit in to it :/ maybe someone else from within our group is interested in having a half-orc mercenary that uses Bolas and a falchion?

Hmmm....I'm not too sure about Roleplaymarket.com as a reliable site. The more I see of it the less I'm liking it, though right now the specific issue I'm having is that I can't access the game forum despite being logged in and approved.
