Getting the wife to play a RPG

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

After years of convincing, we finally convinced the wives of some of our gaming group to try RPGing once with us. Suggestions on a nice entry level Paizo Pathfinder module or adventure?

Crypt of Everflame or Hollow's Last Hope/Crown of the Kobold King. The later pair is 3.5, some a slight conversion work might be required. However it also features rescuing kids, something wives might be partial to ! :)

While I think Crypt of the Everflame is a great intro module (as is Crown of the Kobold King), I'd make sure that you're catering to what kinds of themes they enjoy. What I mean by this is that you should gauge their expectations and level of interest and focus your campaign on topics and play you think they'd get a kick out of.

For example, if she enjoys strategic board games she might really enjoy tactical combat, but if she's less into the fights, you may find running something a bit more political and more story oriented the way to go. As somebody who once tried (unsuccessfully) to get a significant other into role playing, those first few sessions are key to showing them what's possible in roleplaying, and to remove some of those preconceived notions that never brought them into the hobby in the first place.

The entry level Merchant's modules of the Legends of the Shining Jewel campaign are also a good start and they've all been converted to Pathfinder.

Be careful though ... you might not know what your getting into.

Gorbacz is on the right track though. :)

Thanks for the recommendations and ideas.

+1

While it's something to keep in mind for every player, regardless of gender or spousal status - you need to make the game fun for your players. Especially since you're trying to convince someone new to the hobby to play.

Two major stumbling blocks I can think of off the top of my head:

1.) Gauge the crunch-factor carefully. Not everyone has fun calculating CMD. Nor does everyone enjoy hearing "That's a hard-corner and you can't move diagonally". I'd play it very fast and loose with the rules.

2.) Avoid competing with the PC's. It's a stereotype certainly, but not all women enjoy competition as much as men, so don't make it about the GM vs. PCs.

Everyone has a different definition of fun, and the best GMs are usually those who can figure-out what that is and deliver. You (hopefully) know your wives best.

I recommend the Orc and the Pie.

Now that is a good introductory module.
