There was a time when I wanted a facial piercing, but I am such a coward when it comes to pain I couldn't do it. Even that little bit of pain made me too nervous. Same with getting a tattoo.
Yeah, I know, its pretty sad but at least I admit it. :)
It's not for everyone. I must have a high pain tolerence, I would only consider one of my piercings to have been truly painful. The rest stung or were uncomfortable or I didn't even feel.

there are two kinds of gamers, nerds and metal guys. the two styles of play are very different. i am from the cleveland, ohio area so i know a thing or two about the metal scene that's still around here. it doesn't really matter what you look like when someone finds out you play D&D, they react poorly unless they play.the stereotype is basically that your an ass that dresses up like a wizard and runs around in the woods with a stick yelling weird crap in a jbberish language. and as usual Kae Yoss zings one in, bath salts, you crack me up (no sarcasm intended as it is impossible to tell in print)

When I lived in Thornville (out near Buckeye Lake) Comic Shop Plus was my game store. I liked it overall. If I remember correctly it was quite sizable. I am not sure how much has changed, but I always felt like it was a good store.
I like Ravenstone games. I wish it wasn't in the neighborhood where it is currently located, but that doesn't matter a whole lot. Mostly, I don't get out there because it is on the other side of town for me. But I did like the store and the employees were polite and helpful enough for me to go back.
I am happy to see another local as well. We could almost start a band or something. :)
I'll have to check it out tomorrow (Saturday) since the lil lady will be out of town for the weekend.
And as for Ravenstone's vicinity .... yeah ... not the best, but some gamers prolly wouldn't mind that there's a strip club a stone's throw away. I can't speak for the quality of said establishment, but it's there.
I usually go by Ravenstone (not often) if I'm looking for something off their clearance rack. If memory serves correctly, they put more focus into Wargaming and 4e, right?

When I lived in Thornville (out near Buckeye Lake) ...
A couple of months ago, I took my lady out to Buckeye Lake because she kept complaining I've never taken her there before. I warned her it wasn't what she may want to expect ... and I was right. Man, that place has gone downhill. =(

Missed opportunity! You should have said something like "Yeah, they're like bath salts, you put them in the tub with you and they dissolve and you get some kind of kick. Those from chess sex are the best if you know what I mean."
Have him explain the whole RPG concept to you. Play stupid. I'm sure we all tried to explain our hobby to the uninitiated at least once, and we should know what people usually get wrong about it.
Try if you can break the guy. :D
Heh. I wasn't wearing my tinfoil asshat that afternoon. If it happens anywhere else.... =)

Did you go to the town of Buckeye Lake? Because that place is a pit.
The area around Thornville has exploded with housing recently. Which is really not a good thing. I haven't been home in a long time, but I know they built a sub-division right on the lake. The homes in that area couldn't be worth less than million dollars, or something stupid like that. Next door they built condos. It is a very sad thing to see. Naturally, the locals aren't too happy to see the "invaders" moving into what used to be a very rural area.
The lake itself has too many boats on it and boats that are actually a bit big to be in that lake. The filth in the lake is likely worse than it has ever been. Fish kills are becoming more common, so I have heard, and too many farmers are likely lacing the waters with the chemicals they use on their fields. Some of those channels run rather far inland to the surrounding farms. As a side note, one time we saw a sheep that had gotten swept away by a flooding creek float down our channel. It was pleasant.
I still have very fond memories of being out on the water. Our house sat on a channel and we had our boat docked there all year long. We would go out, sit on the lake, and watch the sun go down. On 4th of July we would watch the fireworks shot off at Wolfe Island. It was fantastic to sit on a boat and watch how the sky and lake would light up. It was liking watch fireworks while sitting on a mirror.
But the lake is really not what it used to be. That is tragic, considering how it looked during the 20s through the 50s.

I used to live just south of Worthington before re-locating myself. It was a great area and I loved it. Unfortunately, cost and space factors made us look for a new home. But I am surprisingly happy now, so I guess it wasn't all bad.

I stopped by that store in Newark earlier today. It's mostly comic books and wargaming stuff. I did pick up a couple treasures, though. They had a MINT copy of Traveller d20 along with d20 Past and the original Dragonmech book. Discounted all of it for me. Nice. =)
Stopped by the Armory. Can you believe they sold this for TEN BUCKS! I ASKED TWICE to make sure I was reading the sticker correctly. Sheeeit. It left with me. And this too? Marked down to $15.00. (Bruce wasn't there this evening.)
THESE PEOPLE ARE ENABLERS! THEY INFECT ME WITH BIBLIOWHOREDOM!
Luckily, no-one asked me today if I knew what they were used for. Maybe if I had picked up some Chessex dice again....heh.

KaeYoss |

there are two kinds of gamers, nerds and metal guys.
What am I, then? I could be considered a nerd (very intelligent, working in IT, know a lot of trivial stuff) and I listen to several flavours of metal. But I keep my hair short, and can lead conversations with people without going into three-hour discussions about Who Shot First.
I'm obviously some kind of freak. :D
it doesn't really matter what you look like when someone finds out you play D&D, they react poorly unless they play.
Well, around here, you earn blank stares. So you don't bring it up - not because it's embarrassing, but because trying to explain the hobby is just too wearisome ;-).
and as usual Kae Yoss zings one in, bath salts, you crack me up (no sarcasm intended as it is impossible to tell in print)

There seems to be a monopoly for Chessex dice just about everywhere I've been. I'm ignorant on what makes quality dice; just an observation.

yes Kae Yoss there are exceptions to the rules, i also know lots of stupid things, love metal, love watching sports (go cleveland browns) and i sing in punk rock bands and rockabilly bands, sometimes i have a devilock sometimes i have a pompadour, i don't have piercing or tattooes. i am a nerd and a sports junky, and muscician, and i love D&D. so in short, yes you are some kinda freak among the people who play D&D and i know this cuz i'm an expert on the situation.

You did say "we're", though. Several gamers in the same household or multiple personalities? :D
Ha! I meant my girlfriend (who is a big nerd, but only a part-time geek, and not really a gamer at all) and I.
I was in Grandview until last October. It was nice there, lots of good stuff within walking distance. I'd been there 10 years so Worthington is a nice change of scenery with its own advantages.

I'm ignorant on what makes quality dice...
So am I, but this thread seems to have some educated opinions on the subject, particularly this post, and these five posts. To sum up, those posters find GameScience dice to be better for true randomization, if you're willing to shell out extra money. (This is not an advertisement; I've never tried GameScience dice, so I wouldn't know.)

Thanks, Aaron! I remember reading that thread when it was initially active. Incidentally, that Dice link is now dormant, so I'm not sure what happened to that.
The site for the gaming pouches doesn't seem to do anything for me, though. Be curious if anyone know of any other sites that have "interesting" ones. (?)

Ah...the Guard Tower. Rudeness, the smell of cat urine, and unneeded requests for personal information all in one package. They do have a hell of a selection of minis though.
I hardly go there anymore, mostly because I am allergic to cat urine and I can never know if they changed the litter that day or have left to reek for a week.
At least that is how it used to be. If that changed, more power to them.
I asked about the name thing once. I was told they tracked how much you spent in the store for discounts or some such thing. Apparently the hundreds and hundreds of dollars I laid down in the past wasn't enough, so I pretty much think that wasn't true. Your guess is as good as mine why they keep asking for it.
I like the Armoury a lot. In fact, I rarely go anywhere else. But you often need to do a lot of special ordering for certain products. I don't mind that, but I know some people might. The owner of the Armoury, Bruce, is super nice person and doesn't fit into the stereotype either. He is usually attentive and willing to help out when he can. His store's clientele is remarkably eclectic, which makes for an energizing environment when a major event is going on.
Speaking about stereotypes, I would like to think I don't fit those. I am a bit chunky (though I am losing the weight finally) and I do maintain a beard. It is a well-trimmed beard, but it is a beard nonetheless.
Armoury Games in Pickerington? Yeah, I like that place a lot. They keep a pretty neat selection of all sorts of games, and the owner(I think that's him) is always super-nice and really helpful. My wife and I went there a few weeks ago, and his kids were running around and playing with our daughter. It was pretty funny and made for a really relaxed atmosphere. He's always been really helpful with hard to find stuff, and I always find something interesting super cheap. I once found the last Ravenloft Gazetteer I needed for only $5... Online distributors at the time were wanting well over $125! I even asked him a couple times "Seriously? $5? SOLD!" lmao!
Those little perks(not to mention traveling distance) are what keep my wife and I going back there, even though the store is probably 1/5 the size of the Guard Tower.

What I really miss was the BW&BK fest they had at the Odeon. I went there for three years straight when it was there until the last showing in 2005. Saw a lot of good bands, exposed to some new ones, met some folks, and raided the merch. When it transferred to Toronto, it was no longer viable. =(
P.S. You know Theo @ WRKZ launched Metal Shop last night, right?
EDIT: And local bands radio play was launched the hour before. He's on my friends list; want me to push some ESB his direction to play on the air?

That'd be pretty cool! I would myself, but it always looks tacky when a band representative suggests his/her own band, which is why I haven't pushed them yet. I sent the radio station some mp3's and such, so they should have something on hand. If they don't, we can get some more to them!

I don't notice the cat urine smell at the Guardtower, whether it be gone or my nose shuts down as a defensive mechanism, I don't know. They also carry KQ!
Donna enjoyed going when we'd take Rocky out for a ride because she could take him in with her.
*deep breath*
I know of Packrat comics in Hilliard, but I don't think they carry gaming stuff. Might see if they want me to run something for the kids on free comic book day.
Not been to Comic Shop Plus for years, not since the first wife actually.
Soldiery, feh, never had good service there.
I think there's a store on Brice between Livingston and Main, but I don't know for sure.
Ravenstone has a nice gaming area (and no cat pee, Allen)
The Hobbyland on North Hamilton is getting back into gaming. Mostly cheesehammer but some RPGs.
Thornville may be growing like a (toxic) weed, but Somerset is pretty unchanged. Still angry the ELCA sold St. Paul's church though. It's a site of a lot of church history in Ohio.
Allen, have you been to the middle/high school recently? My Goddaughter had her last middle school concert and the middle school band was the size of the band when I was in High School.
Give me a bit more time to heal before I plan another gaming group, sorry gentlemen.
And who was behind the counter at the Guardtower? A couple of them know their inventory, but one or two guys... someone used a 10 point buy on them, if you know what I mean.

I have 5 cats myself, though I got them since the last time I was there. It has been a long time since I have been to the store. Perhaps it has improved. There were days my eyes would water and my nose would just stop working.
Though, as a person who is allergic to such things, it is possible I am just more sensitive. The store might be just fine and my insane body is to blame. :)

The irony is that I'm allergic to most cats and dogs. But my love of animals triumphs over it. But I swore to my lil lady that I will not get any more cats. When the job and money situation improves and we figure out when/if we'll relocate, I wouldn't be surprised if we'll pick up more dogs in the future as I really don't see children in our future.
After awhile, you tend to get used to your animals. Sometimes, I think the allergy immunities become adaptive to a degree. But I'm not a doctor or an immunologist, so don't quote me on it. :D

What?!? Who did they sell it to? The amount of church history in the whole town is monumental. I can't imagine just selling that church. Next you are going to tell me is St. Joseph is a bar and grill now. :)
Allen, have you been to the middle/high school recently? My Goddaughter had her last middle school concert and the middle school band was the size of the band when I was in High School.
That is impressive. I haven't been to see the schools since they built the new high school. That seems to indicate the school population has increased, which is a great thing for that district.

You should really take that as a compliment! The guys in my gaming group and I get the same reaction when we tell people we game. We are all metalheads, some former and others currently active musicians in metal bands, and some people just can't wrap their heads around us sitting in a room slinging dice and slaying monsters. Go fig.
Clearly some people have never heard of fantasy metal bands which are becoming quite common. But really I've known a few metalhead gamers.
