Tie up with manacles

Rules Questions

After a successful grapple check, two actually, can a character use manacles instead of ropes to "tie up" his opponent?

If we can, are the mechanics any different?

Would it be easier or harder to use manacles? Seems to me manacles would be like using a crude version of handcuffs and might be easier to apply.

Can the manacles be made of a better quality material to increase the DC to break free? Like adamantine or maybe even mithiral?

Any thoughts?

Scarab Sages

I would think you could use manacles instead of ropes with no modifications.

Manacles have a set DC for Escape Artists checks. I wouldn't think the material would make a difference for Escaping them, but would make a difference for breaking them, modifying the hit points and hardness as per the material.

That's exactly why I want to make them from a stronger material. The lowest DC to get out of the manacles is by attempting to break free via a str check.

Mind the energy drain. A woman dressing like that in a fantasy setting can only mean one thing.

Well, actually, two: one has fangs, one requires a banishment spell. Both are lots of fun.

Liberty's Edge

no game breaking difference for the manacles.

The women in fishnet we can talk...

Masterwork manacles increase the escape artist DC by 5 and the strength DC by 2.

The strength DC is lower, but ability checks inherently get a much lower result than skill checks. A DC 26 strength check requires a 22 strength and a natural 20. That will probably hold a first level barbarian; 18 base, +2 race, +4 rage is 24 strength, so he needs a 19 or 20 before he runs out of rage (and before the guards notice).

It is also harder to get bonuses to ability checks than skill checks. A level 1 rogue could have a +12 escape artist: +5 dex (18 base, +2 race), +4 (1 rank in class skill) +3 (skill focus), which actually makes it easier for him to escape than the raging barbarian.

Skill focus is probably not going to be his first level feat, but by 10th level, +18 is reasonable: same dex (+5) and 10 ranks (+13) so he only needs to roll a 12 to escape normal manacles or 17 to escape masterwork manacles. The fighter or barbarian is probably only +1 or +2 better at the strength check, based on ability increases and magic items (which are also available to the rogue).
