abstract's ROTR Campaign - Recruiting for two replacements

Gamer Connection

One player dropped out as soon as we started (some time ago), and one has just had to take an unfortunate indefinite leave of absence.

The players have thus voted to recruit two new PCs.

The link to the game is here.

Please review the posts and let me know, succinctly, what sort of character you think you would be creating in order to complement the group?

I'll keep applications open until Wednesday 3rd March.

Hi there, I've got a cleric of Cayden Cailean that I had made for a past Rise of the Runelords that went south. We didn't get much farther than the opening fight with the goblins, so meta-gaming won't be a problem.

For a short concept, he is a Varisian Human who use to live in Sandpoint until he took up the worship of Cayden Cailean. After many years away, he decides to return to the small town. He considers himself to be a decent brewer and he believes in all three concepts of Cayden Cailean. Alcohol helps boost bravery, which is needed if one is to be free from whatever constraints burden a person.

Though he believes in Bravery, he is by now means a strong person, as such, much of his divine magic focuses on aiding others and complementing his more dexterous style of fighting. He would have the Charm and Travel domains to reflect this more roundabout approach to combat and his desire to be free to find his own destiny.

I see all parts are taken as "key" roles.

Cleric, Wizard, Fighter, Barbarian, Bard.

I'd love to take on the roll as rogue though.
I've been thinking about a stealthy halfling rogue.
Or the "Skill Monkey" as some would call him ;)

He would have been born in Korvosa, to poor parents, working as servants.
He has enough of the downtrodden and ridiculed life, but of good heart.
He started stealing from humans to distribute it amongst his halfling friends and family. This led to him almost being arrested and hung. His two best friends rescued him at the last minute, and joined him on his travels.

Good natured and friendly, you could see him as a small Robin Hood ;)
He hates oppressors and will do anything to help the oppressed.

Although he's not a great warrior, his aim with his sling is strong and true. But his skill lie not with his fighting, his true skill is his golden tongue and ability to go anywhere unnoticed.

Spoiler:
The trio decided to have a look at the festival in Sandpoint and got jumped by the goblins. One of his two friends got killed, the other got gravely injured. So he's still in Sandpoint, waiting for his friend to heal.

I've a few character ideas I've been kicking around, let me know if either would fit in your campaign.

The first is a Paladin of Sarenrae. Trained in the sand swept dunes of Qadira, she is as unrelenting and fiery as the sun that beat down on her back. He's an agent of Sarenrae and as such as received specialized training as a dervish (And would subsequently take the feat that allows you to attack with a scimitar and use your dex bonus as for your to hit and damage modifier when you have your second hand free, from the Qadira companion).
Personality wise, he holds the code of Sarenrae to the utmost. Even the most vile of mortals deserve a chance to redeem themselves. For those that are through and through evil, the closest thing to redemption may be an honorable death. Don't let that fool you, though, Saresh models himself as the fist of Sarenrae, bringing Her fiery justice to the dark corners of the world.

Although smaller than most fighters, dont let his stature fool you. He is nimble and quick, both in mind and body. He refuses to lie, and even subtle deception, such as a sin of omission, is below him. He is quick to help those in need, and will often put himself in peril as a measure to protect his peers. He is not the most trusting fellow, and takes things most strangers say with a grain of Taldan salt. When his Diety demands, or when the situation is most dire, he will work with those of evil alignments, but will do so with gritted teeth and will likely not be very happy throughout the situation.
He is a charming fellow when working with the world at large, and will often try to use words before his sword. He regards life as a gift, and when time and situation allow, is known to enjoy life to the fullest.
His greatest fault is probably his modesty, which can sometimes be viewed as a lack of confidence.
Mechanically, a LG Paladin of Sarenrae. Favoring Charisma and Dex as stats, a melee frontliner, and also somewhat of a party face. I promise, he wouldn't be Lawful Stupid :)

Another character I like is a raving Oracle of Flame. Found at the Worldwound in a smoldering crater, she has never been quite right. Prone to, literally, explosive bursts of mad ravings, but also insight that seems to come from nowhere. She seeks to right the wrongs that the foul demonspawn of the worldwound inflicted on her, although no one but her are really sure what those wrongs were.
She is quick to light on fire any who threaten her or her friends, but has little regard for social norms or local regulations. She has a violent hatred for any evil outsiders or undead, but more for personal reasons, it seems, than any personal code. She sees herself as a prophetess and seeks to cleanse the world of its wicked ways through the purity of fire.

Mechanically she would be a Oracle of Flame, CG and probably focusing on the AoE Flame Revelations and taking spells that debuff her opponents, as well as spells that specifically oppose undead and evil outsiders and the occasional divination spell.

Dark Archive

I would submit a rogue or sorcerer, both from cheliax; if spots aren't decided. I will give more feedback in an hour, at work.
I am experienced in d&d (7 years, much of it as dm), little experience with pathfinder but I own all the books and wish to learn.
Background and personality to follow.

I have a concept for a human ranger kicking around. I wrote it up for Second Darkness, but it fits just fine for ROTRL.

Raised in Korvosa, he turned his back on the strict traditions of his ancestors, the barbaric Shoanti people. Living in poverty and considered a second class citizen, he began making living as a ruffian and street thug at the age of 14, a period of his life he has come to thoroughly regret. At 17, he left Korvosa behind and began serving as a bodyguard for traveling merchants traveling Varisa's often dangerous roads. He has found himself stranded in Sandpoint by the untimely death of his previous employer (not his fault) and is rapidly running out of coin, so is eager for a new gig.

With his roadworn and dirty clothing, he won't look like much, but he values loyalty and will fight to the death for his friends. He has seen enough fights to keep himself out of trouble, and can brings skills as a wilderness guide to the table.

In mechanical terms, he would be an archery path ranger who is N/NG.

Primary Concept: Zvelenka, a Sorceress using the Linnorm bloodline from Wayfinder #2 (it's very similar to the Draconic bloodline, but gives senses instead of claws). Her great-grandfather fought a Linnorm but refused to kill it, instead befriending it. Because he didn't actually kill a Linnorm, he was not recognized as a king. Zvelenka grew up hearing this story, and tried to change the tradition. Being very stubborn and outspoken, and not particularly tactful, she was eventually exiled. She is convinced that the way to prove her point is to have many epic adventures until she can come back home and prove her point through brute strength.
She'll fit in well with Ashbek and Cuu due to a similarly barbarian mindset, and her spells should complement Redeye's nicely (I'm planning on focusing on ice spells, fear inducing spells, and conjuration). She's also a human woman with a high charisma, but no training in civilized social interactions, which could lead to some entertaining RP opportunities with Aylmora.

Secondary Concept: An elderly human noble whose country estate was overrun by goblins, forcing him into the city. He yearned for a life of adventure in his youth, but never got a chance due to family responsibilities. Now the rest of his family has died, and the recent goblin attack has rekindled his youthful dreams. He would choose to remain with the party rather than rebuild his estate once the goblins were dealt with.
Mechanically, he could be either a Summoner with a level of Aristocrat (and a not particularly combat-focused Eidolon), or a Cavalier. Either way he's a melee/mounted combatant.
He doesn't really interact in any special ways with the current party (which is why he's the secondary concept), but he doesn't conflict with any of them either and would probably get along quite well with everyone.

Tertiary concept: I really want to play a necromancer, but given the reaction of the party to looting the goblins on page 3 I don't think one would fit in, regardless of how good his morals were. If you disagree with that assessment, I can develop this further.

Addendum: I'm currently running a game that has one of your players (Kobold Cleaver) in it, so he may have additional insight into my gaming style. I tend to enjoy games with a decent RP focus and fairly heroic characters, both of which your game seems to have.

If you'll allow classes from the Advanced Player's Guide, I've been thinking about an Inquisitor.

A half-elf, born and raised in an orphanage in Magnimar and molded into an Inquisitor by priests of Sarenrae, who is now searching for answers to longstanding questions.

That's seven applicants to date. I've asked the existing players to have an opinion too - so expect some feedback soon as we're about to start the next phase of the adventure.

Actually, only I objected to the looting thing, because Redeye doesn't like corpses. For that reason, I think a necromancer would be fun, and create some interesting conflict.

Kobold Cleaver wrote:

Well in that case:

Senuset (Human Oracle of Bones) was born and raised in the far-off kingdom of Geb, so the common use of necromancy is something he has never thought twice about. He still left his home country in disgust, however, because of the condition of the local undead. Senuset is a hypochondriac, and the idea of rotting corpses walking around fills him with dread. He left home as soon as he was old enough to travel by himself, and is making his way as an adventurer while he hopes to learn of a place where he can practice sanitary necromancy in peace.

OK...dathom and far_wanderer, you've been chosen.

Please post your character development in the discussion thread. Ideally you'll have a fully fleshed character by next Monday.

The original thread was here, and this should cover points buy, cash questions etc.

You'll be level two now and I'll most likely hand out a little money very soon and you're about to get the opportunity to get some more interesting booty in the next week or two.

Please post here or on the discussion thread to show you're still interested.

And many thanks to all that applied.

By discussion thread you mean this one here right? Instead of the old one you linked to that has the character creation information?

Second question - was there a preference between my character concepts? I'm divided between Zvelenka (the sorceress) or Senuset (the necromancer). All else being equal, I'd choose Senuset simply because I'll probably be less likely to find another game that allows a necromancer.

Third question - I have distilled the following from the discussion threads:
-20 point buy
-Second level
-One trait
-One RotR Player's Guide bonus feat
-Average gold for 1st level +20
-Max hitpoints at both levels
-No magic items of any sort without GM approval
Is that correct?

I prefer Senuset personally.

I agree with K.C. - I think Senuset could be very interesting.

Senuset it is, then. I'll make a post in the discussion thread when this profile is complete.

Not having heard otherwise, I'll assume the answer to my other two questions is "yes"

A belated 'yes' and 'yes.'

Calling dathom.

If I don't hear from you in 24 hours from this post, I will need to offer the spot to someone else.

I missed this recruiting thread the first time around. And I see that you had 7 applicants for 2 spots so you already may have your alternate in mind, but if not I would be interested in joining your campaign. Especially considering that our other campaign together seems to be dead on arrival. Too bad, Eroril was so looking forward toward the journey to Loremaster.

Tordek - If you can post a quick concept (say within three hours) I promise to consider you.

TDLofCC - your rogue is accepted into the party - assuming you don't hold it against us for not choosing you first time around.

Could you post within 24 hours to let me know you're still interested and then give an indication how soon before you can have the character created.

Oh well - I was on my way to work when you replied. Thanks for the consideration. Have fun TDLofCC.

Schweet :)

Is this still correct:
-20 point buy
-Second level
-One trait
-One RotR Player's Guide bonus feat
-Average gold for 1st level +20
-Max hitpoints at both levels
-No magic items of any sort without GM approval

If so, I can have a character up and running pretty fast.
That is, if work doesn't swamp me again today ...

That's correct. Just catch us up when you can. There is enough to do before the point where it would be difficult to add you for a while - but even then, I have a cunning plan.

Will do .. I've started on him .. can't figure out if I should go combat rogue .. or focus on stealth :)

Both are very interesting.

TDL - Any update? Thanks...

Sorry mate, Real Life has crashed into my Online Life ... creating a time shift rip-like continuon in which I have lost all passing of time.

If all goes well, I should have him up somewhere today.

-TDL

Cr*p .. I'm sorry people .. but Real Life won't let me.

So if someone else (Tordek perhaps :)) already has his character fleshed out, pick them.

Else I fear I will hold up the game too long.

Sorry!

Kjob - are you still interested?

This would be my third PbP, but I can handle it, and am interested. Is there anything in particular that you're looking for? I know I had two concepts suggested previously, but am pretty open to playing just about anything depending on what the party is lacking?

Being objective, I would say the group lacks a rogue type - but they are a good blend and are getting by without worrying about traps and locks. Therefore, I would suggest you play the one that you will get most enjoyment from. I would like to jump into the next main thread before the week-end, so if you could have your character ready by then, we can plan a way to link you into the party.

Sovereign Court

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Still recruiting? How about a spot for Ersigen? A sinewy young halfling with an enormous ball of curly brown hair and great bushy sideburns. Good teeth. He is rugged and muscular and knows his way about the fields and woods. He has an affinity for animals and loves dogs. He wears an enormous onion-domed top hat so as to fit his massive 'fro. Great plumes of sweet weedsmoke billow from his long curved pipe and linger in his locks. Began his career as farm hand then stable boy and then as a ranger (lvl 1). Living by an orchard he developed a taste for fruit brandy and he soon set up shop running the farmer's copper still in a little shack at the edge of the forest. He rode the farmer's dogs, hunted in the farmer`s forests and tended to the farmer`s flocks. For cash he collected the farmer`s fruits, fermented them and made brandy for the local yokels. Life was good until one day the foolish lad had a scandalous and ill-advised affair with the farmer's wife as well (and she isn't even a halfling!). Now he's drunk and penniless in Sandpoint and looking for work. But first he has this bottle of hooch to finish. Looking to switch to the rogue class.

I think I can help everyone out! Always important to play a character with...well...character in a PbP; assuming its ok with you, probably roll up an arcane trickster...probably Wiz 1/Rog 1 for now. Character was attending a mage academy, but kicked out for being a bit of a prankster, had to survive on the streets, but plans on continuing his arcane studies once things...stabilize.

Ill try and have something built up by tonight if not tomorrow afternoon.

No offence, but Kjob had shown a great deal of interest previously and is working on his character as we speak - so we'll have to pass this time around.

Minor nitpick, should I be using the average gold for lvl 2 plus 20?

Kjob wrote:

I can't remember, so max it max for class - but no magic weapons or armour without consultation.

Bad news, abstract...due to real life circumstances...
Just kidding:

Tashik "Kjobs character" its pretty much done. Just need a few minor tweaks, equipment and a feat mostly, and he's ready.
Character sheet is ready for review.

I was told average gold as if you were a first level character +20.

*AHEM* Where's my email, silly DM?

Ga disregard my post about Tashik's character sheet being ready, it would appear the update was devoured by the forum monster. Basically he's a high dex high int wiz 1/ rogue 1. He's an elf that's been all over the place and recently settled in Sandpiint as a spy/thief for hire. He only takes what he deems as noble jobs and will pervert those corrupt clients who hire him, little regard for local laws...Prankster, does what feels "right."
I'm mobile at the moment, but Ill reupdate tonight.

Ok, NOW Tashik is pretty much ready to go.

Bloody Rugburn wrote:

Can you be more specific? I'm not aware of any contact with you - and I'm not aware of promising any players an email and not supplying it.

If you want to jump in at any time, feel free, but in a couple of days, I have an ideal spot for you to meet the rest of the group. It's up to you.

Ill just wait till it fits in with the story better, if you like? No reason to break the fourth wall if its not needed.

A bit confused. The last time we contacted each other was over five months ago. You were on the reserve list in case anyone dropped out early on. One player stopped after about a hundred posts (from memory) but we didn't replace him.

When it came to offering these places, I didn't want to do it on a first come, first served basis - hence the Gamer Connection posting. I apologise if you expected to be automatically in without contacting me. I had hoped I had made that clear from the posting.

No, honestly, there was no expectation of getting in. I was just poking fun, and it seems to have gone off-course. Sorry!
