PaizoCon General Discussion

One of the great highlights from last year's PaizoCon was getting to see dozens of different gamemasters and burgeoning writers put their spin on the setting with cool custom adventures and even new takes on the system. Let's start a running list of what will be run this coming year and who might be interested.

Last year's format was very effective, s let's just borrow from that. Be sure to include the following in your pitch:

Title of the game
Description of the game (the back cover kind of text)
Minium/Maximum # of players
Gaming System/edition
Maturity rating (G, PG, R)
Player experience req. (None/some/walking PHB+DMG)
For what Character levels, or will characters be provided?

Return to Chinatown
...a man would have to be some kind of FOOL to think we're alone in THIS universe. - Jack Burton

July 14th, KSFX News - Historic downpours have flooded San Francisco's Chinatown, washing away some of the oldest structures built by Chinese immigrants, including the historic Golden Jade Temple. Meterologists are cautioning everybody to stay inside and stay dry, because San Francisco is in for another dark and stormy night.

100714 20:17:39 - PCX Underground - Golden Jade wasn't just a temple, you know. Word is, Old Man Egg built that place to keep things out and down, you hear me? With it gone...who knows what can crawl out? Keep your eyes open - some things shouldn't come back on this night.

Players: 2 to 4
System: PFRPG/d20 Modern/Ninjas & Superspies Hybrid
Maturity Rating: PG 13
Player Experience: Some
Character Level: 7th

Spoiler:

Wait, is that a repeat of last year's game? Yes. Yes it is.

Starfinder: Hephaestus on the Drift
The UNSF Hephaestus has seen better days. The freighter has gone adrift in the Polaris system, dangerously close to the border with the marauding Stryfe warlords. With the freighter's crew unresponsive and her orbit quickly decaying, a crack response team is needed to investigate the ship and rescue her crew and valuable cargo. Starfinder is a homebrew sci-fi version of the Pathfinder RPG; take control of one of the UNSF's crack emergency response teams in hostile space fight aliens, save lives, and unravel a dangerous plot.
Minium/Maximum # of players 2-6
Gaming System/edition homebrew Pathfinder sc-fi system
Maturity rating PG
Player experience req. sme Pathfinder experience would be helpful
For what Character levels, or will characters be provided? 5th level characters will be provided

I've been mulling over doing a game at PaizoCon, and inspiration struck during some commenting on my DeviantART page and here on the boards. Combined with my now-defunct 4th Edition campaign, set in an Andoren town known as Blissford, I figured I could make a nice little Golarion-themed one-shot adventure.

With kobolds.

Dungeon Keepers (tentative title)
Description: The kobold tribe, the Dwarf Eaters, has been working for a mysterious and dangerous longshanks female named Misra Ebonshear for the better part of two years now, and while the spoils have been steady, King Chaagaak hungers for more. Several devoted clutch-mates and servants of this mighty kobold king have stepped up to draw unwary adventurers into their trap-filled lair, like pigs to the slaughter.
You are these kobolds.
Using time-tested methods of pink-skin butchery, you and your fellow kobold allies use traps, stealth, guile, and the power of sheer numbers to overpower, rob, and murder as many low-level adventurers as you can before your exploits draw too much attention from the forces of civilization or your murderous employer.

Minimum/Maximum # of Players: 4-6
Gaming System/Edition: Pathfinder RPG
Maturity Rating: PG
Player Experience: Some
Character Levels: 1st-3rd (undecided); characters provided

I might also run a 4E-based Gamma World game, if the book comes out in time. I don't recall if it does.

Well, that sucks. I thought it'd be as such, but I always hope my Swiss-cheese brain missed the good news.

Maybe for PaizoCon 2011, then? Hmm...

Is there an official schedule somewhere, or is it all open gaming?

Either way, I plan on having two games prepared to run, depending on if I get any players this time :)

First:
Title of the game: Campus Crusade for Cthulhu
Description of the game
As students at Arkham's famous Miskatonic university, you are all members of an ancient order keeping secrets past down from before most people started recording history.
Your local chapter has been incorporated as a student club on-campus. But, on the eve of the culmination of millenia of effort, a new force has arisen to stop you: the Student Activities Committee.
Join the cult and stand up for your First Amendment right to summon the Great Old Ones in the manner you see fit.

Minium/Maximum # of players Min: 4, Max: 8
Gaming System/edition Call of Cthulhu, 5th Edition.
Maturity rating (G, PG, R) PG-13
Player experience req. (None/some/walking PHB+DMG) None
For what Character levels, or will characters be provided? Characters are all provided.

Second game:
Title of the game: There's a Mutated Fly in my soup.
Description of the game
The Great Fire was so long ago nobody remembers when. For hundreds of years, your village has thrived on its small island. While you sometimes hear stories of people discovering ancient relics in the ruins of the Longago, you've never seen such a thing yourself. You have been happy hunting, fishing, and trading all the way south to the Island of the Beast-Men and North to the Forbidden Landing and the Wall That Isn't There. But now something is threatening the life of not just your island but all those in the world sea, and your shaman has called upon you to help.
Minium/Maximum # of players Min: 4, Max: 8
Gaming System/edition Metamorphosis Alpha, 1st Edition.
Maturity rating (G, PG, R) G
Player experience req. (None/some/walking PHB+DMG) None
For what Character levels, or will characters be provided? Characters will be provided, or can be generated on the spot.
Note This is old-school style gaming. You are likely to go through a few characters during the adventure. MA first edition was quick paced, wonderfully imbalanced and often lethal. I found my game notes from the game I ran while waiting in line overnight for the very first showing of The Empire Strikes Back.

Green Blood on a Black Rock

"You heard me right! my troll Bertha here can tear your stupid beast apart in a heartbeat. Yeah, I’d bet my entire hull on it!”
No monster-fighting tournament is more barbaric and senseless than the annual Green Blood on a Black Rock. You play a dastardly Free Captain ready to bet his hull full of captured goods that your enslaved beastie can shred all comers. Come to this event with a cool pirate name and shrewdly draft from a list of available critters. Then play your beasts in a bracketed, one-on-one, anything-goes death match. Bring your luckiest die, 'cause there will be a lot of green blood on everybody’s favorite black rock. The captain whose monster survives to the end gets the honor of having one of the most famous monsters of the Sodden lands, the monster to win Green Blood on a Black Rock for 4710 A.R.!

No characters required – just bring lot’s of energy and, if handy, perhaps a Bestiary. You may wish to read up on the Sodden Lands in the PCCS (hardcover) book on p. 135 for flavor. Note this is an elimination game and it won’t fill the time slot for everybody. Some people are either going to wind-up spectators or enjoy a long lunch! Spectators welcome for side bets and cheering!

Troop 13 - adapted by Greg A. Vaughan (6-hour slot)

In Summer of 1920, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, Arkham's own Troop 13 sets out for a week-long camping expedition to little-known Powhatan Island in North Carolina's Outer Banks. As part of the expedition, Scoutmaster Dr. Robert Hatcher intends to let the Scouts do an initial surface survey of an archaeological site on the island where Miskatonic University will be conducting a dig the following year. However as things go terribly wrong, what starts out as a treasure trove of merit badges turns into a week of horror from shocking revelations to discoveries that the island isn't quite so uninhabited as first believed, and in the end only one merit badge will count--Survival.

Howdy Folks! PaizoCon Dictator-Emeritus Timitius, here.

I am seeing several great games being proposed! This is GREAT. I want to play in all of these! However, what I am not seeing is these proposals taking that next step to becoming OFFICIAL. By my count right now...we have two. TWO.

We need more. LOTS more. Josh explained to me that each day is going to have upwards of 36 gaming slots. Of these, PFS scenario sessions will take up half. So....that's quite a lot of slots left open.

Sure, there will be Paizo staff run games in the mix, too, but not everyone can get into these. In fact, a lot won't. There are going to be 200+ gamers looking for a game each day. We just cannot have folks milling about, looking lost and bored. We need them to park their butts at YOUR table, playing YOUR game.

So, if you are a contributor, follow the examples of Adam and Greg, and submit a game or two to run at PaizoCon 2010. The fans know you, and they WANT the opportunity to play with you. I myself got to play some "Slumbering Tsar" preview action last year with Greg. It was so much fun! And, I also found myself sitting next to Lou Agresta and Sean Patrick Fannon as well! Bonus!

If you are a fan, PLEASE PLEASE submit your one-shot game here as well. You are needed! Convert an old D&D module to PFRPG...modify a module to run in 4-5 hours...heck, run some favorite, nostalgic game for your fellow nerds!

Bottom line here: Some of the most memorable times at the past two PaizoCons have been at the tables run by your fellow Paizo fans. You are playing with a pool of people that you just won't find anywhere else, during a weekend that is jam-packed with awesome.

So, heed the call of Cookie Mistress Lilith: fill up that lottery with more Paizo fan-run games!

Event Title: "The Harrowing"
Description: The ever-shifting territory known as the Worldwound spews forth countless demons, but the times a powerful entity of the innumerable layers of Abyss arrives on the Material plane can be counted on one hand. When a high-ranking member of the Iomedean faith goes missing with tell-tale signs of demonic attack, the adventurers are drawn into an extraplanar power struggle, the aftermath having unknown and far-reaching effects on Golarion as they know it.
Slot: Friday afternoon, Friday evening
Min/Max Players: 2 - 4
Event Category: Game
Game System: Pathfinder RPG
Materials Provided: Y (pregens will be available, but I will accept characters with prior approval)
Game Rating: PG-13/R
Experience Needed: Some
Prizes Awarded: Maybe
Additional Notes:
An adaptation of Monte Cook's "The Harrowing" from Dungeon #84. This is for four 15th level characters.

Liz, would it be okay to propose a game for Sunday afternoon or evening? I am running Society Scenarios all weekend, and therefore don't know if I would have time to run anything during the con. However, as I posted elsewhere, when Paizocon ended I wasn't ready to stop yet. I'm sure I wasn't the only one! Therefore, I would happily run a game or two later on Sunday if there is interest.

j.

I think the convention ends officially Sunday afternoon, so there wouldn't be an official slot with tickets or anything. If you want to run something unofficially after hours, that's fine, but I would wait to announce it until the during-hours games are over.

Edit: What? Only thirteen events so far? Come on people, I know you can bring the gaming to PaizoCon! Do eet! The power of the Golem compels you!

Ouch. If there's only 13 attendee-run games this year, many of you are going to be very, very disappointed when it comes time to lottery for seats. Let's see some more action!

As for Sunday night gaming, we won't have official rooms for you, but nothing stops you from gaming in the lobby, the lounge, or your hotel rooms. :-) I just can't put those locations on a schedule or put them in the lottery. Perhaps a Sunday night events thread ...

I will certainly run something but haven't had a chance to put anything together yet. What's the deadline for getting on the official calendar? I ran a Star Wars game last year but didn't get it 'registered' for the list.
M

Is anyone interested in a Wheel of Time adventure? I have modified the D20 system based off of the book published by Wizards of the Coast in which spells are more like the weaves mentioned in the stories written by Robert Jordan. I can whip up more specifics by this weekend if there is demand for this non PFRPG kind of event. The game itself would have to be Saturday or Sunday since I can't take enough time off to make it to Seattle by Friday in sufficent time to register for a room and be prepared (unless I drove all night on Thursday).

Propose it and I bet you get 4-to-6 people signed up for it. :-)

And, obviously, Adam and Greg have managed to figure it out, but the answer eludes me:

How do I sign up to run a game? I can't find any such link from the PaizoCon link on the home page. Can someone provide a direct link, or a description for the navigation-challenged?

Once you propose your game in this thread, using the template of information requested, the powers-that-be at Paizo (mainly, Josh, I believe) will ensure your game gets listed in the lottery sign-up they'll be using later to assign players to events/seminars/games overall.

Hm. OK, so does that mean mine's already in the list? The post I was responding to mentioned Adam's and Greg's games, but said those were the only two. What makes those different than the proposals by Lilith, Crystal Frasier, N'Wah, Me, and Jeremy Walker, all of which were also posted in the same format in the same thread?

You're in the list, but I need to know your preferred time slot from the given available slots - see this post here. Pretty much the same, but preferred time slot is necessary!

While we're at it, Crystal, Ashton, Jeremy and Russ need to give me the same information. :)

Pat,

Your info is almost all there, but there is a very important extra bit we need to get you into the line-up (and this goes for everyone else who posted early):

Slot: Give me TWO times you'd like to run your game, first choice and an alternate. Available slots are:
Friday June 18th: Afternoon, Evening
Saturday June 19th: Morning, Afternoon, Evening (this slot coincides with the Banquet)
Sunday June 20th: Morning

Other items you could provide in addition to your previous post:

Event Category: Game? Contest? Seminar? Etc!

GM Name If I don't already have it. (And you probably want to convey a REAL name, because those are kind of default when you are not online ;-))

Prizes Awarded: Y/N?

Edit: NINJAED BY LILITH HERSELF! Missed it by that much....
