A Question of Investiture and Fort Rannick (Spoilers)

Rise of the Runelords

Good Morning All :)

My intrepid players have just about finished The Hook Mountain Massacre, and have decided that one of their group will take over responsibility of Fort Rannick from the Black Arrows. They decided unanimously that they didn't want the Hellknights setting up shop here, so it was a pretty easy decision for them ;)

Something that was inferred but never spelled out was whether or not those people would be invested with a minor noble rank by Lord Mayor Grobaras and the Hall of Ushers. The loss of the Foxgloves in The Skinsaw Murders does leave an opening in their ranks, so to speak, so I was going to sweeten the deal of taking over the Fort with an investiture.

The rank of Baron or Baroness would make sense. As the Foxgloves were barons (if memory serves), it would make sense to fill their specific rank in the Magnimar hierarchy.

However, the fact that Fort Rannick was built specifically to pacify the Hook Mountain / Turtleback Ferry region really makes this area seem more like a Border March to me, and would confer the rank of Marquess or Marchioness in such a case. The higher risks justify the higher rank, I think.

Has anyone else gone this route, and if so, did you just knight the PCs or actually grant them stewardship of the Turtleback region and give them a higher title?

As always, thanks in advance for your thoughts!

In our group, we saved it, payed to have it rebuilt, and added magic balistas. The Fort would have beens ours if more than one person from the group that saved Fort Rannic had survived the AP. We were the Lords of Fort Rannic, along with the Black Arrow's leader.

We killed giants, we saved people, they made us Lords. Worked out pretty well I think.

In my campaign, I had the Lord Mayor of Magnimar ennoble the party's fighter (who had a family connection to the Order of the Nail, as her father had been an armiger with them) as 'Lady Rannick' and assign the territory to her. Which required negotiating with the fey in the Shimmerglens, the gnomes in the forest behind the Shimmerglens, a couple of towns, and a lot of rebuilding at the Fort.

The offer wasn't extended to the rest of the party, because, realistically, they were either unsuitable or wouldn't take it. The rogue was engaged to Ameiko Kaijitsu and didn't see a need to add a second noble title to that relationship. The sorcerer flatly refused, not wanting to be tied down. The cleric passed on it, saying it would interfere with her duties as a priestess. So.... easy choice.

I just gave my guys military titles. The previous commander of the fort wasn't a noble, as far as I know.

Thanks folks! :)
