Oracle Armor

The Exchange

The Oracle's various Mysteries each have a revelation that gives an armor bonus for a limited amount of time per day. Now, as it does say "armor bonus", that means that it does not stack with any armor you might already be wearing, and this is a class that is proficient with medium armor. Doesn't that seem kind of redundant?

This brings me to my second point- The Air mystery still gives a shield-wielding class the spell Shield, which makes this mystery very unattractive when compared to the other ones available. An arcane spellcaster will always appreciate shield, because that is +4 to armor class that they otherwise couldn't get. An oracle will only get a +2 bonus over her heavy shield at first level, and even less if they start getting magic enhancements on it or take shield specialization. I still vote that the 1st level bonus spell for the Wind mystery should be Unseen Servant. It fits the flavor, gives access to an otherwise inaccessible spell, and isn't made moot by the proficiencies the class gets.

- Shield is force effect and thus works agains incorporeals.

- with shield you can cast spells with your one hand and swing a weapon in the other.
- with shield spell you can go the TWF route or use a THW.

Agree with that the +4 armor bonus is a problem. I have adressed this in another thread.

If you go with the Wind mystery, you only get proficiency with Simple weapons, making your THW choices pretty slim, and a TWFer gets the double whammy of only simple weapons plus a 3/4 BAB and no bonus dice per attack (like the rogue's sneak attack). That's not to even mention that I've never seen a DM that stopped a cleric from casting spells when they're going mace-and-shield, although that's mostly just hand-waved in our games so that may not be a valid point. I just don't see why they should get a less useful spell than the other mysteries. No other shield-wielding class ever got the Shield spell, just like armor wearing classes don't have Mage Armor on their spell list.

The Summoner gets mage armor, but can wear armor. Same with PHB2's Beguilers.

Multi class or use a feat

edit: Divine favor, Divine Power and Righteous Might works fine.

We use it in our game and judging from feadback on the Messageboards we are not alone.

Well bards had mage armor in 3.0.

Agree the spell list is weak, but I like shield as a bonus spell. Or should I say: I love it. Great vs. incorporeals.

Check out my thread on the subject of their weak spells.

For what it's worth, I strongly suspect that the summoner is expected to be casting that mage armor on his eidolon rather that on himself.
