Oracle - Heavens mystery

First off, I love "mystery" as the name for this class ability rather than focus!

Second, for the Awesome Display revelation, when you reduce HD for target creatures when using an illusion (pattern), does that apply to:

1. ALL targets collectively (so you cast rainbow pattern on a bunch of ogres and you reduce their total HD by 4 cuz you have an 18 CHA); or,

2. EACH target individually (so with the same spell and stats above you'd treat each ogre as the 1 HD minimum)?

Coat of Many Stars grants you a +4 armor bonus, but armor bonus does not stack with armor bonus so there seem to be something wrong.

Interstellar Void allows a save. But what is the DC?

The DC are absent in other Mysteries to.

I think *insight* bonus would be cool for this Mystery... but as with other Mysteries, it's likely meant for non-armored Oracles, and not on top of any armor worn (think of it as Oracle's own 'Mage Armor').

It just seems odd giving them medium armor and then expect them not to use armor. I hope for an errata.

It's a bit odd, especially when the bonus is so low, but if the bonus had been +6 it would make much more sense for those that don't want ACP. Now, with only +4, even a +1 studded leather fixes that issue.

The final revelation for the Heavens mystery is somewhat mystifying to me. (Ooh, the alliteration!) What is a "star child"?

As far as I can tell, it's not from the Bestiary. Is it from one of the adventure paths? Or is it just a poetic way of saying "your character is reincarnated, so use the Reincarnate table from the PFCR"?

Another question: the Guiding Star revelation refers to being able to see a particular star. What rules are in place to adjudicate this? Or is it left up to the DM?

+1 on approving the change from "focus" to "mystery"! :)

And I do like the new mysteries in general, particularly the non-Lovecraftian take on stellar phenomena. Don't get me wrong, I like the Lovecraftian mythos, but I sometimes get tired of the "everything from the stars is evil/mad" cliché.

Keep in mind that the armor revelations scale. Coat of stars starts at +4 armor, goes to +6 at level 7, +8 at level 11, +10 at level 15, and +12 at level 19. +12 armor to AC is better than any medium armor. It also grants DR 5/slashing, which isn't great, but it IS a DR type that can't be overcome by just any magical weapon (unlike /material or /alignment).

Good points.

Oh, and the save DCs for revelations are going to be 10 + half Oracle level + Charisma. It's not stated, but that's the general formula (10 + half HD/class level + appropriate stat) for Ex, Su, and Sp abilities.

EDIT: And I also LOVE this new mystery. I've always had a soft spot for astrology as an actual magical force in games (I loved the NPC in Final Fantasy Tactics that used astrology-based attacks), and this mystery hits that dead-on without involving any Lovecraftian or overly-scientific themes, which is perfect. However, I don't like the name "interstellar void"; sounds just a little too technical.

Yeah, me too! I love that we now have an "astrologer" class! :)

I also agree that some of the ability names (concerning some other mysteries as well) are a bit, er, "wonky". For example, I might prefer 'Void Beyond the Tapestry' or 'Void Between the Stars'. However, these are just minor issues for me...

The bonus as an armour bonus was mentioned in the first playtest as they used the armour bonus and formula for all types of oracles with slight differances (Wind and Water for example in the first play test).

On the good side they lengthened the time that it works for to 10 min per level from the previous 1 min per level. This at least puts it more in the running as a substitute for regular armour that could be purchased.

The increase to allow Oracles wear medium armour does counter the new gain in time on the ability. There is a savings in encombrance and speed to go with the ability but that depends on the GM and game on how strictly those rules are monitored and enforced in combat and tactical play.

I might suggest that the ability gains a bit of a bump. For example, in the case of Wind the Electricity Resistance (Spark Skin) ability might be folded into the armour Air Barrier.

When you consider that a spontaneous caster can have the spell, Resist Energies, giving 10 points of protection from level 5 forward and be tunable to whatever type of energy attack the caster wants, Spark Skin is almost a no pick. Spark Skin is better as a flavour advantage of the Air Barrier as one extra bonus it provides.

Of course when you put the two together, someone would compain of the existing name, likely requiring a new name for the combined power like 'Wind Soul' or 'Cloud Defence'.

It is stated at the beginning of the Mysteries section right after the heading Mysteries.

Oh, My Bad. Thanks.

An observation I noticed with the coat of stars revelation it works great with an archer build. You get a scaling to the Ac and you add max dex bonus whereas with Medium armor the most you can add is a +4 if your wearing Hide armor and have an 18 dexterity, and you lose speed. I built a level 1 Human Heavens Oracle put the ability boost in dexterity giving him an 18( rolled a 16 for dex) dumped strength giving him a 10. I outfitted him in a chainshirt and blew the extra human feat on Martial Weapon Proficiency Longbow. It comes out the same if I made an elf oracle. Anyway since you get 10 minutes of coat of stars at level one I figured might as well hold off on that and use a chainshirt for the time being. I see it really benefiting the oracle after level 4 since he can use the revelation for encounters if lets say the party faces on average 4 encounters a day. And he can have a spare chainshirt in emergency situations

Yes, And Wind is even better. I will post some thought on that here.

Probably tomorrow or this weakened. But just let me say this,
They get the ability to fly and the get shield as a bonus spell and they get Air Barrier and Divine power or divine favour works just fine for archers.
