So my Alchemist is imprisoned and naked...

Round 3: Alchemist and Inquisitor

I was wondering how the Alchemist would fare if he was taken away from his equipment. Could he use stuff like moss and water to make his extracts or bombs? I am not sure if I'm reading the rules right...

naked alchemists make extracts in a way I can't post about without violating the site's decency guidelines.

LOL

I was being serious actually...

Bombs and Extracts use up materials who's cost are insignificant but comparable to a spell component pouch. As per the Alchemy section. If you're naked and in a cell I don't think you can get a hold of those components.

A creative DM might let you use a Craft (alchemy) check to try and find what you need in your cell for like a single extract or bomb.

If you're naked and in a cell I'd say your best bit will be Disable Device! with a -4 penalty for using your hands. That's really all you can do. You're not even very good at bluffing or using diplomacy to get out.

Heh. The first thing I thought when I saw the title was "if the alchemist is female, someone's going to take this and run with it."

Anyway ....

I think if your alchemist is naked and in a cell, you're pretty much reduced to the level of any other human in similar circumstances. That is, your only chance to get out is by physically forcing your way out from the dungeon, persuading or bushwhacking a guard, or being rescued. I don't think your alchemist stuff would do much for you, in short.

The alchemist is rather hilarious. It REQUIRES equipment for all of it's abilities...but can't really utilize MAGIC equipment that much.

...how is that hilarious ?

Sadly, some people prefer to laugh at, rather than with.

but wait - doesn't it say that part of the process involves magical essence and what naught? As a Killer DM, I would still reward the player for wanting to make and Alchemy check (or anything really) that allows him to scrap lichen off the walls, spit in his hand and produce enough bang to get a roll against the lock. Or something. This is about collaborative story telling, not how can I screw the player. The question is, what do you want the character to do - stay caught or get loose?

...and what about the mold on the bread and cheese!

edit: I found the quote:

When an alchemist creates an extract or bomb, he infuses the concoction with a tiny fraction of his own magical power

True .... but to be fair, pretty much the same can be said for the fighter and/or the rogue, I suppose ....

Perhaps the same could be said of all martial classes!

+1 to this. In order for me to let the alchemist McGuyver his way out there'd have to be some house-rule resource like Action Points, Fate Points, etc. that he'd have to burn. Otherwise, I'd lose all credibility as a (sometimes) RBDM.

I believe so long as the alchemist can procure a qtip and a roll of duct tape he should be able to cobble together the rest.

Indeed, but yoda8myhead does have a point.

I was disappointed too. Now if we were talking a pretty female elf alchemist..

This thread has me hearing the MacGuyver opening theme...that and I can't help of visualize this restrained Alchemist as Richard Dean Anderson (mullet and all).

I agree partially with the post above, mentioning action and fate points. Those are a good mechanic to have for moments like these. Even if you don't have such a rule in place though, considering that the Alchemist [i]might]i] be able to find some of the 'readily available' reagents for his bombs in the cell...

I would (using Fate/Action Points or not) set up a series of skill checks for him/her. First, Perception, to examine the room very carefully (taking 10 or 20 might be fine...if the guards or torturer isn't coming heheh), to see if he/she can notice any of the necessary reagents to crack/melt the lock. Basically, acids or bombs or other explosives will do.

For example: And note that these descriptions might be disgusting to some people, so a Spoiler tag...

Spoiler:

For making Black Powder
1) Decomposing urine/dung is a good source of potassium nitrate.
2) Charcoal may be able to be obtained in a dungeon...bribing a guard, perhaps. But its availability might depend on what the guards might use to keep themselves warm in a damp, cold dungeon.
3) Sulfur. In a coastal or volcanic region, sulfur crystals might be found simply by prying out some stones in the wall or floor. If the cell is rough stone, a simple scraping might suffice.
Acids, with Extract magic, Sulfuric Acid is possible.
1) Iron Pyrite
2) Water
3) Magic/Extract ability to catalyze the materials.

I think i would, in the realm of a possible houserule, beg my DM to allow me to take eschew materials were I ever to create an Alchemist.

Not so much for the bottles but for the annoying little scenarios such as these.
Rather than "you don't need materials" I would refluff it for my character to be "you know how to use on hand, rather than to use the special materials common to your craft" or some such.

That would make for a good feat I think.

And extracts doesn't really require bottles, right? You could probably use a patch of moss to hold the magic if you needed to.

But enough talk! HAve...er...

...Weeell, it doesn't exactly fit, because fighters and rogues can still buy magic WEAPONS to improve their damage and sneak attacking abilities. Rogues can get items to let them deal with traps better.

You don't need to do all that. Just seduce her and have her help you out ;p

yeah but then she becomes baggage, and what if she betrays you later?
