Right but at the same time that you built your constrictor snake you were forgoing a lot of abilities in order to build it "like the snake" whereas if you had just built it "like an eidelon" it would have been better by leaps and bounds. Also can you link to the thread...

Well I built a Wolf like Eidolon at lvl 1. Quadruped form, trip, improved natural armor, and claws. Same AC, similar bite damage. I get extra claw attacks and a better CMB/D. The wolf gets a number of useful skills like scent and perception. I get darkvision, it gets low light.

It was good but didn't really steal any shows. Is it going to get far better than an AniCom after a few more levels? Absolutely. Could a Druid kick my Summoners butt? I'd bet yes.

answering the last question, this summoner isn't at all wha I envisioned. I pictured someone who would call an amy. They might not have been the most powerful of creatures, but they could overwhelm you in combat. At the same time, he would have an arsenal of summons to perform tasks, and dozens of creatures at his beck and call. Before the SM nerf, I would have played the class without the eidolon and been happy.

I would also like to see it have summons that don't necessarily follow your command. Just because you can summon a demon doesn't mean it will obey you. Lower level versions of things like Gate, where you try to permanently bind an imp to your will.

The summoner "summons" once a day, a set of powers for himself. These powers work in every other way like the Eidolon. Consider him a rider if you will (though internally).

Thoughts?

I have a sneaking suspision you've just described the alchemist.

It really boils down to this. If you enjoyed programs like Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh! and wanted to play a character like that than this is the class that's been served up for you on a platter.

Personal opinion clearly but, This is Pathfinder, not Pokemon. Your character should be the main focus in your playing. It sounds like this is more a Pokemon class than a Summoner now.

Do this mean the monk becomes a streetfighter because some one wants to make a character from Streetfighter? Is the rogue a ninja because some one liked the ninja from G.I. Joe? Is the wizard Harry Potter?

You can make all the classes sound like something else.

I also fixed the spelling for 'pokemon.' There is no "a" in the word at all.

I apologize Dragon I clearly misrepresented myself. My concern is that the summoner class is now being taken for the Elidolon only. In other words it makes the Summoner look like the only reason he is even a class is to justify the existence of a custom creature that people play. So if you want to play a Pokemon you just take a summoner. Make him non-existent really and play your Pokemon.

Not that i have anything against people creating ideas from other sources, I myself have done that a lot. But if you're going to do that it would just be easier to make Elidolon the class, not Summoner.

Now I understand what your saying Dags, sorry for the smartass retort I gave up-thread.

I 'guess' some people might play it that way, but the way most people I know (and the way I'm playing it) is as a partnership.

The Eidolon isn't replacing the main character, it's part of the main character in an emotional sense.

The pokemon trainer and his pokemon, the Digidestined and his Digimon, the Monster Ranger and his Monster, emulating the newer show Dinosaur King, whatever.

You get what I'm saying Dags? And that's just one possible way to play it. You could play the Eidolon as the leader and the summoner as a humble servant who calls it to the material plain and serves his master while he's there, or you could play the summoner as a slave-binder who forces the thing there, Or someone who conjures it out of astral goop.

In my oppinion, the huge variety of possible character concepts is the appeal to the Summoner class, you can spin it sooooooo many different ways.

I totally agree, and i did not take offense no worries. I just see the class without its SLA abilities as SO focused around the elidolon that it takes a lot of the role play flavor away from the summoner. Due to previous experiences in role playing with summoners, It puts a taste in my mouth that this class is now an Elidolon with a PC companion.
