Going further with prestige classes?

Advanced Player's Guide Playtest General Discussion

I personally like what PF did with the prestige classes, including the caps they get at 10th level.
But what if the character wants to go on with it? In 3.5, it was shown that higher levels were possible in the Epic level handbook.

Some of the classes (spellcasting classes in particular) would work fine going to 20th level. You get your capstone at 15-17th level, but you've got more levels to go. Why not keep going? What say ye?

I favor the theory that characters can extend a prestige class past 10th level. It's just a matter of extrapolating the benefits, and perhaps making up some more.

Well, they have said there will be an Epic Level Pathfinder book at some point. I wonder if this topic will be a part of that

Epic level books typically cover level 20+. This means that you still dip away from your PrC for a few levels before being able to go back into it again.

They probably should have just made them 13 (or so) level classes to begin with. Especially the formulaic ones (Eldrich Knight). But, no use crying over spilled milk. If your campaign gets to those levels, perhaps your DM will just agree that the extension makes sense.

Yep, seeing as how prestige classes all have prerequisites to meet, I could see them extending to 12-15 levels at the most under the current system. The determining factor would be the total number of levels in the base class or classes that are needed to meet the requirements for a prestige class. For example, a prestige class could be designed for 15 levels if it was possible that in 5 levels of base classes you could meet the requirements. And if you happen to take 8 base class levels to do that instead of 5, then you would only be able to get 12 levels of the prestige class. This would make planning out your future levels more important.

I like the idea of 5 and 10 level prestige classes. I don't think they need to be extended.

What I WOULD like to see is some synergy between the 5 level classes and the 10 level classes though. Meaning there are some that complement eachother without actually needing both.

I lke 3 and 5 level PrCs. Nice little flavor dips are cool to me

There is room for 10 level PrCs, one's that are near base class like the assassin for example or loremaster

I miss the ones from 3.5 that gave a character radically different abilities from what they could achieve as the base class -- often moving down a more specialized, rather than a more general, path. The possibility of playing a master abjurer, and then moving into Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil, provided the potential playability of a wizard who actually was substantially better at dispelling an enemy's magicks than his peers -- and whose magicks were, in turn, harder to dispel. Despite the abundance of interesting feats and the expanded arcane classes, I don't really see anything similar to that in the rules at present (particularly given that while the spell focus (abjuration) chain increases save DCs, which very few abjuration spells have, it doesn't increase dispel checks).

I agree. One of the best things behind PrCs is specialzation like that. Greater but more focused and specialized powers for flavor.

I always thought some PrCs should be 14-15 levels.

That way a character could be mostly that class more than any other.
