Summoner spell list and potions / wands

Round 2: Summoner and Witch

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2009 Top 4

Ran a quick test last night with a summoner who had the Brew Potion feat. The summoner spell list opens the door to potions of Improved Invisibility and Fire Shield, a pair of spells I find a little too powerful for common use by non-spellcasters.

Additionally, the 3.5 haste is pretty balanced at 3rd level, where potions cost 750 and wands cost 11,250, and there are tons of great spells to choose from. As a 2nd level spell, with 400gp potions and 6000gp wands, and a class who has summoned critters running all over the place, haste is now in the "too good for its level" category.

YMMV, of course.

Great points.

Keep in mind that Summoners (as all the APG classes) are intended to be not as common as the core book classes. It'd be perfectly reasonable to say "no, there are no Summoners anywhere near here, you can't buy Summoner potions at the local apothecary". Similar to the 3.5 "No, there are no Disciples of Thrym anywhere in a 2,000 mile radius, you cannot buy a wand of summon giants here" (summon giants is an 8th level spell that summons multiple fiendish giants, but it's a 4th level spell on the Disciple of Thrym prestige class's class-specific spellcasting list).

Now, a Summoner PC with the appropriate feats, I don't see the problem with that.

nothing says their use has to be common. Just because it can exist doesnt mean it must in your world. If you dont want summoner spells in potions, dont make them available in game. Wizards and clerics brew potions, in your world summoners are busy studying outsiders.

In terms of a summoner in the party brewing potions, this really isnt any more powerful then what the summoner can already do. If he gives out potions, first of all he has spent a feat on teamwork, and second of all the non casters need to take an action each to drink the potion, with haste the summoner could have casted it on a whole bunch of them with only one action. Its actually less effective then the summoner just casting the spell (though more effecient in terms of daily resources)
