Is the art available?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

As a person who runs a lot of online games via MapTool, I really get a lot of use out of the art in the books. WotC used to make all of their art free on their website. Is this something that Paizo may be able to do? I love the art and would like to use it in my online Pathfinder games, but I hate smashing my books in my scanner. Just bringing it up as this would be a boon to those of us who play online.

This is a good idea, but if Paizo decides they don't want to, might I suggest purchasing the PDFs (at $10 per book, they're pretty cheap!) and screen capturing the PDF images?

No need really to use print screen - Your average PDF viewer has an image extraction tool.

Also, look through the Blog. There is a lot of art that has been posted there over time.

And when using Acrobat, I've found it best to save the images as TIFF, as the background stays white that way instead of black with jagged edges around the subject when you save as JPEG

I'm also told the art posted on the Blog is all public domain, so you can use those images without concern.

Not quite. The art is usable under the Community Use License, but it is not Public Domain. Paizo have granted a conditional use license but retain ownership of the artwork. It's similar to how Creative Commons licenses work.

OK, that makes sense.

also you can check the wiki at www.pathfinderwiki.com and click on gallery. We have all of the art from the blog in an easier to search format

That said, the gallery portal on the wiki could be improved and we welcome suggestions regarding how to make it more user-friendly. I have recently gone through every blog post from April 2007 through December 2008 and can verify that all images we can legally use on the wiki are there in that period. I should get through the 2009 blogs in the next week or so.

Some things I think would really make the gallery more user friendly are. More options to view the gallery, break it up by. Cover arts for paizo products, cover art for other products, maps(yeah you have this one), monster art, character art(for the last too I am only talking the clean art from the blog ala Iconics as a example), things like that.

As it stands now unless you know who the artist is, what book it is from or what the subject is. It is kinda hard to find. I mean things like man I remember this cool monster pic from the blog a few months ago. Trying to find that currently is fairly hard.

Anyways just giving feedback, as I have started to go to the site more often of late and just noticed that.

I appreciate the feedback and think you offer some good suggestions. I will look into the best way to incorporate it into the gallery going forward.

What I would like is just to be able to just download the art by month or even better year, with an option to have it segmented by artist.

Most of the art (if not all of it) is useful, and going through the entire wiki and right clicking takes FOR EV ER.

Well said. Here's the Community Use Policy.
