Caster Level question... HELP!

Ok, I'm a little confused. When something(item, feat, ability) boosts your "Caster Level", such as the Practiced Spellcaster feat, do you gain new spells as if you were actually that high of a level? I never thought so, but I'm seeing more and more builds on other forums where people simply take that feat and can suddenly use more, higher level spells.

At my table, boosts to Caster Level ONLY increased numeric variables of existing spells( i.e. Fireball dice damage), checks versus SR, etc.

So, which is it? I don't have my books handy but I'm thinking up a build for a game tonight.

No, Practiced Spellcaster does NOT give you access to new spells known/per day or anything like that. It's one of my biggest pet peeves personally when people do that, too.

The only thing that increases is the damage and potency of your spells. (Less likely to be dispelled/countered, more damage die, etc.)

+1.

Mostly it is used to add damage dice to spells or to keep caster level checks in a usable region when multiclassing with a caster and not wanting to become totally useless at higher levels.

That's what I thought it was... I've seen players in other games try it and always felt like I was missing something.

In exstend of that question, i would like to ask, does all "+X caster level" bonusses stack? A friend of mine told me that i only aply the highest bonus to my caster level, but what about prestige classes that grants a +1 caster level every level? same bonus, same source, does that meen they dont stack?

Pathfinder Maps, Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Maps, Starfinder Roleplaying Game, Starfinder Society Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

Prestige classes use slightly different language, and for a reason. Those classes actually do grant you extra spells per day (and spells known, if you are a spontaneous caster) as well as increasing your effective caster level.

But in general, the bonuses to caster level do stack, up to specified limits (such as the one given for the Practiced Spellcaster feat). These bonuses are untyped and come from different sources, after all.

+1

If a prestige class lists "+1 level of existing ... spellcasting class" under the Spells per Day column, then it does indeed stack.

But terms like "+x caster level" and "spell power +1" simply refer to level-dependent spell variables (e.g., range, how many damage dice) and caster level checks (e.g., your character's chances of penetrating SR, a spell's defence against another spellcaster's Dispel Magic). It does not allow your character to cast higher-level spells or in general spells more frequently per day.
