Jarl Khurok's Keep


Shackled City Adventure Path


Has anyone used this location as a side adventure?
One of my players invariable goes for the "build a castle [and then take over the world at the end of the campaign]" shtick with about every character. I have decided to allow them to "find" a suitable place for a base outsider of Cauldron; unless they try to dig an entrance back to the Malachite Fortress or Jzaldrine, I thought this abandoned keep might be a cool side quest.

Obviously I'm going to make them work for their base, but I'm having trouble figuing out the currant tenants; so far I decided against frost giants, devils, demons...

I just wanted to see what other people did.

I used the Dungeon Adventure "Headless" and had it take place in Jarl Khurok's Keep. The giants had been displaced by the main antagonist of that module, and the work she was carrying out on the "Deathgate" was later stolen by the Cagewrights to build the Tree of Shackled Souls.

It's a level 11 adventure and is really fun. It also fits perfectly into the region since the main location is a snowy frost giant keep high in the mountains. The main antagonist is a woman who is attempting to bring Orcus into the world. To do this she is basically trying to build a massive artifact using the souls of people she is beheading. However, she is also completely insane and basically killed all her followers to use their heads and is now dependent on similicra to do the dirty work for her.

Cool, I might have to check this out; I'm replacing a certain backstory villain with Orcus for post campaign epic awesomeness, and this might be a good foreshadowing device (I'm converting a few 1st and 2nd edition adventures into side adventures and epic-level quests for my campaign).

Right now they are on their first side adventure that I've worked into the plot (The Gauntlet); I plan to run Tomb of Horrors and the Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh later, and post SCAP The Return to the Tomb of Horrors and then the Bloodstone saga (using the Warpath rules I designed, which will be a nice way to balance their epic craziness at that point since they will have to use smart tactics to help reduce casualties on their side).
