Magical Lineage trait

Rules Questions

it reads

Quote:

Magical Lineage: One of your parents was a gifted

spellcaster who not only used metamagic often, but developed
many magical items and perhaps even a new
spell or two—and you have inherited a fragment of this
greatness. Pick one spell when you choose this trait.
When you apply metamagic feats to this spell, treat its
actual level as 1 lower for determining the spell’s final
adjusted level.

The way it reads you can pick ANY spell even one that you can't currently cast? Is that a correct interpretation of this trail?

I guess you COULD pick any spell, but it wouldn't make sense, because you can only apply a metamagic feat to spell that you can cast.

If you don't mind waiting for it, then waiting a few more levels to be able to use metamagic with it, I don't see why not. It may be something your character doesn't know he can do, yet.

It's probably best if you're creating a character at mid to high levels.

If I was creating a 7th level evoker, taking this trait and applying it to fireball would work quite well. At levels 7-8, you can cast Empowered Fireballs with a 4th level slot. At levels 11-12, you can quicken it as a 6th level spell (which works best if you know that you have one fight that day and need to nova).

Is there anything that says I can't apply this trait to the same spell multiple times?

anyone?

You would only be able to gain this trait once.

When selecting traits, you may not select more than one from the same list of traits.

Even if your DM allowed you to choose it twice, it would not stack as it is a "trait bonus"
