Me too! That's why I'm not wearing any.

Neat delivery there. And a good point. We make names and labels for things, and believe that this means we understand them and have power over them. But it's rarely the case.

Driz'zt was awesome until he (and the drow race, to an extent) was whored out for every possible consumer dollar.

If you don't like him, maybe it's because you can't remember what he was like, 800 products ago.

I've personally always loved sub-races, bloodlines, and things of that nature. ;)

I can. I feel a ramble coming on...

When I heard about the early Drizzt books, I was determined to hate them. Why should I care about a society of evil backstabbers? I started to read Homeland just so that I could say, with authority, that the Dark Elf books stink.

And for the first chapter or two, I did say that. None of the characters were remotely sympathetic. And Zaknafein looked no better than anyone else.

And then we find out that Zaknafein is... trapped. Trapped in a culture that goes against his whole nature. He delivered an impassioned monologue. "Menzoberranzan, what hell are you?!"

Holy expletive. What a character! I had to re-read the book up to that point, or at least, the scenes with Zaknafein in them, before I went on.

And THEN what happens to Zak? Despite being imprisoned in this society, he rebels just enough to pass on his beliefs to his son. And his son goes on to do great things!

Dang! What a story! I ate up the first six Drizzt books.

Then I read the next 2 1/2 Drizzt books, which focused far too much on drow society. With Zak dead, there was no one left in Menzoberranzan for me to care about. We just keep hearing about different factions of drow plotting against each other. Since they're all evil, why should we care who wins? "Gee, this could be the end of all Menzoberranzan society." Good! Let them all kill each other already! It's a wonder they didn't achieve that long ago, anyway.

That's why *I* quit. Obviously, others will feel different.

(BTW, most of my "Drizzt clone" characters were goblins.)

Liberty's Edge

I played a Drizzt clone once....

Except he wasn't all brooding and emo. Or particularly Good. And didn't use scimitars. No figurine that turned into an animal nor any animal companion. And only vaguely a drow, too ('twas the DM's homebrew setting equivalent with the same stats, but different culture).

Okay, he was a ranger and he dual-wielded (which was bog-standard for 2E rangers).

But he was a drow-ish ranger that dual-wielded! Drizzt clone, right? Right?

I played drow before they were cool! When they first appeared in Unearthed Arcana in first edition and I read that they had no level restriction in wizard I was in love. Finally a race that could be something other than a rogue beyond level 15! Though being a ranger was pretty sweet too.
