Liberty's Edge

I figured since the playtest ones were closed we could add ones we thought of here.

Charge Breaker
Requirement: be charged by an enemy 15 times
Benefit: Whenever you are charged by an enemy you gain a free action against that character.

Improved Charge Breaker
Requirement: Charge breaker, Be charged by an enemy 30 times.
Benefit: Whenever you are charged by an enemy you gain an action against that character. Either a move action or attack action.

Greater Charge Breaker
Requirement: Charge breaker, imp. charge breaker, and be charged by enemies 45 times.
Benefit: Whenever you are charged by an enemy you gain a full-round action against that character. You also gain the benefit of your weapon being set for a charge even if it was not set for a charge.

While this is an interesting idea, I'm not sure how I feel about them. Being charged it oddly specific, which I suppose is the point, but building a character based on the hope that you'll be charged does two things: 1) Is only useful at 1 point during a combat scenario (when you're charged), and 2) Requires the DM to continually throw charging enemies at you, or nullify your character concept. 3 feats is a pretty decent investment.

If you're keen on these sorts of feats, you might also check out the Unearthed Arcana's spelltouched feats, which are pretty much the same thing. But to build on what you're doing here, these are my suggestions:

  • Your requirements are too high, and likely mean that a character won't achieve the prerequisites in time for the feat to be "useful." I would modify them to simply have been successfully charged and hit by an enemy and then spend X nights practicing counter-charge techniques. By your description, these could also be achieved by your players running into each other.
  • Charge Breaker gives you a free action against the character? Free actions don't have limits- you have unlimited free actions, and very few things a character can do require a free action. I suggest changing this to a swift action, or better yet, read on:
  • These feats are very involved for a specific concept. I recommend powering them up- for instance, let Charge Breaker give the character an immediate standard action against the charger, and let Improved Charge Breaker (perhaps with a BAB requirement) give the character a full-round action against the charger.

I agree with the Unearthed Arcana suggestion.

And I agree that for the limitation the entry is too steep or vague. And the benefits should be higher. Pathfinder may have given more feats but they are still a commodity not to be traded lightly.

I'd do some thinking because I like these kinds of ideas. To me they may be limited, but they fill character concepts and niches pretty well anyway.

If you have a final version of these, perhaps you'd like to post them at the Pathfinder Database. :)

Given the requirements, and that they are named "Achievement" feats, I'm wondering if these are actually bonus feats. I mention this because the word "achievement" in the era of online gaming has the connotation of being something you get for free (i.e. like "unlocking" X-Box Live achievements).

If these feats are not freebies, then I'd suggest renaming the category to avoid cultural confusion.

If they are freebies, then I think you risk creating a Pandora's box. I could see players having their characters charging one another (or going out of their way to pick fights) just to rack up. The last thing we'd want in our pen & paper games is "grinding" right? ;)

No freakin' kidding.

I think that this is far too videogamish for a story-based game where characters might have military backstories (or even military "downtime" that the don't gain XP for) in which they may be charged by any number of people.

Characters keeping track of how many times they've been charged is a cute quirk, if that's what the player wants, but to expect a player (or worse, DM) to keep track of "statistics" like that would get old fast IMO.
