Hrm I don't remember 4e selling out before the release date ;)

Gully13 wrote:

Its ironic because I ordered through Paizo because my FLGS told me that it would probably show up early this way. Now it looks like my book wont make the 13th (I have 2-day shipping).

Oh well. Should have stuck with standard shipping.

I am right there with you, I have been "pending" for 10 days. I guess I shouldnt have selected the "faster" shipping for the PFRPG. I hope to have PDFs before gencon.

It turns out my brain was screwed up (not unusual) and I had the math wrong. I thought Wednesday was the 13th ... :(

I feel bad about casting aspersions, and since I can't delete the post I just wanted to try and make good and say that it went out today, and because I live in CA I suspect it will be here on time.

Sorry for being jumpy ... I much appreciate your dedication and of course the fine products you guys are making.

I met the postman at the box two days in a row. He thinks I'm weird. I'll take a deep breath and just read it when it gets here.

And damn is this thing huge! I'm pretty sure I can cave someone's skull in with it. It's like a Dire Book!

Mine still didn't come today. I could have driven to Seattle and picked it up, and been back in the time it is taking the post office to deliver it one way. :(

LOL Dire Book, does it come with spikes?

Mine arrived yesterday and I am not home. My daughter opened it and gloated over it to me over the phone.....drop in allowance for sure;)

Good news: I am going to be at gencon and will be getting a tier 1 gm copy ...yeah for me...:)

Damn you and your reliable deliveries!

Knowing my luck, though, my USPS mail delivery person would have dropped the book in a puddle, then folded the book in half to cram it into my mailbox.

Edit: Just read Andrew Betts' post. My delivery was "rescheduled" for the 13th. Sorry to hear yours is going to be a day late.

We must have the same mail lady.

Got mine, too!! YEAH!! My husband did not, tho.

I called my LGS (note the absense of the F) and they will have two in stock, assuming I get there before they sell out. I will be paying retail :( but I should have one in hand Thursday afternoon.

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

Folks,

I've been pretty busy for the past week for some reason, and haven't been able to chime in on as much of this as I'd like.... but I'd like to point out a few things.

First, I'd like to point out that our stated goal for this shipment is that "as many people as possible get it as close as possible to the release date." We always knew that some people would get it early, and some people would get it late. And of those, some of them will get it late because the shipper exceeds the quoted delivery time, and some of those will get it late because of a problem on our end. With this many orders, it's going to happen. But I feel we have knocked ourselves out to do a pretty good job for as many people as possible. I do really feel bad for the folks who won't get their book on time, but it's not because we did anything less than the best we could.

Yes, we ran into some bugs that caused some shipments to go out later than we wanted. Yes, international shipments as a whole took longer than we expected since we'd forgotten that, because every international package containing an RPG weighed over 4 pounds, they'd each need to have six separate copies of a individualized customs form signed and dated. If we'd recognized that, we'd have started the international shipments earlier. We do a lot of shipments, and, before now, this really didn't come up very often.

Those problems aside, we got most of the packages out within the correct range. I'd have liked to have hit 100%, but I'm satisfied that the process worked well for most people, and should we do it again, I think we can raise the efficiency.

I'm pretty well stunned, though, when I see blame and criticism for Paizo for somebody in New Jersey getting the book five days early. Anybody with any sense of American geography and the operation of postal systems in general would probably wager serious money that a non-Priority package from Washington state couldn't *possibly* hit Jersey in the time it took. I think most anyone would guess it would take at *least* five days, and indeed, our expected transit time for that package was even longer than that. The post office executing a frankly praiseworthy efficient delivery is not a sign of a failure on Paizo's part.

Reading some of this, I almost started to wish that we'd just skipped the massive effort that went into coding and then executing this staggered shipping process, because it would have been a whole hell of a lot easier to just start shipping this week for everyone and let them get there when they get there. It would have involved a lot fewer weekends from Gary, Jeff, Lisa and I, that's for sure. But we try to be the company that does a bit more for our customers, and so we did our best here. It wasn't perfect, but on the whole, I think I can feel good about it, because it was the right thing to do, and we did it with some level of success.

Hell yes the fact that you tried is such a good thing, don't feel bad and don't take it to heart. People say things on the web that they wouldn't say to someone's face (I know I am guilty of it), which is bad, so just enjoy all the positive stuff coming back.

Vic Wertz wrote:

Vic, Lisa, Gary, and all the rest. Honestly, I know that you all did your best. There is only so much that you can do when you are overwhelmed, but you all did a bang up job. Unfortunately, you can't please everyone.

Thanks again!

I think the effort is commendable. While its fine for people to point out where the system might have not worked as planned, I don't think there is much point to being upset because the unexpected happened (on the side of being more efficient).

Personally, I would hate for any of you to not feel that the personal effort that you expended was worth it, because, as you pointed out, you obviously did not need to go through the extra steps that you did to try and make this happen.

While I'm getting my copies from my FLGS (on pre-order), I appreciate the effort that went into this undertaking.

I think the post office was just giving me a birthday present (turned 25 yesterday ;) ).

As I've said before, transit time to NJ from ANYWHERE is always super fast, I think it's because there's so many postal flights coming into Newark NJ that stuff frequently gets 'bumped up' from overland/overseas delivery. I bought something off of eBay Germany that was supposed to ship by boat and got here in 4 days.

It's definitely not Paizo's fault though, and I commend you guys for all the effort you've been putting in. If I were living in the Seattle area I would've offered to come in and help you out cuz I like to suck up that way =p

Don't take it too hard Vic, even I was complaining that the PDF wasn't available right away, then got my hardcopy and quickly shut up. The fires will die out as people get their books and are just completely overcome by the joy of having it in their hands.

I honestly don't think you have anything to be sorry about. I have seen a few people outright angry. Don't mistake disappointed excitement as hate towards Paizo. Some of us were just eagerly waiting, had plans for the book, etc.

I, for one, am very happy you guys went the extra mile for this release. In fact, reading this makes me feel guilty that I felt any kind of disappointment at all, no matter that it derived from a core desire to make my gaming group happy and give them something to get excited about as well. Quite frankly, I feel like total crap now and I am not sure I can apologize enough if my comments did anything to make things worse.

I was never angry at Paizo and I never felt like the system was screwed up. I know others did and I hope those in the minority didn't get to you guys. It shouldn't because you just made a huge segment of gamers pleased that their favorite edition of D&D still thrives. Paizo single-handedly changed the face of the game industry. You proved that 3.5 is still viable. You took on the big dog and came out with a serious success. So do not focus on how a few people inappropriately expressed their anger and put aside whether those grievances were justified or not. Focus on the fact that PFRPG is going out the door, people love it, and the company has years of productivity to come.

You put a lot of blood into this product and it hurts to see people unhappy. I can say this, that won't stop. By putting out a rules system that competes for the hard earned money of gamers you can expect the irrational and the bitter to spout bile in even greater quantities. There is nothing you can do about that. Instead, focus on the wonder you have given your customer base. Revel in the fact you bring new gamers into the fold every day. When legitimate issues come up, fix them with the famous Paizo devotion to customer service. And when things seem to get too heated, just remember that the majority is often silent and they have spoken with their money.

I imagine you know all of this, but it actually kind of hurts me to see anyone at Paizo bothered by the events of the past week. Though that is completely understandable as you must be exhausted and physically numb. This company is the forefront of the gaming industry. You are nimble and you listen. You are reactive and proactive, a balancing act that is hard to maintain. Ultimately, you are the future of RPGs and it is your pioneering efforts that have changed the way we look at the game. You are in good company, standing tall with companies like Green Ronin and Malhavoc, bringing quality product to a customer community begging for mature and evocative stories. Paizo has every reason to be happy and hopeful.

I know I am going to sound like a total fanboy when I say this, but I have never felt the kind devotion for a company as I do for Paizo. I absolutely love this company and I directly interested in seeing it succeed. There are many people just like me and you have found a way to strike straight to our heart and insure our loyalty. That is an impressive deed.

Don't just feel good about this, feel GREAT! I haven't got my copy yet, but I am so excited for it to get here. I feel incredibly lucky that I was introduced to Paizo and Pathfinder in time to be part of the community excitedly waiting for the release date. I seriously haven't been this excited about a package since I was a kid around Christmastimes. I don't know just how many packages you guys had to pack, tape, label and ship, but I know it was a ton and I give all the paizo staff a HUGE THANK YOU!!! for all the hard work you've put in. Try to remember that all the people whining on the boards are doing so because they love your products and are anxious to see the awesomeness for themselves. That doesn't make their behavior acceptable, but it might make it less depressing. Also, I think the ratio of complaints to compliments is skewed to the bad because all the people who have their books don't have time to say the good stuff cause they are too busy falling in love with their books. It's all the bored, loney people who have nothing better to do than whine who are posting. Once everyone gets their copies I bet the boards are going to quite down (at least until an errata thread gets started ;)

Okay, I'll stop rambling now....

I agree that Paizo has done an EXCELLENT job. I for one am extremely happy with getting my book today, which is my 43rd birthday present, which was this past Saturday. It is, by far, the best looking RPG tome I have ever purchased. And I have been buying them since 1984. On top of its appearance, this is already shaping up to be the best content, also. It is revitalizing my urge to run more games, something that has been slowly leaking out of me for the last couple of years. I would love to thank everyone at Paizo for an excellent product.

You have nothing to be sorry about or feel bad about. Sitting on the sidelines here I think you did a hell of a job. The people doing the complaining either don't understand the complexity and work involved, or just have no patience. Relax (if you can yet) and pat yourself on the back (for me) for a job well done. And if you think the whining about shipping is bad wait until the PDF sales hammer your servers :) Save some patience for the whining to come. You'll need it. Good luck.

Scarab Sages

Vic, Lisa, and everyone else -- I'd like to extend another heartfelt "THANK YOU!!!!!" to everyone at Paizo, especially those who put in hard work coding, packing, etc. to get this release going.

Remember, the nay-sayers and complainers tend to be a vocal minority. There is usually a lot more people who are at least satisfied, if not ecstatic, about how things have gone. (We should try to be more vocal with praise than complaints, too.)

Vic, I think most of us who haven't received our books yet aren't at all disappointed or angry with Paizo, at least I'm not.

Its more like the extreme anticipation of finding a really cool Christmas present under your parents bed and knowing you can't touch it for a week (cause your sister will rat you out). I know I'll be fine with the pdf til it arrives at my door.

I honestly figured I'd be reading the PDF for several days before getting the real deal. I was pleasantly surprised to get the book so early and sincerely appreciate both the hard work you guys put into creating it and shipping it out to all of us hungry customers. If I didn't have mine right now I'd certainly feel envy for those that do but I can't imagine I'd be able to find a reason to be mad at you guys.

I got mine today as well. I'm really impressed by the job the warehouse staff did in the packing. Those foam inserts were really nice at protecting the book despite however the package would have been bumped and dumped in transit. For one box I know the four pieces of foam weren't really that expensive, but over however many thousand the team put together it must have really added up.

It's just another case of showing how much everyone at Paizo both really gets RPGs and cares about gamers. Just more evidence of why you're one of the best companies, not just rpg companies, but companies period, out there today.
