Did anyone notice that General Maximillian Veers who broke the backs of the rebels on Hoth is in A Game of Thrones?

In a key position no less. The arm of the Empire is long indeed !

Now if only the Order of the Night's Watch had a few AT-ATs ...

edit: Hey that's also the 501st thread post ! Vader's Fist would be proud !

Looks like March 20th. Seems about right. IIRC They put out the 3rd season of True Blood out a month before the 4th season premire on HBO.

Makes sense to film at same time if they are splitting third book into two seasons.

Also, we have an offical date for the DVD/ Blu ray of season 1.

March 6, 2012.

New trailer for season 2. Lots of new footage.

Better quality version here.

Cool stuff. The comet, a dragon, a (possibly-CGI) direwolf, Stannis and footage from the Blackwater. All good. Though it does seem to confirm that Robb Stark's storyline, in particular, will unfold differently to in the books (i.e. we actually see his military campaign rather than just hear about it off-page).

I think that's to the good. The thing that began to grate on me more and more as the series has gone along is how much key action took place off-screen. What seemed fresh and intriguing as an example of a dynamic world where stuff was happening all over the place in the first book or two started to feel really cheap and lazy by book five. YMMV.

Another trailer some stuff we have not seen. some battle stuff, not saying what battle LOL.

Just picked up the Blu-Ray :-D

Also, our first proper look at a Season 2, CGI-enhanced direwolf.

Plus, THE SIMPSONS does a GAME OF THRONES-style intro.

By the way, (spoilers from the very end of book five!)

Spoiler:
there is no real reason to think that Bolton actually beat king Stannis. Evreything that has to do with the latter he sent John seems like an attempt to lure him into stuipdly charging through the winter snow the confront Boltons' forces and lose. The entire " I killed your king" thing might just be a lie. This is also supported by the NEW EPISODE FROM WINDS OF WINTER avilable to read on Martins' web site - http://georgerrmartin.com/if-sample.html
I actually think that Bran and his story line are Martins' secret weapon, as it were. It makes a lot of sense that Bran needs a great amount of time to improve his magical skills while the rest of the world keeps on moving fast. Remember that Martin originally planned to make a "leap" in the time line in the middle of the series, but decided against it. That means that some characters, like Bran and Arya, need the time to grow up and become the true heroes they are destined to be. I am willing to take the long wait if Bran will become a true force and influental character on the story in later books. Patience is the key word with Martin. Give him the time, and he'll take you to the ride of your life.

More discussion about the end of book 5:

Spoiler:
I read an interview somewhere in which Martin outright said that readers should NOT take Ramsay's letter as truth...here's the link. That doesn't mean there's no truth to it, but I'd be surprised if that whole battle took place offscreen.

That being said, I have plenty of other gripes with Martin at this point...most of my complaints with ADwD are set forth (by someone else) here.

Interestingly, the producers have said that each region will have a distinctive accent (for example, the North has a Sheffield/Yorkshire vibe based around Sean Bean's native accent) so pronunciations will vary by those accents.

This really makes me wish they can find a walk-on part for Jarvis Cocker in one of the later seasons.

An interesting episode last night, but methinks a bit too much crammed in to one hour. Looking forward to the rest of the season.

So what did everyone think of last nights show?

Loved Theon's homecoming.

Balon's audience chamber with the octopus sculpture was badass.
Stannis' table is still awesome.
Melisandre can convert me to the Lord of Light any day.

So far season 2 is off to a good start--definetely feels like these early episodes are moving pieces around for some big events in the later half of the season.

I had friends complain that it is still moving slowly but I explained that things had to but set into motion before things could come to a head.

As someone who loved season one I am very unimpressed so far with season two.The books seemed to move faster IMO.

Part of the reason why it is slow is because they are introducing a number of new characters. If they introduced them all at once audiences would be confused and lose interest. Better to be interested still and complain things are developing slowly than confuse people and have them tune out. I could be wrong but that is my guess as to why they are taking the approach they are taking.

That was awesome! Gave me a creepy Lovecraft vibe, in a good way.

I like that they have already started to move on with the Ayre subplot, and not farted around keeping her secret from the smith-kid for half the season.

The Daenarys, Queen of the Desert bit is getting stale. She got jerked around all last season by circumstance, and I'm so over that. Either have *something* in the universe go right for her, or have a big red comet splash down on her and abandon that entire continent, because it's just a big waste of time, right now.

I'm finding it hard to warm up to Stanis, since he's basically a tool of the evil redhead. Do we need another tool? (And does Sersi really need competition in the manipulative lady department?) Are there any Baratheon men who aren't being jerked around by their naughty bits? Gah.

I don't think Stannis is meant to be warmed up to.

How many men aren't jerked around by their naughty bits?

Daenarys' plot will have more life as the plot moves forward.

Dennis Harry wrote:

I always liked his consistency and commitment to honesty in the books, though I've yet to read the latest. He's still not an admirable character but a lot of what he does seems to have a kind of twisted nobility to it. In a way, he's a lot like Eddard Stark. Both men adhere to pretty rigid codes of behavior, often despite the cost and at the expense of good sense.

Stark's code is easier to take, but that's partly because of so many POV characters being Starks. To Bob Westerosi, Ned Stark probably doesn't look very different from Stannis except in having a better sense of humor and more charisma.

I agree Stannis is somewhat like Ned Stark but I doubt Stannis would have caved at the end of his life and renounced anything, he is harder and colder than Ned though we do see him geting down with Melisandre (I think that is her name). I don;t remember that scene in the book though so it may have been added for the show (HBO needs more skin people!)

I recall that the books, at least up though Feast for Crows, at least strongly imply that Stannis has knocked boots with Melisandre and has probably done it more than once.

It's been quite a while, but doesn't Stannis's daughter briefly appear in the books? Something about Davos passing her in a hallway in Dragonstone and having a brief conversation? Ned caved to spare Sansa and Arya. Stannis hasn't been in a similar position.

Stannis ' daughter is in the 5th book.

I agree Stannis was not ok that position I agree but his characteristics as Martin describes leads me to believe he would not cave, just my opinion mind you.

My interview with George R.R. Martin at EasterCon 2012. We talk about the TV series, the books and his career as a whole.

HBO has renewed GAME OF THRONES for a third season, to air in the Spring of 2013. At the moment it sounds likes the season will again consist of 10 episodes, although HBO has not officially confirmed this. However, in recent interviews the producers have said they cannot make more than 10 episodes a season without a substantial increase in budget and time, so it seems unlikely it will be more than this.

Season 3 will cover approximately the first one-half to two-thirds of A STORM OF SWORDS, the third novel in the SONG OF ICE AND FIRE sequence. The novel is too long (half again the length of the first) to be adapted into one season. According to the producers, they plan to culminate the season with an event code-named 'RW' (book readers should work this out immediately).

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are returning to produce and co-write most of the season. George R.R. Martin should be contributing one episode as usual. It's too early to talk about casting, but major roles debuting in Season 3 should include Oberyn Martell, Mance Rayder and Tormund Giantsbane, as well as the delayed Edmure and Hoster Tully (and possibly the Blackfish). Production should resume in Belfast (and presumably Dubrovnik and Iceland) in June or July this year.
