Since when? The xl engine could always have any type of heat sink and used to NOT be linked to type of engine. What made it lighter was the lighter but bulker engine shielding material not heat sinks. This is what the books I have say at any rate.
It's mentioned in Maximum Tech (I think) that the XL engine comes from using a special radiation shielding comprised of a crystalline lattice polymer identical to the one used in Double Heat Sinks. This is later also brought up in later books.
There's nothing in the rules that stop you combining the two, but that always annoyed me to no end.
Basically the violation of internal universe consistency bothers me. I probably am guilty of riding the Hatchetman overly harshly for it though.
Dies Irae |
On the topic of annoyingly flawed 'Mech designs, I find them surprisingly absent in TRO3067, which in addition to shafting all non-FedCom Houses is probably why it is one of my least favorite Technical Readout.
Design flaws come roaring back with TRO3075 and TRO3085 though. My gut feeling is the proliferation of Improved Jump Jets, Compact Engines, Plasma Cannons and the like in TRO 3075 and 85 will terrify the average RetroTech or ClanTech guy into dropping the book and fleeing in terror.
Another problem with the later TROs include proving that although the man has skill in designing and drawing vehicles and painting battle scenes, Doug Chaffee cannot draw BattleMechs without them coming across as out of scale gangly power armor.

Nope not in maximum tech, which does not talk of standard xl's at all. I am not sure where that line comes from but it is not in Maximum tech or the compendium. So really not sure where it came from.
As it stands unless it is something new it flies in the face of what is in my books.
And we all have those mechs we just dislike, it happens.
And as TRO's , yeah the last two I started to get but..ugh. Not only are they bad art, but yeah the new tech is super everywhere and not my cup of tea. Some here and there cool..but it is like maxiumtech exploded in those books.

The did alot with the charger, but ya see the charger is one of those oh so silly flawed mechs that was made that way in game for reasons. It does not make sense in game, but once ya read the fluff your like" Oh yea, red tap and someone has an agenda other then buying good mechs"
Many of BT's flawed mechs are like the charger, not great mechs that got put into production due to red tape and greasing of palms
I did like the idea that a few 'mech that were primarily added for flavor. But I also liked that the mechanics existed to make them better that also had a good in story explanation.

3067 was probably full of a lot of FedCom = Main Characters type philosophy. I'm actually very much looking forward to picking up TRO 3085- It's supposed to be chock full of DA love. I will let you know what I find. Is Doug Chaffee the main guy who did the DA art? If so, I luvs him.
Freehold DM |
No offance man, but most of those DA mechs are just gods awful. I know just what Dies Irae is saying up there. I looked though the books and saw many of those power armor suits.
The again I don't like my battlemechs to look like they steps out of a gundam setting.
Hey, I don't like my mechs looking like walking toasters(complete with strangely anthropormoric feet) with odd bits pointing out like that interrogation droid in Star Wars, nor do I like utterly flawless mechs that walk through the competition, but to each his own.
seekerofshadowlight |
Yep you are a DA player all right. The style is just totally different. I came in when we called SRM and LRM packs and you had one auto canon.
I don't like decorations and claws and beaks of the like on mechs. To be far they started going goofy in TRO 3060 with the intro of the protomechs
I can't think of many DA mechs I thought looked like they fit the setting, the Sphinx is nice looking
And the freaking Jupiter is the ugliest mech known to man.

I'm sorry you don't care for the Jupiter, but I LOVE the Sphinx, I look forward to using it to crush you utterly. Not a big fan of claws and beaks on mechs, but I do love the melee weaponry. Loved the Hatchetman, although Dies' critque of it was mostly foriegn to me.
David Fryer |
Personally, my two favorite mech are the Nightsky and the Highlander. One I love for the reverse facing axe, which mirrors the style of knife fighting I was trained in, and the other I love for the shear fact that a 95 ton mech can fly. When I played Mechwarrior though I was a Battlemaster pilot, so that holds a special place in my heart as well.
seekerofshadowlight |
Heh, clan player, so I don't use the melee stuff all that much. Highland burial I have done a few times..hehehe
Not sure what the sphinx has but it has a nice solid old school look, right at home with the victor and the like. Sphinx is a clan mech though Nova cat if I recall.
My first ride was a shadowhawk, still have a place for it as well.

Me, I likes 'em all. I enjoy fast light mechs as well as lumbering battlefield controllers. I enjoy seeing an 90 ton colossus brought low by dozens upon dozens of battle-armored anti-mech infantry, then seeing said infantry mowed down by a flamer-equipped tank. I enjoy seeing hoverbike and light hovertank squads get into position to spot for artillery, as well as the lance of Urbanmechs and Hollanders nestling in between rarely used buildings to squeeze off the occasional shot to cover their little buddies. I enjoy it all.

You're probably thinking of Franz Vohwinkel. Franz is master of the exaggerated motion shot.
Chaffee is a hard one to pin down. On one hand, he's capable of producing paintings of Great Beauty. On the other hand, his line art ranges from gritty realism for his tanks to gangly disproportionate messes like the Kuma in TRO 3085 and Black Watch in TRO 3060. Man just produces wonky BattleMech line art.

Then I may be wrong. It goes a long way towards assuaging my dislike of the HCT-5S then.

It was rushed into service by the Crack Kitties during the Jihad. Basically a stripped down Highlander chassis with gobs of lasers designed to act as a Black Hawk replacement.
Won't post the TRO Entry, but you can already guesstimate what it does from the profile.

Solaris 7 'Mech. So wacked out that even the current rules ban it from 'Tournament' level play.

It is a "Grand Turtle." Even my beloved B-mer is ugly, in an lovable sort of way.
I like the new battlemaster art really

Not to ad, it looks like a highlander. I like it over all.

I think that the Blood Kite is uglier than the Jupiter.

I love it too. I even used it as my profile pic on Facebook for awhile. It is still a cute/ugly mech.

What the crap are compact gyros, compact engines, and torso mounted cockpits?
Dies Irae |
OK, I have a scenario title...
"Dis ain't no frickin beauty pageant 'ere."
Anyone want to write up the Mech list and the scenario to go with it? :)
The aim is to make a battle that is made up of the ugliest canon Mechs in game.
It could be a Solaris 7 grudgematch. I'll think about when I get back from work.
Meanwhile, enjoy the latest entry in "My Eyes Bleed":Colossus
