Today has turned into a terrible day. I was informed by my boss that I have been given my two week notice. I'm not supposed to tell anyone, so keep it on the down low.

Wow. Bad news, bro. Sorry.

They give you notice? Here in MI we just get whacked.

Yeah, I get to complete the term which ends August 7th. If anyone knows of a teaching job, let me know.

That's awful. Will you at least be able to draw unemployment?

yes, but it's only $1200 a month. I was making more than twice that and I was still struggling to make ends meet.

Yeah, that just stretches out the pain. It ain't worth anything, but you've got my sympathies. :)

They've been cutting teacher jobs down here (SW FL) and increasing class sizes. They cut out most of the "non-essential" classes (art, music, etc.) except the boys football programs, and laid off nearly all the non-union janitors and groundskeepers 'cause "they cost too much."

Yep, the wealthy can't afford tax hikes, and all of the school managers and county managers still have their jobs without any pay cuts.

Edit: Sorry for rant.

I just applied to a school in Palmetto, Florida.

That's north of here, just north of Bradenton and south of Tampa. I'm pretty sure the job situation is better up there, like it is over on the South East coast. I'll keep positive thoughts out for you. :)

PS Hope you like moist heat... it's been pretty muggy down here (typical FL weather).

Sorry to hear about your job, David. Good luck with the school in Florida.

UGH. I'm sorry, David.

I lived in Pensacola for awhile, and in Alabama. I've gotten used to muggy weather.

I've applied to about 12 different schools this afternoon. Hopefully one of them will pan out.

I like the Tampa/Bradenton/Sarasota area. It's nice - my father lives around there.

So, I'm hearing something about the Jacks picking a fight with the Paizonians. Any truth to that?

Bummer Dave. That sucks! Hope everything works out and you find something soon.

Oh, gosh, I hope not. Talk about internal conflict. ;)

I'm really sorry to hear your bad news, David. Good luck in finding something quickly. Make sure to look down here in Texas. I've heard the market isn't bad for teachers down here, but I don't have anything definite.

So do your employers not want you to say anything so you don't spook the other teachers and lower morale?

Pretty much. Plus a lot of the girls I work with suffer from abandonment issues and would be crushed if they knew I was leaving. I've been the only good father figure many of them have had. I've been looking at Texas. They start the teachers at $44,000 a year. That is almost twice what I'm making now.

Dark Archive

My wife is applying for jobs in Texas as we speak.

Liberty's Edge

Good luck David!

The only downsides I know of for switching states as a teacher are that they usually 'restart' your tenure and some require extra credits for teacher cert (every state believes their education system to be the 'best').

Texas rocks. My little brother lives in Houston and loves it. He's always encouraging me to move down there.

Has anybody noticed that these boards die from about 2pm to 4pm EST (11am to 1pm Pacific, 7pm to 9pm UK)?

darn work thing...

Liberty's Edge

It's the after-lunch drowsiness. Hard enough to focus on work, much less goofing off. ;)

Man I am sorry David, the offer for the couch and dinner stands if you need it! We are looking into Houston as well! Derek is helping us look for decent areas with good schools! Hey if we all end up there we have to have a heck of a gaming session!!!

Precisely! For me, that is the time that I least want to do actual work, and would most like Paizo posts to read.

lunch. everyone breaks for lunch, even in the wars... ok... maybe not then, but, you know what i mean.

cough

So we went to go light the grill to make some burgers and barbecue wings for supper, and when we lift the lid, we find a wasp's nest inside the grill. Hilarity ensues as we try to figure out how to deal with this. My husband is deathly allergic, so not getting stung was pretty important. He starts calling several people trying to figure out what to do and gets all kind of crazy suggestions. In the end we ended up using the garden hose to drown them. Luckily no stings. We're going to Subway for dinner tonight.

I was at a museum one time, and they had some WWII era French rations on display. They included a tin of wine.

Yikes! Glad you got rid of them, and grilling would lose its appeal for me too after seeing a wasp nest. :)

Mostly it was just going to take too long to get the grill all cleaned up after all that. Guess we'll grill tomorrow night. :)
