I'm probably years late here, but:

Mu!

I'm only halfway through but I have to say this thread is extremely interesting.

EDIT: And done, read it all and just barely in time to beat the 1-hour edit buzzer. Interesting, good stuff. Sadly not much I can contribute, but I'll keep reading as the discussion continues, or doesn't. Whatever floats your boat.

Thats better. Sorry I don't have anything more profound to add here, my actual knowledge of Buddhism is pretty anemic.

A copy of this book has been my companion for roughly 16 years.

It's not necessarily going to teach you what zen is, any more than reading a wikipedia entry. It is a collection of various quotes from all over the world that embody or represent part of the ideas of zen though. For a Westerner, it is a great book because it does incorporate people like Twain, Emerson and Thoreau, as well as the Bible, and some other random American/European sources (including Golfer's Digest). This can make it more approachable and accessible.

You won't necessarily understand Zen, but it can help you on your way to a zen mind.

Thread bumped because I missed it.

I also missed it the first time around.

Also also, now I'm wondering if Buddha used to drag his butt across the carpet.

Liberty's Edge

I suppose it depends how committed he was to remaining in a lotus position.

This is a spin-off from the "Civil Religious Discussion" thread, which is essentially a "compare and contrast Christianity and other views" thread. This thread can be used for other traditions; Buddhists, Hindus, Neo-Pagans, Atheists, and people of any other denomination, or none, are all equally welcome!

Because Leafar was very thirsty, he cried out to the Lights, "You have given your servant this great victory. Must I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the Unclean?" ~Book of Leafar 15:18

I recently saw Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons which was the best film about attaining enlightenment that I have seen in a while.

To the intent that now unto the Principalities and Powers in holy places might be known by the Church of Lights the manifold wisdom of the Lights, according to their eternal enlightenment, which we accomplish in our worldly journeys. ~Book of Leafar 3:10-11
