In the year or so since this thread was last posted in, our new style of Map Folios have been released. The Council of Thieves Map Folio was the last one that reprints the maps of most of the locations from the corresponding APs. For Kingmaker and Serpent's Skull, and continuing into the future, Map Folios contain only poster-size maps of a few large regions that feature in each AP; the small location maps are no longer included.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't even bothered looking at the Kingmaker map pack, but this encouraged me to dig it out.

Four wilderness maps plus the city of Pitax plus the village of Varnhold is actually pretty good. I definitely prefer it to the old style, and you've got me interested in seeing what you do for Serpent's Skull.

The Serpent's Skull Poster Map Folio has 8-panel poster maps of Smuggler’s Shiv, Saventh-Yhi, and Ilmurea.

I have liked the map folios all along. But I just received the one for Serpent Skull today and I love it.

I am very happy with the map folios and I like the new format even better. My vote continues to be to keep them.

Actually, I didn´t even bother opening the map folios any more - as I didn´t play or GM any AP right now, I didn´t need to, and they did not give me anything *new*. Just looking at the Serpent´s Skull map pdfs does make me want to use them right now, however. I think I will have to unwrap the Kingmaker maps later today. So, what it comes down to (I guess) is that they need to be an addition to the AP, not just reprinting stuff we already know. Perhaps future map folios could include other "goodies", like things that can be handed to the players, be it maps or other handouts. In fact, a (seemingly) crudely drawn map of Smugglers Shiv the PC can find somewhere might have been a nice add-on - not necessary for playing, but just nice.

I like the new map folio's better than the old ones. I still wish the covers where folders with little pockets to more easily store the maps in though.

I found the King Maker Map Folio extremely useful. I actually had things a little backwards till I had the maps out. The players love them too.

Though I have already mentioned it. I would have like a large Map of the Area of play.

Love the poster map folios a lot more than the old ones. The old map folios were basically useless to me, except for the poster maps therein.

+1 to all of this

While I use some of the maps etc, I tend to buy them more for completist reasons than practical.

Though I always appreciate city/tavern/town/castle maps more than other types.

The poster-style maps are much less useful for me. I miss the old style, which saw heavy use in play. It'd be a nice value-added thing if subscribers could get a PDF of the consolidated maps for ease of printing.

I don't think we are going to win this one Russ, too many people disliked the old format.

I am under the same opinion as you, I am going to get very little use out of these, would have gotten a lot more use from the old format, if and only if they finally started removing the markings on the map.

Also though I understand they want to keep these "Affordable" I am under the opinion that is bringing the usefulness of these down even more, similar thing is happening to the flip mats.

What I would like to see is for ALL the maps unmarked from the AP to be put out in these fully aware that would raise the price. This "Half-Ass" stuff is really just annoying.

Right now I am just printing them out, but in the long run it pretty much adds to the price I would pay for them put together by Pazio because of the cost of Ink and Paper I go through.

Though I think the Maps are pretty, there usefulness is lacking.

My opinions about the maps has been expressed quite verbally in the past.

Even with the recent changes, my opinion remains unchanged; there's no reason to rehash it again, but in short - I find them a complete waste of money and would gladly dump them from my subscription if I could. As they are now, I consider them a "Tax" to getting my free PDFs.

Silver Crusade

I happen to like the Map folios. I tend to use them, both as player handouts, and to save myself the trouble of having to flip back and forth when i am going through and adventure path.

I also like the art work.

Also, im sure someone else has mentioned this, but i find the map folios extremely useful for canibalization for my own home brewed campaigns.

There is nothing like a good map for your Players to look at if they are a) doing a city adventure, b) on an exploration adventure or c) worried about the bid dark overlords orc/goblin/ hobgoblin/zombie/ghoul/ demon/devil filled horde and what lands he wants to swallow up, and how they can avoid his army of mass destruction.

In short i like them and hope Paizo continues producing them.

Have to agree with MisterSlanky here. Currently have every map pack released for an adventure path to date still in there origonal packaging having never been touched. I dont mind the option of being able to buy them I just wish there was a way to avoid hetting them as part of my subscription.

In the Current incarnation or even the Past incarnation I could live with out them.

This could be a useful product, Just don't think people other then a few of us would be willing to pay for what it would cost to make it a useful product.

Agree with both. I have no use for them and only get them because I have to and they come with my subscription. I can't even understand who would use them for what purpose. In the old days when we had maps they had numbers and a key that said that #14 was the blacksmiths shop etc.. these... not so much? They're uhh pretty I guess.. but basically useless to me, unless I'm missing something somewhere lol

Didn't like the first few map folios because it didn't really give you anything that wasn't already in the adventure path.

I LOVE the Serpent's Skull Map Folio:
A) It came out before the adventure path ended.
B) It gave me shiny BIG maps of the primary adventure cities ~ super useful to hang on the wall next to gaming with the comment, so what part of Saventh-Yhi are our heroes exploring today?

Actually inspired me to buy the Kingmaker Map Folio, since I had stopped buying the Map Folios.

Ditto to this.

Map Folios are *still* one of the biggest reasons I'm not subscribed to the Chronicles/ Campaign setting line. Spending ~$15/ month for the issues is borderline for me and adding maps pushes it over the edge.

Unless it was actual flip mats that I could use on a weekly basis maps just seem like a waste to me.

I didn't get THAT much use out of the RotRL set. BUT...I'm getting a HELL of a lot of use out of the Kingmaker set! I mean, we're just on the first map and it's hella useful for my players knowing where they've explored and what they've taken over and where that old bog witch set up shop. VERY NICE!

I'm guessing I'll get as much use out of the Serpent's Skull set too considering its sandboxy approach.

EDIT: I do hope you all keep the maps as BLANK as possible as my players and I like filling in the blanks.

I agree. My players love the King Maker maps. Really give them a feel for what's out there. I like because it gave me better birds eye view over the whole AP.

I love the current incarnation of the Map Folios (the large poster maps are very very nice).

The only thing that would be better is if the Map Folios also included all of the encounter maps in both a marked and non-marked version. That was the main problem with the old incarnation of the Folios, in my mind; I wanted non-marked maps to use as handouts to my players.

I suspect the price of each Folio would be a bit too high for most people then though..

I only get them because they are part of my subscription, personally I wish they were not. I love maps, but as others have said, with the pdf of the adventure, I already have this map.

Mow if the map pack came with additional content, not included with the adventure; player handouts, player maps or such, I might be more interested.

As I mentioned above...

I like the Map Folio for Kingmaker and Serpent Skull. For these 2 APs this format works. For other APs, like Council of Thieves, I am not sure it would work. I would rather you did not commit to one type of Map Folio for every future AP. Having more options is good.

That said, I would like to have the option to purchase the maps of the smaller locations. Perhaps you can do 2 map folios per AP. One with the poster maps and one with a few locations. Or you can have more GameMastery tie-ins, like this map. For Serpent Skull especially, I think putting out a ruin or ziggurat flip map would be smart.

I was moving my books to a different shelf and realized that all my map folios (ie all the map folios) are still shrink wrapped. I can't be bothered starting and stopping my subscriptions but I really don't use these things.

Owner - House of Books and Games LLC

I use them (I use the PDFs as much as the physical maps), but I have to say I'm really disappointed in the Skull & Shackles one.

It's got three maps in it; one of Port Peril and two near-identical maps of the Shackles, and neither is labeled, unlike that awesome downloadable map in the blog entry.

Which would have been much more useful as the third map in the Skull & Shackles folio than a second unlabeled map of the Shackles.
