Looking for a good Pathfinder PDF

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

I plan to buy a Pathfinder PDF to get a sweet discount and to spite a certain company who shall remain vague. A hint would be Wizards something-or-other. No, wait, that's too obvious. Make that Something-or-other of the Coast. That's better.

But I'm not that familiar with the setting, so I figured I would ask those who know. I have tons of adventures, so that's not really what I'm looking for; what I'm most on the lookout for are templates and racial classes a la Savage Species or Savage Progressions. Are there any Pathfinder PDFs that have lots of either?

They don't have any major monster books out with actual stats--you'll have to wait until the "real" Pathfinder RPG for that. However, their Classic Monsters Revisited is great! And I just got Dragons Revisited and it seems to be up to the same bar. Both are Pathfinder spins on classic D&D monsters from a largely flavor perspective. There are some feats and such in both to tie in mechanics. I also really liked the Guide to Darkmoon Vale as a set-piece type of book.

If you're not looking for adventures and are unfamiliar with the setting, I'd suggest the Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting or the smaller (and thus less detailed) Gazetteer. Golarion is a great setting, evocative of the best and most popular genres of gaming for the last 35 years, all rolled into one world. I'll also second the recommendation for Classic Monsters Revisited if you're interested in monsters, though it's not really anything like Savage Species. That said, Paizo has indicated that there is a lot of interest in a similar book for the Pathfinder RPG line once that is out in August, so the chances of seeing one sometime in the future are probably pretty good.

I want said Pathfinder/Savage Species book right now.

I believe Sean K Reynolds is very experienced in this design area. Tie him to his desk immediately and don't let him go until it's finished. Please and thank you.

While everybody else's suggestions have been spot on, I'm afraid the Pathfinder-related book of templates you're looking for isn't going to be coming down the line for a while. The PFRPG and Bestiary are probably going to be the closest things, as those should have a few surprises for template lovers. Barring all that, you have Green Ronin's Advanced Bestiary, right?

How about just suggesting your favourite module?

I am also looking for an entry point, and this sale is a good opportunity.

I thought Classic Monsters Revisited was a great way in, but you may not love flavor as much as I. If you want to look at adventure modules, check out the two free Darkmoon Vale adventures 1 and 2. If you like them, you might want the main adventure that goes in-between those two. The first two player's guides should also be in your downloads. Take a look at them. If you like the Darkmoon Vale and the kinds of background you see in the player's guides, you might want the Guide to Darkmoon Vale, as already mentioned. For that matter, there's another adventure in Darkmoon Vale. What is it? Into the Haunted Forest? I think I've seen scenarios set in the that area too, if you go mad for it. Maybe others more acquainted can comment on Into the Haunted Forest and those scenarios? Two different groups of players I ran it for liked the region as an entry into the setting and Hollow's Last Hope as an adventure.

Me too - I'm not sure which to download and wouldn't mind downloading one or three - just not sure where to begin. The Gazetteer seems interesting, but then I've read that the new setting will include the Gazetteer, so I don't want to get something that's gonna be reprinted in a bigger and better format this summer.
What about companions or modules?

I'm not interested in a world guide of any sort - I'd just like a good module to read through, preferably one that has a city adventure at its core, as opposed to a dungeon crawl.

Any idea where i could get a physical copy for a reasonable price? I bought the other two GR books when they were $5 a piece, and don't expect a deal like that to come by again.

Sorry, my suggestions are not urban. Myself, I'm looking to get the Pathfinder Chronicles Guide to Absalom. That's the great urban center of the setting.

I'm getting Dragons Revisited, when it's available. My group are all about dragons.

Both the second and third adventure paths started off with city adventures at the core. (and Pathfinder #1 had about half the adventure located in a mid sized town).

Pathfinder #7: Edge of Anarchy
Pathfinder #13: Shadow in the Sky

I think both adventures are excellent. Also, you can download the players guide for Curse of the Crimson Throne (which is the adventure path that starts with Pathfinder #7) for free.

I can highly recommend the Crimson Throne AP, as I am GMing it :) Edge of Anarchy is a good urban romp, with a variety of locations to deal with. Also, the APs give you the following in each book: an adventure, new monsters, two articles that help to understand the world and/or expand on it, an installment of fiction that further enhances the world feel, and sample iconics to see what characters might be like.

In Seven Days to the Grave, one of the articles is about Abadar, a major diety and important to the city of Korvosa, and in that article there is a PrC, the Justicar.

Hope that helps!

The Crimson Throne Adventure Path is Urban, for the most part.

As far as Modules go... U1 Gallery of Evil or U2 Hangman's noose might fit your preferences.

The Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting should be available right now for you.

Thanks for the suggestions. Since D1 has a free lead-in and a free sequel, I think I'll try that one. U1 and U2 sound pretty good too - perhaps I'll come back for those next time.

The sale does go to the end of the month. See you soon.

Best accesory book ever!

Is the Advanced Bestiary available as a PDF through Paizo? I haven't been able to find it on the site, though I've found other Green Ronin products.

Arg! All the teasing is driving me crazy. Why can't it be September?!?

Anything regarding templates is good, so I am intrigued. I was going to buy PFRPG anyway, but now I might have to buy the Pathfinder Bestiary, too.

And no, I don't have the Advanced Bestiary. It might be fantastic, but I won’t be getting it, and here's why:

[/climbs up on soap box]

I want to buy a Paizo PDF, because the managing editor suggested a PDF from the competition because he was trying to help out a customer. He could have said buy such-and-such Paizo PDF, but he didn't; he suggested the best product he could come up with based on what I was looking for, even if it wasn’t from his own company. And you know what? I’ll bet any other employee at Paizo would have done the same. That’s why Pathfinder RPG, and Paizo, are so popular; because they listen to their customers, learn what they want, and do their best to deliver it. And you know what? That’s how you make a company successful. That’s how you earn customer loyalty. Not by taking legally-purchased PDFs away from your customers with only hours notice and giving no recourse for them to be able to download them ever again. Not by promising online features that you never deliver. Not by canceling print copies of the two most popular magazines that support your brand. Not by refusing to support your previous products just because the new one is out. And not by forcing companies to stop selling their previous products if they want to support the new one.

This is why Paizo has gained my RPG business, why another company has lost it, and the reason why I just bought four PDFs instead of one.

[/climbs off soap box]

By the way, I went with the suggestions to buy Classic Monsters Revisited, and Sweet Mother of All That’s Holy is it ever fantastic! Kobold slang!? Goblin fighting tactics (or not, I guess)?! Racial variants!? A feat that mimics scraping your nails across a blackboard to creep someone out?! Just, wow. You couldn't knock the grin off my face with a 2 x 4.
