I'm emailing this on behalf of a 16-year-old who emailed me to try and get help finding a gaming group. He lives in the Boston area and has some experience with D&D.
Besides starting his own group, which might be difficult since he doesn't have a lot of experience, where could he find a gaming group that's age-appropriate?

That's true, I suppose. Honestly the best way for a teenager to play is with close friends who also like and enjoy the game. If none are familiar with DMing, then get a few modules and take turns running through them.
One of the problems with a teenager playing with adults is that adults are constrained a lot more by those pesky schedules and you are far more likely to find a game that has a once a week or every other week play time set in stone. Teenagers can play whenever they are all free (and it happens a lot)... god, I remember those days fondly.

as beeing farely young myself, I agree with the gaming store. I was intorduced by sheer dumb luck, visiting a friends house one saturday and saw one of them (they were brothers) playing Baulders Gate(tm or (r)) and I asked what is that. They told me, and I came back a for a few weekends and saw the game, then they asked me if I wanted to play the ttrpg AD&D. So another method is find some friends and see if they are interested in trying it out but hey just my 2cp
