Resident Evil 5

I played this quite a bit this weekend with a friend of mine, and I can't recommend it enough. If you liked Resident Evil 4 and have a friend to play co-op with, then you will be doing yourself a favour by picking this game up.

The horror elements are still there (and, I would argue, are more genuine), the action elements are improved and incredibly fun, and the story is as convoluted and bombastic as ever! If you're a fan of previous Resident Evil games, pick this up!

So, is anyone else enjoying this as much as I am?!

I've always been a fan of Resident Evil, although I didn't truly get crazy for it until Resident Evil 2.

Resident Evil 4 was a good new twist on an aging series, and Resident Evil 5 makes this even better with co-op.

Me and a friend are playing through this one co-op and it's about the coolest thing ever in the series.

I think its funny how this one got so much flak because of the "race" of the zombies in question. God, I hate people sometimes.

I'm currently sucking the marrow from its bones. It has been a succulent feast thus far. In some ways I feel that RE4 is a more solid package overall, but RE5 has really shone in new areas. For instance, I'll take "You need to be careful!" over "LEON!!!" any day of the week. (as escort missions go, RE4 was one of the less painful, but still...)

At first I was really worried that the game had managed to get too serious. I mean, I've always gone to Silent Hill for "serious" horror. RE was for cheap thrills and B-movie cheese. That doesn't mean I love the series any less, it's just that it's always meant something specific to me. Lo and behold, once _______ shows up and hams it up for EVERY SINGLE LINE, it delivers the precious RE cheesiness tenfold.

END GAME SPOILERS

Spoiler:
Chris Redfield doesn't take any @#$% from boulders.

I laughed and cheered. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Man, I do miss Barry Burton though.

edit-

Spoiler:
Reapers can go to hell.

Spoiler:
Duvalia in enclosed spaces can too.

The co-op suggestion is no joke. The single player has a few issues to say the least. I made it to the end on single player and could not beat the boss. It wasn't that he was difficult to beat, in fact he turned out to be rather easy, but my partner's AI would not perform the necessary action. Finally my wife jumped in and we won in no time quite handily. Now were going through it on pro and just made it to chapter 3.

"LEON!!" was pretty bad, but I'm getting tired of hearing Sheva yell "Come on!!" every time I accidentally hit B. It's my fault, but still annoying!

As for the cheesiness of RE, nothing beats the original intro video, where the guy playing Wesker is slicking back his hair and putting on shades in a "cool" way.

Yeah, I'd heard that the AI is actually pretty terrible. I don't think I'll run through this game by myself, but the co-op is certainly adding an amazingly fun element to the game. I wasn't expecting to like the co-op so much, but here we are.

While I do like the game, and I'm busy working my way to what will hopefully be 1000/1000 gamerpoints, I do have some issues with it. Namely, it's not a horror game, and it's odd to describe it as such. It's an action game with a poor control system. Still really fun though. The boss fights in particular, though any game that lets you have a

goes quite a bit away from anything resembling horror.

I thought the AI was good myself. Sheva (or Chris, for that matter) can hold their own in combat, and don't seem to do too many stupid things.

Silver Crusade

The AI isn't that bad, but you do wind up having to babysit the AI partner's inventory.

The AI partner also has a nasty habit of using healing items the moment you get a papercut.

I have to admit one more minor gripe though before I get back to giving RE5 love vibes: There didn't seem to be as much in the way of epic set pieces as there were in RE4. Nothing really struck me quite as much as the Del Lago/lake monster fight in RE4(I have wanted to turn that into a DnD encounter for quite some time now, but never got around to it after the botched attempt at turning it into a land-based fight).

How that didn't sink the boat, I have no idea.
But this is the same series that had an entire city's architecture, public works, and security management managed by crazy people. Sewer access from the police station? By way of chess piece keys? Okay! Elaborate puzzles to hide a car battery? Okay! Apparently the mayor of Raccoon City has been blowing taxpayer money to hide away whatever shiny object catches his eye.

All part of the charm of the series, though. :)

I just loved the popping heads part and repeatedly annoying my brother with "Headshot" in a cheesy attempt to copy the Unreal Tornament announcer's voice.

Sovereign Court

So I just finished it co-op, and it was a pretty epic ending. Overall, this was one of my favourite Resident Evil games; I loved how well the co-op was integrated. Perhaps it was the way my friend and I played (he charging in with shotgun blazing, I picking off stragglers with shots from my rifle), but it really felt that the co-op element added a lot to the game. And although I admit the game might have been a bit less horrifying than previous iterations, I never once felt safe, and I had a few genuine moments of fear.

I hope this is the end of the series (though they did sort of introduce the potential for other Weskers (like Alex Wesker, in one note). Please, no Resident Evil 6! Spin-off, maybe, but not a 6!

Best parts:

Spoiler:

The aforementioned rock abuse! I remember hanging off a cliff for dear life, turning to my friend and asking: "Dude, are you really punching a rock? What did that rock every do to you?"

The classic line: "NOT ON MY WATCH!"

Running out of ammo against the final version of Wesker, resorting to both myself and my friend knifing him for about 2-3 minutes straight. We ended up losing, but the hilarity will always be remembered.

I think that's one my biggest disappointments with this game: the distinct lack of hexagonal cranks.

Love the game but RE4 was better.

Co-Op is fun....But making it a strictly co-op game with an AI partner if you play it solo I feel was a bad idea.

I'm still waiting for the PC version.

Having finally finished this game on Professional mode, where the annoying AI does come to the fore (and having got 1000/1200 gamer points in the process, damn DLC), I've come to the conclusion that while a good game, it's not that good a Resident Evil game. Dead Space is better for horror.

Still, it was enjoyable while it lasted. Might get the DLC and grind my way to the 1200 gamer points.

I really liked this game. I'm new to the RE series and fairly new to game systems, but this game's the best one I've played so far. Halo, Gears of War, Left 4 Dead... All were fun, but all were lacking in some way, IMHO, compared to RE5, and I'm a little surprised that RE5 hasn't gotten more praise. It's as graphically stunning as GOW, my next favorite, but with a more in-depth story, more detail and longer gameplay. I wish the rest of the series were available for xbox. Local co-op definitely makes this game, as it did the other games I've played, and I hope all FPS games will have that feature from now on. If you haven't played this one yet, pick it up!

Do yourself a favor and get a Playstation 2 on the cheap and a copy of Resident Evil 4. I think the reason RE5 wasn't ranked a lot better is because it didn't change the formula a lot from 4 and 4 was longer. To really get why 4 was great, of course, you have to play 1, 2 and 3 and note the difference.

Also recommended RE5.

I think Dead Space is 2x better from a single player standpoint as far as survival horror games go, but I could see the allure of co-op in RE5. I finished both games back to back recently (june-july).

Cant wait for RE6 and DS2 ;)
