"Please, wait. Kaelar, what are you doing? This is not right. We should not be fighting. We all want the same thing. We are supposed to all be on the same side. I will not allow you to do anything against Mirathan's family." She turns back to the queen. "If you wish to put me in a cell, then so be it. I swear to you I mean you and yours no harm. I only wish to help bring back Mirathan. Please believe me."

"I am not fighting, merely being cautious. But you are right, we should not be fighting." He also turns to the queen and bows. "I apoligize and wish to make ammends. It was said earlier that the King was sick. The water gods saw it fit to grant me healing abilities. Perhaps I could try to help him? It was also stated that you are still under attack. That too, I could help with."

[Queen] Deception. Chaos. Forgeries. First the body of Mirathan abducted, now our lawful right to protect ourselves in our own hall is flouted.

Yes, it seems the Dark still assails us.

And though the words from this child are sincere...to her...those words, those memories, may have been placed there by another.

No. Your offers can't be trusted. You are no Champion to us.

We will trust in our own means.

You will leave now. Do not darken these halls again. ...upon pain of death...

Her regal face no longer hides her weariness as she and the young prince leave the hall.

"Fine, but you had no reason to protect yourselves, I do not attack my allies, just defend my self using peacelful ways. Are you coming Nimora? We still have to find who has Mirathan."

[Regent]

No reason? Our city lays in ruins, our people slain by the thousands, our King stricken...

You strangers bring weapons into this hall, cloak yourself, and threaten the use of more 'relics'...

Go now. Whether you realize it or not, the Queen has given you a great gift.

"I am so sorry," Nimora says, weary with her own grief. "It wasn't supposed to be like this. I swear I will not rest until I find the ones who have taken Mirathan and bring him back."
With that she sadly leaves the hall, stopping only to collect her weapons on the way out.

When they are away from the city, Nimora turns to Kaelar. "Can you cast divinations? Can you find any clues at all to where they may have taken him? I - I have an idea if you cannot. Not a very comfortable idea. I am not in very good standing with my family just now. But I think I might be able to convince my mother to help me. Maybe. I hope."

"I can try to use my whorls. I usually use them for communication, but they could be used for divinations. I've never really tried using them that way before." A whorl appears in front of them and Kaelar looks into it intensely.

I don't know if that works or not, like he said, the whorls are usually for communication.

Looking deep within his whorls Kaelar replays the scene at the Oasis in his mind. Instead of sea elf supplicants he sees two forms of black. He looks towards the other 6 forms outside the portal but only sees the open seabed. Suddenly his mind feels as if its been stabbed with a hot iron poker.

"Kaelar? What do you see? Can you tell who took him? Kaelar? Are you alright?"

Kaelar grips his head in intense pain. "Don't worry Nimora, it was just someone stopping my scrying. Just give me a moment." Kaelar breaths deeply (using the rebreather only when the gills spell can't work.) and turns to Nimora. "The elves that took Mirathan's body weren't elves, the were servants of the Black. Why didn't I see that! I think there could be six more. As to where they were, all I saw was an open seabed. Whoever stopped my whorl was string enough to realize somebody was scrying, even more so because the actually hurt me through the whorl. I don't know where Mirathan is."

"Kaelar, can you transport us very quickly to a place? I am thinking that we could use a little assistance now. And if it involves fighting against the Black even my mother will put aside her personal feelings to help. She may be able to help us locate the trail. But I don't want to waste weeks traveling there from here."

Nimora's family are not bad people, well mostly. They're kinda like the Petrellis on Heroes. And Nimora is definitely Peter. There's a lot of scheming and ends justify the means crap. But overall, they should be willing to help in a situation like this. It might come with a price tag down the road though...

I understand you completely. Mica's one of my favorites.

"I'll need a really detailed description of the place first, but yeah, I should be able to do it."

Frogskin appears next to Sytt.
"Thank you, Sytt. I couldn't have done it without you."
He turns to Nimora and Kaelar.
"Nimora, I was happy to hear that you were brought back. Kaelar, it's been a while. Look, I need to talk to these people. I am from the Place of teh Winds, with luck they'll at least hear me out."

???? They're underwater and a long ways outside the portal still.

Nimora will draw a primitive picture of Sandreef in the sand, describing each building. It's not a tall impressive city like the one we just left, but it is sprawling. She explains that it is a center for trade and manufacturing.

Sytt asked if he could tag along with Nimora a while back, and Jay is a Lord so it is possible for him to do this.

Looking at the picture, The Bard calls several whorls into existence.

"Look through this and tell me which one is the place we need to go."

Nimora looks through several of the whorls before she sees Sandreef.

"There," she says, pointing, "that's the one. That's Sandreef. The one with the gold-leafed cathedral."

The other whorls dissappear and the one containg Sandreef grows larger. Kaelar begins to inspect it, trying to memorize all the details there are. A much bigger portal appears next to it.

"Does the city in this portal match the one in the whorl? If so, go in. I'll be right behind you, though I think I'll stay visible this time."

One minute, I'll explain.

Sytt grins, and a small ring is noticed, fading now that it's purpose it fulfilled.
"Not a prob."

Nimora looks carefully through the portal and nods. "Yes, that's Sandreef. Come on, Ethelbert. Let's see if we can't get some leads on where Mirathan is."

With that she steps through the portal.

"Back that way. In the big city there. Why do you need to talk to them? They're feeling a little hostile towards strangers just now. Just so you know."

Timeline puts this right before she steps through the portal.

He nods.

"I know. Good luck!"

*Kaelar stares at Jay before he steps into the portal after Nimora.*

Ethelbert follows Nimora

Nimora leads Ethelbert and Kaelar onto the busy waterways of Sandreef, expertly swimming either above or below the flow of traffic as needed. There are many merfolk of different varieties here, mermaids, sea elves, tritons, and aventi all swimming about their business. And there looks to be a great deal of business. You swim over an enormous crowded marketplace filled with all sorts of goods, then around an impressive building that Nimora tells you is the headquarters of the basketweaver's guild.
Most of the buildings keep low to the sand as the water is much shallower here than it was where you came from. If asked Nimora will explain that it's necessary to build short structures to avoid being a danger to navigation as many landwalker ships pass overhead, often stopping to trade with the residents of Sandreef.
The tallest, and by far the grandest of the buildings is the temple of Aventurnus. It is covered entirely in gold leaf, ornate jewel-encrusted carvings standing out along the main walls.

"There's no point even trying to go in," Nimora says as she leads you past. "We'd just end up being shown to some back room by an acolyte and forgotten about for hours if not days. We're better off just going to the house and waiting for my mother there."

She leads you onwards through the city, finally stopping at what can best be described as a villa.
"Here we are. Home sweet home and all that. I should warn you, I'm not really sure what kind of welcome we're likely to get."
She swims up to the gate where she is greeted very coolly by the doorman, but as he is in the process of turning them away he is interrupted by a strident voice from within. A plump older mermaid, flings open the gate, scowling at the doorman, and waves them inside.
"Nimora, you dear little thing. I never thought I'd see you again. Come in, come in. Ah, I see you've brought friends."
"Yes, thank you Maera. This is Ethelbert and Kaelar. We're here to see my mother. I don't suppose there's any chance she's at home?"
"No, dear, not at present, but she'll be back soon. Why don't you make yourselves comfortable here in the courtyard and I'll bring you something to eat."
"Lobster for Ethelbert, please. That's his favorite," Nimora says.
"Just as you like dear."

Sitting in the courtyard Nimora smiles at the other two. "Looks like we were in luck. Most of the others wouldn't have let me in, but Maera used to be my nurse."

A man slightly older looking than Nimora swims up to the party

What in Aventurnus' name brings you back here Nimora? Had enough frolicing with the air breathers?

Nimora sighs and plasters an insincere smile on her face. "Hello, Joren. It's good to see you too. Actually I'm here to see Mother."

"It's alright, Ethelbert. This is my brother, Joren."

"Joren, this is Ethelbert. And this fellow over here is Kaelar."

Joren sighs

I hope it is to apologize to her and perhaps return to your studies. We all had such high hopes for you..

He looks in distaste at Ethelbert

You could at least curb your new pet when you enter our household Nimora ...really.

Joren nods to Kaelar

An honor I'm sure.

He looks to Nimora again

So what do you have to speak with Mother about?

He is refering to his misunderstanding with Mirathan's family

"I will apologize if necessary," she says through gritted teeth, "but I am still not in the least cut out to be a cleric."

"Ethelbert is not a pet. He is my friend. At least try to be open-minded once in while, Joren. It won't kill you, I promise."

Nimora sighs. "An friend of mine, an ally in the recent battles against the Black, was taken by servants of the Black. I need to find out where he was taken so I can get him back, but there are powerful magics warding any attempt at scrying. And no, this friend is not a landwalker so you can put away that sneer for now."

Nimora Orlbereth wrote:

Joren looks like he swallowed a bad clam

ME not being open minded? Just because I put family, duty, and clan honor above my own petty desires? Well, then call me narrow minded then, I will wear your derision as a badge of pride.

He looks at Elbereth again

If he is your friend I would advise him to sheathe his weapons while in my house. My barracudas don't like threats towards me .

A few long vicious-looking fish swim just outside the house, giving Ethelbert the fishy eyeball ..

Nimora Orlbereth wrote:

Joren sneers anyway

I have nothing against landwalkers. Some of my best friends are landwalkers. If you need mother's assistance, be prepared to eat some humble eel pie ..

Joren chuckles nastily

"I hate to say this, Ethelbert, but he's right. You really shouldn't draw weapons while we are visiting my family's home."

Ethelbert lowers his daggers and puts them away

::My apologies Lady Nimora. It was rude of me::

He turns to Joren

::I humbly beg your forgiveness for my rudeness::

Joren looks at Ethelbert

That's all right. I understand it is difficult for someone of your class and species to understand the complexities of civilized manners. You are forgiven.

Joren waves at the barracudas and they swim farther out from the courtyard

Nimora gives Ethelbert an 'I-know-he's-an-ass-but-what-can-I-do-he's-my-brother' look and shrugs.

"Ethelbert, don't pay him any mind. I met people like this before. He thinks just because he is a cleric and a humanoid he must be better than you. So far I have seen nothing to attest to that."

"Thanks," she says, dryly, clearly not appreciating Joren's sense of humor. "But I think I'll just wait for her here."

Very well. You and your ... friends ... are welcome here. Maera do fetch them something to eat. Nimora looks a bit peaked, probably all that air breather food she's been eating.. You will excuse me, but I have several important errands to take care of.

Joren swims off

Nimora can tell he's going to run straight to mommy with the news of her return
