Question about Belt of Giant Strength

Magic Items

What is the significance of the 24 hour rule with the belt of giant strength? Can you get the enhancement from the belt and guantlets of ogre power?

The 3.5 DMG lists both as granting an enhancement bonus, so they don't stack, though they did in 2e, IIRC.

The 24-hour thing confuses me. It says a temporary bonus until they've been worn for 24 hrs.

My guess is that they mean it works once when you try it on, then you need 24 hrs. to "attune" to it, or something like that, to get a permanent bonus.

This would keep players from switching belts all day to get different bonuses for different situations, though it is a little unclear to me.

It means that if you want to take a bath you don't get a permenant bonus until you wear the belt for 24 hours...

This mostly affects spellchuckers because if it's not a "Permenant" bonus they don't get bonus spells from it.

Which would explain why Black Mage from 8-bit theatre stinks so badly... he can't take off his magic headband for a shower without significant penalties...

while fighter can and still get his bonus back with no problems becuase it doesn't affect long term bonuses for him.

So, in the instance of a sorcerer, they're not going to get bonus spells from having the charisma bonus from a rod of splendor? Just as an example.

On the Technical side? I would say not. YMMV of course by DM.

Personally I would just ignore the whole issue and keep to the old items, but we haven't had any problems with item swapping in my parts, this could be more of an issue for other people.

"This belt has a large iron buckle, usually depicting the image of a bull. The
belt grants the wearer an enhancement bonus to Strength of +2, +4, or
+6. This bonus is a temporary ability bonus until the belt has been worn
for 24 hours." From PF Beta Page 367

The way I read this that the bonus is temporary until the it has been worn for 24 hours after which the bonus is then gone or permanent. So if you remove the belt after 5 hours you lose the stat boost but after 24 hours what happens? My group we discussed this and figured it meant it was permanent after 24 hours but weren't sure.

we discussed the ability bonus ceasing after 24 hours of wearing the belt. To us though, that didn't make much sense as you'd just take the belt of and put it back on after every 24 hours. It would be assumed you probably remove the belt at least once in day so we thought this doesn't make sense.

We also though maybe it was worded wrong an they were meaning you have to wear the belt for 24 hours before getting the bonus. That's clearly not what the text say but maybe it was mistake. Then we though again, who wears a belt for days on end with out removing it and thought that was a little silly too.

So that left that first thought which we all of kind though was too good to be true where you'd get permanent +x to your strength. But then we though what's to stop you from just passing the belt around so everyone gets the +x.

In the end we decided it just gives you a temporary +X str while the belt is worn. We just weren't sure what they mean by temporary ability bonus.

For my understanding the permanent part means that the char is now eligible to qualify for feats and other stuff that has a minimum stat requirement. Of course he'll loose the benefits if he takes off the stat booster or it's fuction is supressed for some reason. If that interpreatation is correct I wonder if he needs to wear the Belt for another 24 hours before he gets the benefit of feats and such back.

Another very munchkinish interpretation would be that the benefits of temporary ability boosters, like the spell Bull's Strength, stack with a permanent bonus from an item despite both being enhancement bonuses (Not very likely but I see newbie GMs browbeaten into this.)
