DnD 4e 40k

4th Edition

Hi,

As I mentioned in another thread, im running a short game with my group while our normal DM is unavailable for a few weeks.

The game is basically going to be the old GW game Space Hulk.

So far I've come up with the following rules modifications

**As a note, these guys are supposed to more powerful than the average PHB race, but im going to be scaling the encounters up slightly to compensate. This si supposed to be a difficult game for them.

Race = Space Marine
Same as normal human plus
Centuries of Training - Proficient with all weapons and armour.
Gods Amongst Men - Add Con Modifier to Healing Surge.
And They Shall Know No Fear - You can spend your Second Wind as minor action.

The party will consist of
Sargeant - Warlord
Assault Marine - Tempest Fighter
Company Champion - Paladin
Librarian - Sorceror/wizard
Scout - Archer ranger
Special Weapon - Wizard

Equipment
Power Armour = Plate Armour
Chainsword = Bastard sword
Bolt pistol = Hand xbow + counts as melee weapon in Melee.
Bolt gun = superior xbow.
Powersword = +1 bastard sword, enc power - att vs ref.
Power Fist = Waraxe + guantlets of ogre power.
Thunderhammer = +1 Lightning craghammer.
Sniper rifle = Great bow.
Combiflamer = superior xbow + staff of fire

All of the powers are going to me renamed to have a more 40k relevant name.

Im also planning on giving each player a Chapter specific rule based on their choice of chapter. Roughly equivalent to a racial ablilty.

Some I've already come up with are: -
Imperial Fists - The Fortress of Humanity - Move 1 less square when pushed, pulled or slid.
Dark Angels - Unforgiven - +5 to saves vs powers with the Physcic or Fear keyword
Space Wolf - True Grit - Treat a Boltgun as having the "off Hand" property.

any comments/critisims/idea etc.

The main enemy of this group will be reskinned kruthik, which will take the role of the Tyranid menace. Might add a few 3rd or second generation Genestealers in there as well. Final bad dude will be a Genestealer Broodlord. or possibly a Hive tyrant depending on how mean I feel :D.

Wow,

Got to say your idea here may have convinced me to honestly give 4e a try. Up until I read your post I was dead set against it. I have a crap load of 40k material and I think this kind of use of the 4e rule set would fit the 40k world perfectly.

I ran a 40k game with 3.5 but it never seemed to "feel" right. But this just may make me decide to pull out my copies of 4e and give a new spin on my old 40k campaign.

THANKS!

eric

I agree with the ailing gnome above me, this sounds awesome. Can you keep us up to date on how this goes?

ok, these are teh chapter background choices ive come up with, along with the skill they grant

Imperial Fists - Fortress of Humanity – Stand your Ground - Move 1 less square when pushed, pulled or slid.
Dark Angels – Never Forgive, Never Forget – (infernal Wrath
Iron Hands – Hard wired Signum – Elven Accuracy
Space Wolf – Scent of Blood - BLoodhunt
Salamaders - Son of Nocturne – Fire resistance (like a teifling)
Blood Angels – The Black Rage – Dragonborn fury
White Scar – Steppe Born – Wild step
Iron Snake – First cast killer – improved initiative
Ultramarine – Codex pure – Second Chance
Blood Ravens – Honour the wisdom of the ancients – Eladrin Education

So I spent the weekend looking at monsters for this little game. Originally I had decided upon using Kruthik as the Tyranid standin BUT looking through the Monster Manual ive decided that drakes make a much better tyranid standin. All the need is a reskin.

Spiretop Drake - Winged Ripper
Needlefang Drake Swarm - Ripper Swarm
Guard Drake - Hormaguant
Spitting Drake - Termaguant (I've consider giving this one a FLY speed of 8 and making it also stand in for the Gargoyle)
Rage Drake - Genestealer

I'm also going to upgrade a Rage Drake to a Elite and make this the Genestealer Broodlord.

I've decided on using a Young Black Dragon for a Hive Tyrant stand-in, but im not sure if he will actually make it into the game.

I'm a MASSIVE fan of the minion rule, so a lot of the encounters are going to be with minions. Really gives a good way of emphasising the power of the Astartes AND the "endless swarm" nature of the Tyranid threat.

Take a look over in either the Races and Monsters or Homebrew sections of the WotC boards for the "Genestealers and their Cults" thread. There's a lot of good stuff in there that you'll want to see.

O_O

I actually know what you're referencing ... I suddenly feel very ill

AS long as the lightning bolts are coming out of the Librarians head, then this is all good :D.

Librarian - Sorcerer/wizard

Just wondering why you wouldn't consider a warlock for that role. The warlock's options for psychic attacks seems to be in line with some of the fluff to the 40k world. Granted, you could reserved that class for Chaos psychers.

The nature of the Sorc though seems like it plays really well into story since messing with psionics has consequences. Remember, Horrors of the Warp? :)

The thread is screaming: PBP! PBP! PBP!

I had originally considered warlock for that role, and I cant remember why i changed it. I think it was chaos bolt actually. It seemed to invoke part of the unpredictability of the psyker in the 40k universe. It would be easier to use a Warlock though i think.

Play by post. I am reserving a seat now, please.

To lift something off the WotC boards, you could think about using the Brutal property too. I would think like a Power Weapon would have it, or perhaps instead Mastercrafted weapons. Granted it has been years since I have played any 40k so my game terms might be mixed up some.
Chainsword definitely should be high-crit though. Just picture what a chainsword does to somebody when they are hit with it. ouch...

Ouch indeed

Ive decided to rewrite the chaper background options so each one offers a racial encounter power, rather than a racial ability/feat

for Example

Dark Angels – Never Forgive, Never Forget – infernal Wrath
Iron Hands – Hard wired Signum – Elven Accuracy
Space Wolf – Mark of Wulfen - Goring Charge (minotaur racial ability)
Blood Angels – The Black Rage – Ferocious Charge (Orc racial ability)
Ultramarine – The Codex speaks of this – Second Chance (halfling)

I think the balance works out a bit better than way. Thoughts?

I'm thinking of adding a Brutal 1 OR High crit to all chain weapons, but not both.

So how would a PBP work? Ive not played in one before.

I think that's a good plan - different powers are much easier to weigh against each other than a mix of powers and features. And the one's you went with seem solid, flavorful choices.

Brutal 1 makes it more reliable, High Crit makes it more prone to a sudden burst of damage. For a shorter game, I'd say go with the Brutal 1 (as High Crit could never come up at all, while Brutal helps mitigate the frustration of repeatedly rolling 1s for damage on cool powers.)
