Do the judges select 12, 4, or 0 to go on?

So, we vote for four. Does that mean that the panel of judges have picked 12 to advance and we vote on which 4 of the remaining 20 will join them? Or are their "recommended" for advancement comments more like guidelines? OR do they each pick one and then our votes are the other 12?

The top 16 vote-getters will advance to the next round. The judges' votes in this round, and the remaining rounds, all count the same as anyone else's. They're just here in an advisory capacity for the voting public.

We just give you our thoughts. Just like you can post your thoughts in each submission thread. We just give you our thoughts first to spur discussion and (in the case of Ed, Wolfgang and Sean anyway) provide a true professional designer's view of these submission.

We can cast 4 votes just like you. We dont have any more influence than you do.

Well, that's a very open competition!

What's this "Golden Ticket" thing I hear about every once in a while...

Thats a process in selecting the original top 32 (which the voters have no role in doing).

We judges review all the hundreds of submissions and sort them into "keep" and "reject" piles. It just takes 2 of the 3 judges to put an item into the "keep" pile.

Then, from teh keep pile we create a final list. IF we have consensus (ie 3 of 3 judges liek it) it goes on the top 32 list. Then we see how many more we need.

For instance, this year, only 20 items were consensus 3 of 3 items where all 3 of us agreed to put it on the top 32 list.

Then each judge gets a handful of golden tickets. From the remaining items in the "keep" pile not already on the list of top 32, we take turns using our golden tickets to fill out the top 32.

Basically, this competition gives me as much say as to who goes forward from here as it gives to Ed Greenwood.

And that's why democracy doesn't work.

Haha! It does sound a little crazy when put that way...

Boomer: repeat after me, the mantra that Wall Street bankers forgot: "Past performance does not predict future results." Publishers care about your next book, for them, not what you did in the past, except to the extent that it affects your next book, for them.

How come we are limited to only 4 votes in the second round. I have narrowed it down to 8 I would like to see advance and can't decide between them. Last year we were allowed 5 votes. The rest of the rounds last year were easier.

Round 3 - 4 of 16 or 1/4
Round 4 - 3 of 8 or 3/8 (over 1/4)
Round 5 - 2 of 6 or 1/3 (over 1/4)
Round 6 - 1 of 4 or 1/4

It is too late for this year, but I think for next year we should be able to vote for 8 of the 32 in round 2 which is 1/4.
