Encouraging play in PFS

Does anyone have any tips on how to encourage more involvement in PFS play? I am having a hard time trying to get people involved and was wondering if anyone has dealt with this problem, and have some suggestions on how to get more people involved.

Jonathan,

Are you near a game store? If so, have you approached the game store to help you host a game? Also, have you tried using Meetup.com or a Yahoo group to find local gamers?

These are the suggestions I can think of right off the top of my head.

Good luck!

Jonathan,

There are many questions that need to be answered before anyone can get close to giving you a proper answer to your problem.

Why are you having a hard time getting people involved? Is it because there aren't very many people who play these types of games living in your town? Is it because they are all playing something else and don't want to try Pathfinder? What are the barriers that are causing you trouble? Answer a few questions for us and I bet we can help you out.

1.) Where do you live? Large city, small town, village, thorp?
2.) Are there a lot of players around, or is that the problem?
3.) What are they playing if they aren't playing Pathfinder?
4.) Do you have a fear aura or other properties that
prevent/discourage commoners from approaching you?
Examples include heat/cold aura, troglodyte stench, or tendency
to dress like an anime or comic book character.

Without more information, my tips for you would be:

* Find out where people are playing games in your area. Ask to join them. Be friendly and helpful. Bring food. Win their trust. Suggest they try Pathfinder Society. Negotiate. Offer to GM some of their games if they play some of yours.
* Find out where people buy their games & books in your area. Visit the game stores on Saturday & Sunday. Talk to people. Post a bulletin in the store or leave some fliers around about Pathfinder. Run a "Gameday" event in a few weeks at the same store. Everyone loves to play but someone has to be the GM to get things started.
* Search Yahoo! Groups for other gamers in your community. Establish a group if you don't find one that already exists. Search for a D&D MeetUp group in your area also. Just don't make direct eye contact with any of them or they'll start telling you about their character.

Josh / Doug,

Thanks, we are in Las Vegas. Our local gaming scene has a website of our own.
The one LGS in Vegas is pushing more wargames [40k,etc.] and 4th ed. There hasn't been much interest in Pathfinder as of yet, I would like to change that. Every time I volunteer to run a game at our monthly Game Days, it is fills quickly. But if I can't run the game for whatever reason, no one else volunteers to run one. Meetup.com for Vegas Gamers does have some Pathfinder AP or homebrew games going, but not PFS games.

Just looking for some suggestions that have worked for others.

Jon,

I haven't done this, but what about running a PFS Game / GM Workshop? You could put it forth it as not only the chance to play the scenario, but also include a short handout with tips on how to run it. If you advertised it as "Getting GMs ready to run the scenario for other players" and ran it as such, maybe you could get at least a couple of them to then run it for other people. If you do that a few times, maybe it'll catch on.

I know Doug from VegasGamers.org.

Thank you Rich.

I've had decent luck with the D&D Meetup in NYC. Granted, it's the largest D&D meetup in the world, so there's no shortage of players, but the Vegas one might be somewhere to start. I just post that I'm going to run the table with a little info (originally just saying that it was a 3.5 game and to email me for "houserule" details when I admitted it was org play and sent them to get the Guide. I've found that there are a lot of people who show up to these events who didn't reserve a spot at a table ahead of time, and show up between 15-30 minutes late. If there's no 4 hr. limit on the space or meetup, you might try to wrangle a bunch of stragglers to play, especially if you have pregens ahead of time. Hopefully the adventure would be enough to hook them to come back or make their own PC for next time. Best of luck.

Liberty's Edge

I'm trying to get Mepacon, in May, to run Pathfinder scenarios. Anyone here associated with Mepacon or planning on attending?

Jon,

I wish I could help you, but my wife would frown of my driving down from Utah just to play Pathfinder. I have had the same problem getting PFS going in my area, manly because our local group doesn't like the point buy system, our FLGS closed two years ago, and the group I play with is comprised of everyone who showed up for RPGA so it's not very likely that anyone else would turn out anyway.

You should drive down anyways, I have a very comfortable couch you can sleep on.

Most of the former LG players here are continuing with LG under the fan supported Greyhawk Reborn or switched to the new RPGA campaign.

Heh, of which (Greyhawk Reborn) I haven't heard anything. Their Yahoo group dissolved and they don't care to communicate with the rest of the world.

May they rot in peace.

If you lived in Salt Lake I might take you up on the offer. I have to drive up there every Saturday for the next six weeks for classes. It's just about as far from me as Vegas is. And if I went to Vegas I could sleep on my brother and sister-in-law's couch.
