To Be or Not To Be

Skull & Shackles

Grand Lodge

Okay.

I really don't want to get Skull and Shackles. I don't like pirates. I don't like gaming on the open seas. I don't like any of the six plot outlines for the various volumes.

But I kinda want to keep up my Charter subscription and am really anticipating Shattered Star. And I love Ricard Pett (Vol 1 author) and Greg Vaughan (Vol 2 author) and -- despite the trash that is The Ruby Phoenix Module that came out a month ago, love Tim Hitchcock (Vol 5 author).

More importantly, I really enjoy Robin Laws' fiction.

But I don't want an article on Besmara or Torag, Vols 1 & 2 respectively. Nor an article later on on how to play huge naval battles in Pathfinder.

But I do sorta want the article (in Vol 2) on what's under the seas in Golarion. It sounds like it could be really good.

So, "To be" or not "To be" -- do I cancel my charter subscription 'till Shattered Star or not?

No.

I buy all Richard Pett adventures anyway, whether I'm going to buy the whole AP or not.

Grand Lodge

Ayup.

You and I have traded posts on this before, Gorbacz.

I'm pretty sure I'll cancel it within the next few days.

I wish I could find a way to get Robin Laws' novella that he's writing for the AP. I really do want it.

@ Heath, I was thinking about getting Vol 1 anyway, cuz it's Pett.

And I like Vaughan lots & lots, too (and the article on "under the seas stuff.")

But do I really want to quit after 2 volumes?

Eventually the fiction is released in an epub format. Not sure how long after the AP finishes that is though.

I'd like to do this one, but I'm not sure how the funds are going to be.

I don't like water based fights myself, but this one does sound cool. Get the first book, and if you think it might be an exception keep the subscription, if not then do what you have to do.

Even if I don't plan on running an AP in full, stealing great encounters is always possible. Who knows perhaps you might be surprised. I say buy book 1 and two and if there's nothing of value in there stop. But if you could steal encounters go ahead.

What's this - talk of mutiny? Time for a taste of the cat.

Wormwood Mutiny is one of the most challenging and unusual adventures I've ever written for Paizo, and indicative of a real trend in this AP to go with something different without loosing the essential spirit of a Paizo AP. It feels to me a little like Kingmaker at sea, and for a group of players like mine that freeform AP is ideal.

I can remember writing an adventure called the Sea Wyvern's Wake and scratching my head for a long time trying to bring elements into an adventure that is essentially a long journey. At that time I didn't like seaborn adventures myself. When I thought about it however I had the chance to draw characters into close proximity to the PCs that they wouldn't necessarily like, but unlike normal adventures the NPCs are part of the furniture. Claustrophobia can be a wonderful tool in role playing. Wormwood is a little like that and for groups who love ropleplaying it will I hope provide a very memorable experience. Of course it's pirating so there's plenty of fighting too, not to mention the kraken. Curses, you tricked it out of me.

After that it's straight into Vaughn's little travesty which as usual will be annoyingly good, in fact I've already seen it as he always sends me his adventures to gloat, curse him the bilge rat. This AP is the one I'm thinking of taking through with my players next as I know they'll love being able to badly overact, has plenty of combat and a strong theme binding the whole AP tightly together. Having said that with the quality of art, fiction and support articles in each edition these days is incredible. I know money is tight but as fans you and I know Paizo always aim for top quality in everything they do and it looks like even though the AP isn't your cup of tea it has plenty in it that could be.

Dudemeister makes a very interesting point that whatever the setting there is always something to be taken away andf I think you may be surprised by the AP. It also of course gives you an option to dip into little sections of it and bind it into your own AP if you wish.

Thanks for the ongoing support of my stuff everyone, it goes both ways as every time I get useful feedback it gets noted and acted on so that the next thing is better than the last.

I hope you'll all get those eyepatches out, unsheath your cutlasses and begin practicing the longest ahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaars! your breath can manage.

Heck, I've been wearing my eyepatch in eager anticipation of this AP since September or so. Hurry up, this bloody thing itches!

Ray - The answer is simple: when you get the chronicles read and enjoy them as usual and then give the ones you don't need to a friend or sell them to a fan! Everybody wins! Heck, I'd buy the Richard Pett one from you myself. Don't cancel your subscription. Spread the joy.

Greetings, fellow travellers.

I feel exactly the same, W E Ray. On top, I know, I will never GM this, looking at the slow progress mine usually does in an AP.

And I follow your thinking concerning the authors contributing to this AP.

What keeps me from cancelling is the anniversary edition of RotRL - because I really want to get the pdf-version for free and it was somewhere stated you needed an active AP subscription if you were eligible for them. Since the hardcover will most likely be published by June/July this year, I will endure the pirate-thingy and - as Dudemaster wrote - cherry-pick the little bits which are to my liking.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaruyan.

You forgot one very important thing mate; I'm Captain Jack Sparrow

Don't like Pirates? Heretics!

  • I want look out a spyglass, roll perception and yell THAR She BE! Two Points off the Starboard Bow~!!;
  • I want to yell BEAT TO QUARTERS and have the crew run around at my command getting ready for battle;
  • I want to make 'em walk the plank;
  • I want to lower a pistol at the forehead of the enemy after battle ends and shout "Guilty" as I pull the trigger in a mockery of justice;
  • I want to swing across a rope and board the enemy in a pitching sea;
  • I want to yell FIRE AS SHE BEARS! and have the cannons shatter the stern of the enemy and go bowling for sailors in a mad mass of screams, smoke, splinters and FEAR;
  • I want to find a piece to a treasure map and fight somebody slimy and **eviler than I am** for the other part -- and I want to WIN with sheer cunning;
  • I want to say things like "why is the rum always gone" every few hours during the game and MEAN IT;
  • I want to draw a rapier and feint, parry, riposte as I move back and forth on the poop deck and then grab a rope, shoot something and vanish into the rigging above;
  • I want to jump off a spar and break my fall to the deck below with a knife in the sail;
  • I want to yell "Yaaaaaarrrrrr" at the table with five others and have us all try to out-pirate the other when the GM says "roll initiative"; AND ABOVE ALL
  • I want to be the BAD GUY for a change, damn it!

So drink up me hearties, Yo ho!

(Keep the subscription -- you'll regret dropping it.)

WER: This is like the fourth post I've seen from you on your skepticism/outright disdain for Skull and Shackles, and I'd almost replied to an earlier one because I kind of picked on this sort of contradiction you made, and seem to continue to make with this thread.

They kind of all go like this:

"I really like 50-75% of the authors who are writing the adventures, I'm also really looking forward to the fiction presented in 100% of the AP. I may or may not like other parts. I've been subscribing since day one, but I think I'm gonna cancel because I don't like pirates."

I pretty much despise nautical adventures, but STAP got me interested, and got me to pick up my charter AP sub sight unseen.

Dude, they made adventure on a giant seaweed cool. There's nothing but 6-7 more years' experience in awesome for them to dump into this, and you've already said you're thrilled with at *least* three of the authors.

Giant seaweed, man. Imagine what they're doing with pirates and krakens.

That's quite a harsh assessment. Why do you think the module is "trash"?

Likely it means it's not traditional, western medieval fantasy.

Huh, maybe. I actually like the adventure.

I'm even thinking about postponing the start of my next campaign to slip in something with this adventure and a few of the associated PFS scenarios. I don't really know yet how to do that, maybe not even as a character-continuous campaign. Need to figure out how the metaplot stuff for PFS is arranged.

Sovereign Court

I like having the whole collection. Its amazing to have such rich resources to draw from. I suggested keeping it unless money is an issue.

Grand Lodge

What Gorbacz said: non-traditional, Western-style -- and I was expecting it to be a like-"Challenge of Champions" adventure.

Knowing Hitchcock's work and Paizo's development, it's probably a very strong "Let's-all-be-monks-and-play-in-this-China-like-karate-tournament" adventure. But for my personal taste, not reflecting on any others', it's trash.

So, you didn't even read it? Stay classy.

@Pax,

But between my 40 or so 1E adventures and my 80 or so 2E adventures and my complete collection of Dungeon (save issues 2-5), and all of Paizo's stuff post the murder of the magazines and the D&D Name, and with the continuance of my AP subscription when Shattered Star begins, and my Pathfinder Society Scenarios,....

In the last year I've played or ran the A Series, Kingdom of the Ghouls, Carrion Crown, a few Paizo modules, 3 other modified Dungeon adventures, a modified Gereg Vaughan Istiving trilogy (twice), a modified RotRL and a Return to the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth.

I use all that material from 1978 up. I've got enough to play 'till I'm 90 and not run out.

Then cancel your subscription, stop complaining about the APs/trying to persuade Paizo to radically alter their flagship product, and go away?

Read the product description for the RotRL reissue. It states that AP subscribers will get a free PDF. At present that's the only way to get the PDF that has been announced - there's no PDF version on the pricelist.

Quote:

The Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition is not part of any subscription, but Pathfinder Adventure Path subscribers who preorder this book will receive a free PDF edition of this book when the print edition ships. (Note that you will need to have an active AP subscription at the time the Anniversary Edition ships in order to receive the PDF for free.)

Taken from Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition page.

Emphasis mine.

Ruyan.

I'm not a fan of the pirate concept either and I doubt I'll ever actually play or run the S&S AP myself. But I'm keeping my subscription because I'm curious to see what Paizo does with it. I figure at the very least, I could get ideas for my own campaigns and whether it's a game I'm interested in playing or not, it's still bound to be a good read.

Besides, I'm dying to see what Richard Pett does to first level characters.

Ray-

My advice, is keep the subscription active and gift the AP to someone who would really love it! That's what I've done with Jade Regent.

Someday, they might introduce rewards based on subscription tenure.
You don't want to miss out on the possibility of a chance, do you?!

I had the same dilemma you're facing with Jade Regent. ZERO interest in asian-themed RPGs. And I had really liked Carrion Crown. I cancelled. $20 each for 6 modules is a lot of money for something I didn't want.

And the upcoming promise of a pirate AP didn't do much for me. Freeport products are great and the AP has an uphill path to surpass that setting.

The money has found many other uses with no regrets on my part. Subscribing isn't that big a deal.

Grand Lodge

@ Holmes-&-Watson,

I was actually with you on that, my personal disinterest for Oriental Adventures is greater than my disinterest for pirates. It just so happened that vol 1 is in Brinewall Keep -- a location I'd been salivating over since AP#3's primer on Varisia. Probably my favorite place-name in all of Golarion. And vol 2 is in Viking World, Ah Hell YEAH! And vol 3 is the north pole, something I'm happy to have in my collection. I went ahead and kept it for vol 4, too, for Mongolia and despite really, REALLY not wanting vols 5 & 6, well, I was gonna cancel those two but I really like the Dave Gross novella inside -- a nice murder mystery (awaiting vol 6 which should arrive next week).

So, predisposition aside, what did you think of the adventure in 5 or 6?
